10 Reasons the Tesla Model S Still Matters to the Electric Sedan Segment

The Tesla Model S helped establish a premium electric-sedan template. Its range, acceleration, charging and software still matter, though production has ended and rivals have raised the bar.

The Tesla Model S helped set the modern premium electric-sedan template, but “still dictates” overstates what the available evidence shows. Tesla says the Model S is no longer in production, and newer rivals have moved ahead in some areas. Its influence is best understood through the combination of range, acceleration, charging, packaging and software that made it a reference point—and through the ways today’s alternatives have changed the benchmark.

Why does the Tesla Model S still matter?

The Model S brought long range, high performance and technology-led controls together in a familiar four-door sedan. Tesla’s 2015 Form 10-K described it as a five-passenger, fully electric sedan, with up to 288 miles of EPA range at the time. That filing also described a performance version able to reach 60 mph in 2.8 seconds with the Ludicrous upgrade. These are historical figures, not current specifications.

1. It made range a headline feature

Range was central to the Model S proposition early on, and it remains a point of comparison. Tesla’s current U.S. page lists an EPA-estimated 410 miles for Model S and 368 miles for Model S Plaid. Those manufacturer estimates apply to the listed configurations; they are not guarantees of a driver’s real-world range. Tesla notes that range can vary with factors including vehicle configuration, speed, weather and elevation.

2. It paired electric power with dramatic acceleration

The Model S challenged the expectation that a luxury electric car had to prioritize efficiency over speed. Tesla currently lists 670 hp and a 3.1-second 0–60 mph time for Model S, and 1,020 hp and 1.99 seconds for Plaid. Those are manufacturer specifications for distinct versions, not results from an independently matched comparison.

3. It treated charging as part of the car

Long-distance usability depends on more than battery range: drivers also need workable charging stops and route planning. Tesla says its route planner directs Model S drivers to Supercharging stops and lists a maximum Supercharging rate of 250 kW. That is Tesla’s own description, not an independent ranking of charging networks. The company cautions that charging performance varies with conditions such as charger type, battery temperature and state of charge.

4. It used a familiar premium-sedan shape

Rather than ask buyers to adopt an unfamiliar body style, the Model S placed electric performance in a four-door, five-passenger sedan. Tesla’s 2015 filing also emphasized the battery beneath the floor and the car’s storage. That packaging was part of the early product story: an electric powertrain could be presented as a premium-car alternative without giving up the basic sedan format.

5. It made the cabin feel technology-led

The Model S’s large central touchscreen and software-oriented controls became a visible part of its identity. Tesla’s 2015 filing described the touchscreen as a way to control vehicle functions and access information. That approach helped distinguish the car from luxury sedans organized around more conventional controls, though a technology-centered interface is not automatically a better fit for every driver.

6. It framed the car as software that could evolve

Tesla’s 2015 filing described over-the-air software updates as part of the Model S ownership experience. The idea was that a car’s software could change after delivery, rather than being fixed at the point of sale. The filing documents Tesla’s product positioning at that time; it does not establish that every update improved every function or that all later rivals lacked similar capabilities.

Is the Tesla Model S still competitive?

In selected dimensions, yes. Car and Driver’s 2025 review says the Model S continues to deliver strong performance and range, while noting that newer rivals can offer more luxurious interiors. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict on comfort or quality. The current Tesla figures also show that range and acceleration remain central strengths, but they do not settle questions about ride comfort, materials, usability or ownership costs.

How does the Model S compare with the Lucid Air, BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE?

Car and Driver identifies the Lucid Air, BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE as relevant alternatives. Its 2025 Model S review reports up to 512 EPA-estimated miles for the Lucid Air, higher than Tesla’s current listed Model S and Plaid range estimates. These figures are not a controlled, same-condition test of all four cars, and the review’s range context should not be treated as a complete ranking of every model year or trim.

A useful comparison depends on the exact versions being considered. Check the range test cycle and configuration, acceleration and powertrain, charging access and peak rate, cabin comfort and controls, rear-seat and cargo practicality, and whether the vehicle is new or used. The available figures do not provide a full head-to-head scorecard for these cars.

Is the Model S still being made?

No. Tesla’s current U.S. Model S page says the vehicle is no longer in production, though it may show pre-owned non-Signature inventory. The Model S therefore matters primarily as a product that helped establish expectations and as a possible used-car choice—not as evidence that Tesla currently leads new electric-sedan production or sales.

What “still dictates” gets right—and wrong

The phrase captures the Model S’s lasting importance as a reference point for range, acceleration, charging integration, sedan packaging and software-led design. It goes too far if read as a claim of present-day market dominance, sales leadership or proof that specific rivals copied the car. The evidence here supports influence and continued competitiveness in selected areas, not a definitive ranking of the whole segment.
