For a used-sedan budget capped at $15,000, Edmunds recommends the Honda Civic, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Malibu, with specific model years to target. Five more sedans—Mitsubishi Mirage G4, Kia Rio, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima—show promising reliability data, but their current prices depend on local listings and the individual car.
For perspective, the U.S. average new-vehicle transaction price was $50,089 in August 2026, according to Cox Automotive. That figure covers the broader mix of new vehicles, not sedans alone, and excludes incentives, trade-ins, taxes, fees and finance and insurance products. It is a market benchmark—not a promise that any used sedan below it is a good buy.
Five used sedans recommended under $15,000
Edmunds’ recommendations, reported by the Associated Press, identify model years that fit a $15,000 used-car budget based on national retailer inventory at the time of publication. Local prices can differ, so check listings in your area and compare similar cars by year, trim, mileage, title and condition. Edmunds selected models for competitive scores, broad availability and a RepairPal reliability score of at least 4 out of 5.
| Model | Years to target | Why consider it | Tradeoff to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Civic | 2016 | Roomy back seat, fuel economy, acceleration and a balanced ride and handling. The 2016 redesign brought new styling and a roomier interior. | Compare trim and equipment; features vary by vehicle. |
| Kia Forte | 2019–2021 | Quiet interior, good fuel economy, available features and a large trunk. The EX trim adds comfort features. | The ride can feel firm over bumps. |
| Mazda3 | 2014–2018; consider a 2018 Touring | Responsive handling, quality interior and strong crash-test performance. Consumer Reports includes 2016–2018 models in its $10,000–$15,000 group and measured 33 mpg overall in its tests. | Prioritize a test drive if ride comfort matters more than sporty handling. |
| Toyota Corolla | 2015–2017 | Comfort and driver-assistance features; the 2017 model received revised front styling, LED headlights and interior updates. | Less spacious than some rivals, with modest acceleration. |
| Chevrolet Malibu | 2016 or newer; also consider 2019 | A roomier midsize alternative. The 2019 model brought revised styling and updated infotainment. | Check the exact car’s trim, equipment and service records rather than assuming all examples are alike. |

Five more reliability candidates to check against local prices
CARFAX’s August 2026 ranking analyzed billions of U.S. maintenance records to estimate unexpected-repair likelihood over five years for 2019–2023 model-year vehicles. The listed segment average was 5.5%. These model-level percentages are not a prediction for a particular car, nor do they establish that a model currently sells below $15,000.
| Model | CARFAX repair likelihood | Price and model-year context |
|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Mirage G4 | 1.9% average for 2019–2023 models | Sold as a sedan from 2017 through 2024. Check local listings; the ranking does not verify current asking prices. |
| Kia Rio | 2.0% average for 2019–2023 models | Production ended after 2023. CARFAX says the 2012 and 2018 redesigns improved reliability. Verify price and condition locally. |
| Toyota Camry | 2.2% average for 2019–2023 models | Consumer Reports recommends the 2015–2016 Camry Hybrid in its $10,000–$15,000 band; its tests measured 38 mpg overall. That test result applies to its test vehicle. |
| Honda Accord | 2.8% average for 2019–2023 models | Consumer Reports lists the 2016 Accord in its $10,000–$15,000 recommendations; its four-cylinder test car returned 30 mpg overall. |
| Nissan Altima | 3.9% average for 2019–2023 models | Below CARFAX’s 5.5% segment average; CARFAX identifies fifth-generation 2013–2018 models as strongest in its data. Check current local listings. |
CARFAX also reports that 67.2% of Toyota Camrys and 67.5% of Honda Accords from their respective model lines have remained on the road since 2006. Those figures describe model-line longevity, not the condition or expected lifespan of an individual vehicle. See the CARFAX reliability ranking and Consumer Reports guide for their respective methods and recommendations.

How to choose between the sedans
Start with how you use the car, then compare actual vehicles in your budget. Reliability rankings and fuel-economy results from different organizations are not interchangeable: they measure different things and may cover different years.
- Need more passenger or cargo room? Compare the midsize Malibu, Camry and Accord with compact choices such as the Civic, Forte, Mazda3, Corolla, Mirage G4, Rio and Altima. Check the actual cabin and trunk; model category alone does not determine whether it fits your needs.
- Care most about ride or handling? Test-drive the Forte if you are sensitive to a firm ride, and compare the Mazda3’s responsive handling with the Corolla’s more modest acceleration.
- Want better fuel economy? Treat published figures as reference points, not guarantees. Consumer Reports’ overall-mpg results cited here apply to its tested Mazda3, Camry Hybrid and four-cylinder Accord, not every engine, trim or driving pattern.
- Need a particular safety feature? Confirm it is fitted to the exact trim and vehicle. Equipment can vary even within the same model year.
- Comparing asking prices? Match year, trim, mileage, title status and condition. A low price does not offset a problematic history or needed repairs.
What to check before buying a used sedan
Reliability ratings describe groups of vehicles, not the maintenance history or present condition of the car you are considering. Consumer Reports warns that even a recommended used car can be a poor individual example because of manufacturing variation or neglected maintenance. Its guide says the listed vehicles performed well in its tests when new, had above-average reliability for the years shown, and came with electronic stability control as standard; verify equipment on the specific car.

- Review the title and vehicle history. Check for title branding, accident history, ownership and service records. A report can help organize information, but it does not replace an inspection or guarantee that every issue is recorded.
- Check for open recalls. Use the vehicle’s identification number and confirm that any applicable recall repairs have been completed.
- Inspect and test-drive the car. Look for signs of damage, leaks, uneven tire wear, warning lights and unusual noises. Test the brakes, steering, climate controls and the features you expect to use.
- Arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection before signing. Ask the mechanic to assess condition and likely near-term repairs. Consumer Reports recommends a thorough inspection by a certified mechanic because a model recommendation cannot rule out a neglected or defective individual vehicle.
- Compare the total deal, not just the listing price. Account for inspection findings, required repairs, registration and any other costs relevant to your purchase.
