Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why choose the Yamaha FJR1300 for touring? Its large inline-four engine, highway-oriented gearing, touring controls, adjustable wind management, shaft drive and hard luggage make it a compelling sport-tourer on paper. The details depend on year and market: the US 2024 FJR1300ES and European 2020 FJR1300AS Ultimate Edition differ in equipment and specifications, so check the exact version rather than assuming every FJR has every feature.
1. A 1,298cc inline-four for long-distance riding
Yamaha specifies a 1,298cc liquid-cooled inline-four in both the US 2024 FJR1300ES and European 2020 FJR1300AS Ultimate Edition. For the European 2020 AS, Yamaha lists output of 107.5kW (146.2PS) at 8,000rpm and 138.0Nm at 7,000rpm. Those figures describe that specific European model, not every FJR1300. Yamaha’s 2024 US feature page and Yamaha Europe’s 2020 AS factsheet document the respective models.
2. Six-speed gearing with a highway-focused sixth gear
The US 2024 ES has a six-speed transmission, and Yamaha describes sixth gear as tall for relaxed highway riding. That is a useful touring-oriented design detail, though it does not establish a particular cruising speed, engine rpm or fuel economy in real-world conditions.
3. Cruise control and rider aids for changing conditions
On the US 2024 ES, Yamaha lists cruise control, traction control and two D-Mode throttle-response settings. These features give the rider options for throttle response and assistance; they do not remove the need to adjust speed and riding style to traffic, weather or road conditions. Yamaha’s feature list is specific to the 2024 US ES.

4. Shaft drive instead of a chain
Yamaha equips the 2024 US ES with shaft drive and describes it as requiring minimal maintenance. Riders who would rather not perform routine chain cleaning, lubrication and adjustment may find that appealing. Yamaha’s description is not a quantified ownership-cost comparison, and it should not be read as meaning the final drive needs no care.
5. Adjustable wind management
The 2024 US ES has an electronically adjustable windscreen and adjustable fairing side panels. Yamaha’s European 2020 AS factsheet also describes an adjustable screen and an air-management system. These provisions let riders alter airflow, but the effect depends on rider height, position and conditions; the feature list cannot guarantee a particular level of wind protection.

6. Adjustability to help tailor the riding position
Yamaha lists seat and handlebar adjustability for the 2024 US ES. The 2020 European AS factsheet also describes adjustment to seat and handlebar position. This gives owners some scope to tune the fit, but adjustment ranges do not prove that a motorcycle will suit every body type. Sit on the specific bike and assess reach to the bars, foot placement and visibility before buying.
7. Electronic suspension settings for road and load
The US 2024 ES features electronic suspension with preload and damping settings. Yamaha’s 2020 European AS materials likewise describe electronically adjustable suspension. The ability to change settings is relevant when road surfaces or luggage loads vary, but the two model years and variants should not be assumed to share identical suspension hardware or controls.

8. Hard luggage for touring practicality
Yamaha lists integrated hard side cases on the US 2024 ES. Separately, Yamaha Europe’s 2020 AS accessory factsheet documents 30-litre touring side cases for a particular accessory configuration. That capacity belongs to the cited accessory setup, not a universal claim about every FJR case. Before purchasing cases for another year or market, confirm exact fitment and mounting requirements against the motorcycle and the accessory listing.
9. Cornering lights and linked braking equipment
For the 2024 US ES, Yamaha lists lean-angle-sensitive LED cornering lights and ABS with Unified Braking System. These are useful pieces of equipment to consider on a touring motorcycle, but lighting and braking aids cannot eliminate risk or substitute for appropriate speed, visibility and braking technique.

10. Heated grips and power for accessories
The US 2024 ES has heated grips with four settings, plus a fairing glove box with a 12V outlet. Yamaha also lists 12V accessory power. These features can make cold-weather riding and powering compatible devices more convenient; check the motorcycle’s manual for outlet limits and accessory requirements. The cited equipment is for the US 2024 ES, not a promise of identical fitment on every FJR1300.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know which FJR1300 you are considering
The FJR1300 family spans model years, markets and variants. The most important distinction in the cited material is shifting: Yamaha describes YCC-S clutchless shifting on the European 2020 AS, while the US 2024 ES materials describe an Assist and Slipper clutch. The versions also have different published dimensions and fuel capacities.

The figures are published for different markets and versions, so they are not a direct like-for-like comparison. The US figures are in Yamaha’s 2024 ES specifications; the European figures are in the 2020 AS Ultimate Edition factsheet.
What to check before buying
- Test the weight at low speed. Yamaha lists the US 2024 ES at 642lb wet, or 644lb for the California model; the European 2020 AS is listed at 296kg wet. Try maneuvering the actual motorcycle, including with luggage or a passenger if that reflects your use.
- Check fit in person. Published seat heights differ by version, and numbers alone cannot tell you whether you can comfortably reach the ground or operate the controls.
- Verify equipment by year and market. Confirm the exact variant’s clutch and shifting system, suspension, rider aids, luggage and electrical outlets rather than transferring specifications from another FJR.
- Confirm luggage compatibility. Case capacity and fitment depend on the case and motorcycle configuration. The European 2020 AS accessory factsheet documents a 30L touring-case setup; check the year and mounting requirements for any bike you are considering.
- Treat fuel figures as version-specific. Yamaha’s US 2024 ES page calls 36mpg an estimate. Consumption and practical range vary with conditions and use, so do not treat that figure as a promise.
A brief history of the touring idea
Yamaha dates the FJR1300’s launch to 2001 and says the AS variant introduced YCC-S in 2006. The company describes the original model as having the potential for a “two-up, 10-day, 3,000 km tour”; that is Yamaha’s characterization of the model’s touring potential, not an independently measured capability. The Yamaha historical page identifies the figures on that page as relating to the original release model.
