The 2026 Lexus ES is an eighth-generation redesign, not a lightly refreshed version of the outgoing sedan. For U.S. buyers, the biggest changes are the addition of battery-electric models, a more powerful hybrid with optional all-wheel drive, a longer body, larger displays and new available rear-seat comforts. Whether those changes make it a better car for you depends on which powertrain and equipment you want; the specifications below are Lexus claims, not independent test results.
1. It is an eighth-generation redesign
Lexus unveiled the 2026 ES as an all-new, eighth-generation model in April 2025. The redesign reaches beyond styling: Lexus describes changes to the platform, powertrain lineup, dimensions, cabin technology and available comfort equipment. That makes “massive improvement” a reasonable way to describe the scale of the update, but it is an evaluation—not proof that every aspect is better for every driver.

2. The platform is designed for more than one kind of powertrain
The new ES is built around what Lexus calls a multi-pathway platform, intended to accommodate hybrid and battery-electric configurations. Lexus’ U.S. hybrid announcement describes the underpinnings as an evolution of the previous generation’s TNGA-K platform. The practical result is a broader lineup under one nameplate, rather than a sedan offered only as a hybrid.

3. The ES now has battery-electric versions
U.S. buyers can choose between two battery-electric ES models: the front-wheel-drive ES 350e and all-wheel-drive ES 500e. Lexus lists a 74.7-kWh battery for each. With standard 19-inch wheels, Lexus gives EPA-estimated ranges of 307 miles for the 350e and 276 miles for the 500e; larger wheel options reduce the estimates. These are U.S. EPA figures for the specified configurations, not European WLTP ratings, and actual range can vary with conditions.
That choice adds an all-electric alternative to the ES range, while the different drive layouts and range estimates give buyers a concrete trade-off to weigh. Lexus’ figures do not establish real-world range in a particular climate or driving pattern.

4. The hybrid has more output and an AWD option
Lexus rates the U.S. 2026 ES 350h at 244 hp of total system output in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. In its comparison, Lexus lists 215 hp for the front-wheel-drive-only 2025 ES 300h—a 29-hp increase on the manufacturer’s stated figures. The 2026 hybrid also adds optional AWD, which Lexus describes as a first for the ES hybrid.

AWD gives buyers a drivetrain choice the cited U.S. predecessor did not offer.
5. The hybrid moves to Lexus’ sixth-generation system
The 2026 ES 350h pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Lexus’ sixth-generation hybrid system. For the front-wheel-drive U.S. version, Lexus gives an EPA-estimated 46 mpg combined. That rating applies to the FWD configuration; it should not be treated as the rating for the AWD model or as a guarantee of what a driver will achieve.

6. The longer body is intended to create more cabin space
For the U.S. model, Lexus reports that the 2026 ES is 6.5 inches longer overall and has a wheelbase 3.1 inches longer than its predecessor. Lexus says the added size particularly increases rear-seat space. The European-market figures are different units for that market: Lexus Europe reports 165 mm of additional overall length and an 80 mm longer wheelbase, bringing the wheelbase to 2,950 mm. These market-specific measurements should not be mixed as though they describe separate versions with identical specifications.

7. The cabin gets larger, more contemporary displays
Lexus lists a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver Multi-Information Display for the U.S. 2026 ES lineup. The larger screens are a visible technology change from the outgoing model. Equipment can depend on the exact version, so buyers should check the specification for the trim they are considering rather than assume every detail is identical across the range.
8. Lexus Safety System+ moves to version 4.0
Lexus says all 2026 ES models receive Lexus Safety System+ 4.0. This is an update to the manufacturer’s driver-assistance suite; it should not be read as a promise that the systems will prevent a collision. Their presence also does not remove the driver’s responsibility to stay attentive and in control.

For the U.S. ES 350e Luxury, Lexus lists an optional Executive Package with rear outboard power adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage, plus an ottoman for the front passenger-side rear seat. Lexus’ overview also lists reclining rear seats, a power rear sunshade and multi-zone climate controls among the available rear-seat amenities. These features are package- and configuration-specific, not standard throughout the ES range.

10. The electric models bring charging hardware and faster DC charging
U.S. battery-electric ES models use a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and support DC fast charging at up to 150 kW. Lexus estimates a 10%-to-80% charge in about 28 minutes under ideal conditions; the figure is conditional, not a guaranteed charging-stop duration. Lexus also says a dual-voltage charging cable and CCS-to-NACS adapter are included with the U.S. BEVs.
What the changes mean for buyers
The redesign’s strongest case depends on what you want from a sedan: the electric models create a new powertrain choice, the 350h adds output and optional AWD, and the longer body and optional Executive Package target rear-passenger comfort. The manufacturer’s published ratings and equipment establish what has changed on paper; they do not establish independent real-world performance, a universal improvement in ride or handling, or a reliability gain.
