10 Reasons to Choose the New Ducati Panigale V2 Over the Yamaha R9

The Panigale V2’s V2 engine, published weight figures, road-oriented design claims, and Öhlins-equipped S trim give some riders clear reasons to choose Ducati. The R9 answers with adjustable KYB suspension, Stylema brakes, cruise control, and broad rider aids.

The new Ducati Panigale V2 may be the better fit if you want a 90-degree V-twin, a lighter published wet-weight figure, a less front-loaded riding position, and the option of an Öhlins-equipped S trim. Those are specific reasons to prefer it—not proof it beats the Yamaha YZF-R9 in every road or track comparison. Both are 890 cc sportbikes, and the R9 counters with fully adjustable suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes, cruise control, and a broad suite of rider aids.

Panigale V2 vs Yamaha R9: the key specifications

The figures below come from manufacturer material for the US market. They are specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test. The Yamaha figures are for the 2025 YZF-R9; Ducati’s current US page lists the Panigale V2 and V2 S.

Specification Ducati Panigale V2 Yamaha YZF-R9
Engine 890 cc, 90-degree V2; 120 hp at 10,750 rpm and 69 lb-ft at 8,250 rpm, per Ducati’s current US specifications 890 cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three; rated horsepower and torque are not stated on Yamaha’s cited US specifications page
Published wet weight 395 lb for the standard V2 and 388 lb for the V2 S, both wet without fuel, per Ducati’s current US specifications 430 lb wet, including standard equipment, fluids, and a full tank, per Yamaha’s 2025 US specifications
Seat height 33 in, per Ducati’s current US specifications 32.7 in, per Yamaha’s 2025 US specifications
Suspension Marzocchi fork and Kayaba shock on the standard model; Öhlins fork and shock on the S, per Ducati Fully adjustable KYB suspension, per Yamaha’s 2025 US specifications and feature page
Front brakes Brembo M50 calipers and 320 mm discs, per Ducati Brembo Stylema calipers and dual 320 mm front discs, per Yamaha
Current US price shown $16,995 for the standard red version; $19,995 or $20,495 for the S depending on color, on Ducati’s current US page Current MSRP not stated on Yamaha’s cited 2025 US specifications page

Weight comparisons need care: Ducati’s figures exclude fuel, while Yamaha’s include a full tank and other fluids. The published numbers suggest why a weight-conscious buyer might look closely at the Ducati, but they do not establish a precise like-for-like advantage. Likewise, displacement alone says little about how the engines deliver power; Yamaha’s cited US specification page does not provide output figures to compare with Ducati’s rating. See Ducati’s Panigale V2 specifications and Yamaha’s 2025 YZF-R9 specifications.

10 reasons you might prefer the Panigale V2

1. You specifically want a 90-degree V2

Ducati gives the Panigale a 90-degree V2; Yamaha uses an inline-three. That is a meaningful distinction for a buyer choosing an engine layout and its character, rather than a claim that one configuration is universally better. Ducati lists the V2 at 120 hp and 69 lb-ft. Yamaha’s cited US specification page does not publish corresponding horsepower or torque figures, so those Ducati numbers do not prove a power advantage.

2. Ducati publishes a useful, clearly defined output figure

If you want a stated factory rating to consider, Ducati specifies 120 hp at 10,750 rpm and 69 lb-ft at 8,250 rpm. The Yamaha page cited here does not give an equivalent rating. This is an information advantage in the comparison, not a direct performance verdict.

3. Its listed weight may appeal if you prioritize low mass

Ducati lists the standard V2 at 395 lb wet without fuel and the S at 388 lb wet without fuel. Yamaha lists the R9 at 430 lb with a full tank, fluids, and standard equipment. Because the measurement bases differ, those figures cannot support an exact apples-to-apples weight gap; check each bike’s actual condition and equipment when comparing in person.

4. The S trim brings Öhlins suspension from the factory

The standard Panigale V2 uses a Marzocchi fork and Kayaba shock, while the V2 S gets an Öhlins fork and shock. That gives Ducati buyers a clear factory step-up if premium suspension hardware is a priority. Yamaha’s R9 specification lists fully adjustable KYB suspension, a substantial feature in its own right; the distinction is the available Öhlins-equipped Ducati trim, not a claim that the Yamaha suspension is inadequate.

5. Ducati describes a less front-loaded riding position

Ducati says the new Panigale’s position is less front-loaded than its predecessor and emphasizes comfort and front-end feel. The R9 is described by Yamaha as having a dedicated Supersport position, short clip-on reach, and ample leg room. Seat heights are close—33 in for the Ducati and 32.7 in for the Yamaha—but neither a measurement nor a manufacturer description can establish which cockpit will suit your body. Sit on or ride both before deciding. Yamaha’s R9 feature page describes its riding position.

6. Its bodywork is designed with heat management in mind

Ducati identifies passive ventilation ducts intended to reduce heat during riding. That makes thermal comfort a reasonable reason to investigate the Panigale, especially if you expect to ride in traffic, but the claimed design aim is not a measured comparison with the R9. Comfort will depend on conditions and the individual rider.

7. Its standard controls include a quickshifter and adjustable rider aids

Ducati lists four riding modes and standard cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, engine-brake control, and Quick Shift 2.0. The 5-inch display lets riders adjust the relevant electronic settings while riding, according to Ducati. Yamaha also equips the R9 with extensive electronics: its feature page lists a six-axis IMU, selectable traction, slide, lift, and brake controls, engine-brake management, launch control, a quickshifter, and four power-delivery modes. Pick the Ducati if its interface and standard setup appeal to you—not because it is the only electronically sophisticated bike here.

8. Ducati’s brake hardware is a distinct alternative, not a proven upgrade

The Panigale has Brembo M50 calipers and 320 mm front discs. Yamaha specifies Brembo Stylema calipers and dual 320 mm front discs. Both have high-specification hardware; the available specifications do not establish which bike stops faster or feels better at the lever.

9. The Ducati comes with a specific tire setup you may prefer

Ducati lists Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires, sized 120/70 at the front and 190/55 at the rear, and says track riders can mount a 190/60 rear slick. Yamaha lists Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tires in 120/70 front and 180/55 rear sizes. Those are factory fitments, not a universal replacement recommendation: confirm the exact model-year fitment and permitted tire sizes before changing tires.

10. You may value Ducati’s current trim and equipment choices

Ducati’s current US page offers the standard Panigale V2 and the Öhlins-equipped S, with the displayed S price varying by color. Ducati’s announcement also identifies Ducati Power Launch and Pit Limiter as standard on the S. If that factory configuration is what you want, it is a concrete reason to consider the trim. The cited Yamaha specification page does not establish a current R9 MSRP, so it cannot settle which bike costs less or offers better value.

Where the Yamaha R9 makes a strong case

Choosing the Ducati does not mean dismissing the R9. Yamaha’s published equipment gives it several strong points of its own:

  • A fully adjustable KYB suspension setup.
  • Brembo Stylema calipers and dual 320 mm front discs.
  • A six-axis IMU-based rider-aid suite, including selectable traction, slide, lift, and brake controls, plus engine-brake management and launch control.
  • Cruise control, smartphone connectivity, and a five-inch TFT display.
  • An 890 cc inline-three that Yamaha describes as tuned for broad, accessible street power delivery.

Those features may matter more to a buyer who values cruise control, Yamaha’s specific electronics package, or the inline-three layout. Yamaha’s description of power delivery is a manufacturer claim, just as Ducati’s claims about manageability, comfort, and heat management are not independent comparative findings.

Is the Panigale V2 worth more than the R9?

There is not enough established current US pricing here to answer that with a direct price comparison. Ducati’s current product page lists $16,995 for the standard red Panigale V2 and $19,995 or $20,495 for the S depending on the listed color. Yamaha’s cited 2025 US specifications page does not state a current R9 MSRP. Check current manufacturer pricing and dealer availability for your location and model year before comparing out-the-door costs. Ducati’s original launch announcement contains launch-era pricing, which should not be substituted for the current figures on its product page. Ducati’s announcement also describes the S equipment.

Which bike is better for street riding?

The Panigale V2 is an appealing choice if the V2 layout, Ducati’s stated less front-loaded position, ventilation design, and optional Öhlins S trim match your priorities. The R9 is compelling if you prefer its inline-three, want cruise control, or place particular weight on its IMU-based controls and fully adjustable KYB suspension. Published specifications cannot determine which is more comfortable for you or establish a road-performance winner; your fit and preferences matter.

What the published specifications cannot tell you

The available manufacturer material establishes listed equipment, dimensions, and manufacturer-rated figures, but it does not establish comparative lap times, braking distances, or independent rider impressions. Nor does the Yamaha page cited here supply output numbers for a direct power-rating comparison. Treat this as a buyer’s comparison of stated specs and features, then confirm model year, trim, local-market equipment, dealer availability, and fitment with the manufacturers or a dealer.
