The Yamaha YZF-R9 has a stronger case than the YZF-R6 for riders who want Yamaha’s current, road-oriented Supersport package: more peak torque at a lower rpm in Yamaha’s European specifications, modern rider aids, and equipment designed for both street and track use. That does not make it universally faster or better on a circuit. The R6’s high-revving 599cc inline-four and racing history remain compelling, and the R9’s advantages matter most if they match how you ride.
The comparison below uses Yamaha’s European specifications for the R9 and R6 RACE where figures are compared, plus Yamaha’s US announcement for R9 equipment and positioning. Availability and road legality depend on the specific version and country.
Ten reasons the R9 may suit more riders
1. It makes more peak torque at a lower rpm
Yamaha Motor Europe lists the R9 at 93 Nm of peak torque at 7,000 rpm, compared with 61.7 Nm at 10,500 rpm for its R6 RACE. Those figures support the R9’s more torque-focused character on paper, but peak numbers alone do not describe the full torque curve or prove an acceleration or lap-time advantage. Yamaha R9 European specifications; Yamaha R6 RACE European specifications.
2. Its three-cylinder engine offers a different balance
The R9 uses a liquid-cooled 890cc three-cylinder engine; the European R6 RACE is a 599cc liquid-cooled inline four. Displacement and cylinder layout help explain why the bikes deliver power differently, but neither configuration is inherently the better choice for every rider. The R6’s appeal includes its high-revving four-cylinder character.

3. Its published peak power is close, but arrives earlier
Yamaha Motor Europe gives the R9 peak power of 87.5 kW (119 PS) at 10,000 rpm and the R6 RACE 87.1 kW (118.4 PS) at 14,500 rpm. These are near-equal published metric peak figures, with different stated engine speeds. They are not a direct measure of real-world pace, and the figures are specific to Yamaha’s European specifications.
4. Yamaha designed it around street as well as track use
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, described the R9 as combining “track-capable performance with street bike accessibility,” citing broad, smooth power delivery, street-friendly ergonomics and rider aids. That is the manufacturer’s design aim, not an independently established comfort or handling comparison with the R6. Yamaha’s October 9, 2024 R9 announcement.

5. It is Yamaha’s current road-oriented Supersport proposition
The R9 announcement frames the bike as a performance street motorcycle that can also be used on a circuit. That makes it a more natural fit for a buyer seeking one Supersport for road riding and occasional track days than Yamaha’s European R6 RACE, which Yamaha identifies as track-only. This distinction applies to those named offerings; it does not establish the status of every R6 version in every country.
6. Its rider-aid package is extensive
Yamaha’s US launch announcement lists an IMU-based suite with traction, slide, lift and brake control, as well as launch control and adjustable power modes. Riders who value electronic support and settings to tailor response have concrete reasons to consider the R9. This comparison does not establish that every R6 model year or regional version lacks comparable features.

7. Fully adjustable KYB suspension adds setup flexibility
The R9 launch specification includes fully adjustable KYB suspension. Adjustability gives owners and technicians options to tune the suspension for rider, road or track conditions; it does not by itself prove superior handling or comfort over an R6. Yamaha’s R9 announcement is the source for the listed equipment. Yamaha’s R9 launch details.
8. Brembo Stylema front calipers are part of the package
Yamaha lists Brembo Stylema front calipers and a radial master cylinder on the R9. They are notable hardware for a rider weighing braking equipment, though component names alone cannot establish shorter stopping distances or better feel than another motorcycle.

9. Rear ABS can be switched off for track use
The R9 includes a rear-ABS-off function, which can be useful to riders who want that option on track. It is a setup feature, not a recommendation to disable ABS on public roads; follow the owner’s manual and local rules.
10. The cockpit and aerodynamic details are more contemporary
Yamaha lists a five-inch TFT display with phone connectivity among the R9’s features, along with winglets in its launch materials. The screen and connectivity give the R9 a current instrument-and-phone feature set, while Yamaha presents the winglets as part of its aerodynamic design. The manufacturer’s description is not independent evidence of a particular aerodynamic or lap-time gain.

Where the R6 still makes sense
The R6 is not simply an inferior R9. Its 599cc inline-four, with Yamaha Europe’s published peak power at 14,500 rpm, suits riders who specifically want a high-revving engine character. It also has a substantial WorldSSP record: Yamaha reports 147 wins, 404 podiums and 10 world titles for the R6 campaign from 1999 through 2024. Yamaha says the R9 won the 2025 WorldSSP title in its debut season. These are manufacturer-reported racing results, useful context but not proof that either road bike is faster or better for an individual rider. Check which R6 version is sold where you ride
“R6” can mean different versions and market situations. Yamaha identifies the European R6 RACE as track-only. Separately, Yamaha’s notice for the 2025 R6 Race Base model in Japan says it lacks certification from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, cannot obtain a license plate and cannot be ridden on public roads there. That Japan-specific notice should not be applied to every R6 in every country. Confirm the exact model, registration status and local availability before buying. Quick Recap
How to choose between them
- Consider the R9 if you want the road-and-track intent Yamaha describes, value its earlier and higher published peak torque, or prioritize its listed rider aids and equipment.
- Consider an R6 if the high-revving inline-four is the point, you want an R6-specific track machine, or its character and racing heritage matter more than the R9’s newer package.
- Before deciding, compare the exact model year and country-specific version, verify road registration status, and arrange a ride or track session where available. Published specifications do not substitute for your own fit and intended-use assessment.
