The 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S can be the perfect urban cruiser for solo riders who want strong acceleration, a low seat, compact dimensions, modern electronics, and distinctive styling. Its compromises—short rear suspension, 3.1-gallon tank, forward controls, solo seat, wide front tire, and recall checks—make it less suitable for rough roads or touring.
The motorcycle is a modern performance cruiser, not a traditional air-cooled Sportster. Harley-Davidson’s liquid-cooled Revolution Max 1250T engine and extensive rider technology make the Sportster S unusually capable in town, while independent testing exposes the ride-quality and practicality compromises that qualify the word “perfect.”

Key takeaways
- The 2024 Sportster S uses a liquid-cooled 1,252-cc Revolution Max 1250T engine producing a claimed 121 horsepower and 93 lb-ft of torque.
- A 59.8-inch wheelbase, 28.9-inch laden seat height, and 502-pound running-order weight give the Sportster S a compact solo-riding footprint, although the wide front tire adds steering effort.
- Sport, Road, and Rain modes, customizable ride settings, cornering ABS, cornering traction control, cruise control, TPMS, Bluetooth, and H-D-app navigation make the Sportster S unusually electronic for a cruiser.
- The 3.1-gallon tank and Harley-Davidson’s 49-mpg estimated city/highway figure favor commuting and short rides over relaxed touring; actual range is not guaranteed.
- The approximately two-inch rear suspension travel, forward controls, solo seat, and current upper-triple-clamp recall context are essential parts of the buying decision.
What kind of motorcycle is the 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S?
The 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S is a modern performance cruiser rather than a traditional air-cooled Sportster. Its liquid-cooled Revolution Max 1250T engine, inverted fork, electronically managed rider aids, wide tires, and distinctive exhaust give it more sporting intent than the classic Sportster formula.
Harley-Davidson’s official description says the motorcycle is “made for speed and nimble handling.” That is a useful summary of the bike’s character, provided “nimble” is understood in the context of a 502-pound motorcycle with a wide front tire rather than a lightweight naked bike.

The official 2024 Sportster S specifications support the urban-cruiser case, but the specifications also reveal why the motorcycle is not ideal for every kind of city or every kind of rider.
Is the Sportster S better for urban riding or touring?
The Sportster S is better suited to solo urban riding, short recreational trips, and smooth connector highways than to rough-road commuting, two-up travel, or long-distance touring.
| Decision factor | Why the specification helps in town | What the same specification limits |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1,252 cc, 121 hp, and 93 lb-ft provide immediate acceleration for traffic gaps and highway ramps. | The performance is more than a rider needs for congested streets and requires a measured throttle hand in slippery conditions. |
| Size and weight | A 59.8-inch wheelbase and 89.4-inch overall length create a relatively short footprint for a large-engine motorcycle. | The 502-pound running-order weight is substantial when pushing the bike, parking on an incline, or making very tight low-speed maneuvers. |
| Seat and seating position | The 28.9-inch laden seat height can make frequent stops and parking-lot work less intimidating. | The seat is configured for solo riding, and the forward controls may not suit riders who prefer an upright, knees-bent position. |
| Fuel capacity | The 3.1-gallon tank is manageable for ordinary commuting and short rides. | Frequent fuel stops become part of longer trips, and the 49-mpg estimate is not a guaranteed real-world range. |
| Suspension | The adjustable 43-mm inverted fork and adjustable piggyback rear shock support spirited riding on smooth pavement. | Approximately two inches of rear travel can transmit sharp bumps and pothole impacts to the rider. |
| Electronics | Sport, Road, and Rain modes, cruise control, Bluetooth, navigation capability, and USB-C charging add commuting convenience. | Phone-based navigation still depends on compatible pairing and the Harley-Davidson app; the evidence does not establish native Google Maps mirroring. |
1. Why does the Revolution Max engine suit urban riding?
The Revolution Max 1250T gives the Sportster S immediate acceleration that is useful when merging, clearing an intersection, or moving between gaps in traffic. According to Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s 2024 specifications, the liquid-cooled engine displaces 1,252 cc and produces a claimed 121 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 93 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That output changes the Sportster S’s role. The motorcycle is not merely a relaxed V-twin cruiser that looks fast; the engine gives it strong performance for short bursts between traffic lights and enough reserve for freeway entrances. The rider can exploit that performance without needing a large touring chassis.
The qualification is equally important: abundant power is an advantage only when the rider can use it smoothly. Rain mode and traction-control intervention provide useful electronic support, but neither system replaces appropriate speed, tires in good condition, or training.
2. How does the compact footprint help in a city?
The Sportster S’s relatively short dimensions make it easier to place in urban lanes, parking spaces, and tight residential streets than its 1,252-cc engine might suggest. Harley-Davidson lists a 59.8-inch wheelbase and 89.4-inch overall length for the 2024 model.
The compact footprint does not make the Sportster S effortless at walking speed. Independent testing notes that the 160/70-17 front tire and relatively narrow handlebar make steering heavier than the motorcycle’s short dimensions suggest. The Sportster S can turn confidently, but riders should not expect scooter-like steering or the light feel of a small naked motorcycle.

3. Is the Sportster S’s low seat height useful in stop-and-go traffic?
The 28.9-inch laden seat height makes the Sportster S approachable at stops, while Harley-Davidson lists a 30.1-inch unladen seat height. The laden measurement reflects the motorcycle under load and is the more relevant figure for a rider seated on the bike.
A low seat can help when a rider has to dab a foot on uneven pavement, reverse out of a parking space, or stop repeatedly in congested traffic. Seat height is not the same as reach, however. Seat width, the rider’s position, leg length, and the forward control placement also affect whether the Sportster S feels easy to manage.
The low seat therefore supports the urban argument without guaranteeing a perfect fit. A prospective owner should sit on the motorcycle and check whether both feet, the bars, and the forward controls feel natural before buying.
4. How do the Sportster S ride modes help in town?
The Sportster S’s selectable ride modes let the rider tailor power delivery and engine behavior to changing urban conditions. The motorcycle includes Sport, Road, and Rain modes, and the rider can create a custom mode by adjusting power delivery, engine braking, and cornering behavior.

5. Which rider aids make the Sportster S more modern than a conventional cruiser?
The Sportster S includes a broad set of cornering-sensitive rider aids that add a safety layer during ordinary street riding. Standard equipment includes cornering-enhanced anti-lock braking, cornering-enhanced traction control, cornering drag-torque slip control, wheel-lift mitigation, enhanced lift mitigation, and tire-pressure monitoring.
Cornering ABS and traction control are particularly relevant when a rider encounters changing grip while turning. Drag-torque slip control manages the rear-wheel effects of aggressive deceleration, while wheel-lift mitigation helps manage hard acceleration or braking events. These systems are assistance, not permission to exceed road or weather conditions.
This equipment distinguishes the Sportster S from a stripped-down traditional cruiser. Riders still need correct tire pressure, adequate tread, smooth inputs, and a speed appropriate for visibility and traffic.
6. Does the Sportster S have cruise control and phone connectivity?
Yes. The 2024 Sportster S has cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, Harley-Davidson-app navigation capability, and USB-C charging, making the motorcycle more useful for commuting and connector highways than its minimalist styling suggests.
The 4-inch TFT display can show cruise information, while Bluetooth connectivity supports phone calls, music, and navigation functions. The USB-C outlet provides 5 volts at 3 amps for charging compatible devices. The official equipment information is listed with the 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S technology specifications.
Can a rider use Google Maps on the Sportster S? The supplied official information confirms navigation through the Harley-Davidson app, but it does not establish that Google Maps is natively mirrored on the motorcycle’s TFT display. Riders who depend on Google Maps should verify the current phone, app, and Bluetooth behavior before assuming that every Google Maps function will appear on the TFT.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. What information does the 4-inch TFT display provide?
The compact 4-inch color TFT display gives the Sportster S substantially more information than a basic analog cruiser gauge while preserving the motorcycle’s clean front-end styling.
The display can present speed, gear position, odometer, fuel level, clock, trip data, ambient temperature, cruise information, range, and tachometer information. That combination is useful in urban riding because the rider can monitor gear, fuel, and trip information without adding a large touring fairing or a bulky dashboard.
The display’s compact size is also a trade-off. Riders who want a large map view or extensive touring information should not confuse Bluetooth and H-D-app navigation capability with the large-screen experience of a full touring motorcycle.
8. How do the brakes, suspension, and chassis support sporty street riding?
The Sportster S has genuine street-performance hardware: a radially mounted four-piston Brembo front caliper, a single-piston Brembo rear caliper, a 43-mm adjustable inverted fork, and an adjustable piggyback monoshock.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Cycle World’s 2024 buyer’s guide lists a claimed 34-degree lean angle on both sides, which helps explain why the Sportster S can be ridden actively through urban bends rather than treated as a straight-line-only cruiser. The adjustable fork and rear shock also give the owner more scope to tune the motorcycle than a basic fixed-suspension cruiser.
Those components do not erase the rear suspension’s limited movement. The Cycle World Sportster S review identifies roughly two inches of rear travel as insufficient to absorb even moderately rough pavement. The motorcycle can feel composed on smooth roads while delivering a much harsher response over potholes, expansion joints, and broken asphalt.
9. Why is the Sportster S styling useful for an urban cruiser?
The Sportster S has a distinctive silhouette that stands out without requiring the length and bulk of a touring motorcycle. Harley-Davidson combines bobber-inspired front-end proportions with an XR750 flat-track-inspired tail and high-mounted exhaust, then adds sport-bike-like inverted forks and wide-profile tires.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe styling also makes the compromises visible. The solo seat does not suggest regular passenger use, the high exhaust can influence luggage choices, and the lack of a large fairing leaves the rider exposed to wind at highway speeds.
10. Which accessories make the Sportster S more practical in town?
The most useful urban accessories address navigation and wind exposure rather than adding generic motorcycle merchandise. Harley-Davidson documents a universal phone carrier with a clutch mount for RH models, making a Sportster S phone mount a logical upgrade for riders who use phone-based navigation or need a stable charging position.
Before purchasing a phone mount, verify RH1250S fitment, clutch-mount clearance, phone-case dimensions, vibration damping, charging-cable routing, and whether the mount leaves the controls unobstructed. The Harley-Davidson phone-carrier installation documentation confirms the relevant RH-model mounting approach, but a third-party listing can have different hardware and fitment.
A quick-release compact windshield is another model-specific option. Harley-Davidson lists the accessory as fitting 2021-and-later RH1250S models and describes it as providing wind deflection while preserving the Sportster S’s sporty appearance. The windshield is most useful for riders who regularly connect through faster roads, although it will not transform the motorcycle into a touring bike.
What are the main problems with the 2024 Sportster S?
The main problems with the 2024 Sportster S are its limited rear suspension travel, steering effort from the wide front tire, modest fuel capacity, forward-control ergonomics, and solo-seat layout.
Short rear suspension travel
The rear shock has approximately two inches of travel, according to independent Cycle World coverage. That is the most significant ride-quality weakness because the rear suspension can run out of useful movement on moderately rough pavement. Smooth city streets suit the motorcycle much better than pothole-heavy routes or neglected urban roads.
Wide front tire and heavier steering
The 160/70-17 front tire contributes to the Sportster S’s visual presence and cornering character, but independent testing reports heavier steering than the short wheelbase might lead a rider to expect. Tight parking maneuvers and repeated low-speed turns require more deliberate bar input than they would on a narrow-tire standard motorcycle.
Forward controls and solo seating
Forward controls can work well for riders who like a stretched-out cruiser posture, but they may be less comfortable for riders who want their weight centered over the motorcycle or who frequently stand on the pegs to absorb rough pavement. The solo-seat layout also makes the Sportster S a poor default choice for regular two-up commuting.
Small tank and limited touring practicality
Harley-Davidson lists a 3.1-gallon fuel capacity and a 49-mpg estimated city/highway figure for the 2024 Sportster S. The estimate should not be converted into a guaranteed range because traffic, throttle use, temperature, payload, tire pressure, and reserve practice all affect fuel consumption.
RevZilla’s long-distance discussion treats the tank as a reason for frequent fuel stops. The small tank does not prevent highway travel, but it makes the rider plan stops more often than a larger-tank touring motorcycle. The forward controls, solo seat, short rear travel, and limited luggage-oriented design point toward shorter solo trips rather than relaxed long-distance touring.

Some 2021–2025 RH1250S Sportster S motorcycles are covered by NHTSA recall 25V590, and a later NHTSA recall report, 26V075, addresses a related upper-triple-clamp replacement-part or casting-anomaly condition. A buyer should check the specific motorcycle by VIN rather than assume that every 2024 Sportster S is affected or already repaired.
NHTSA recall 25V590, dated September 15, 2025, concerns a fracture risk in the upper triple clamp on certain RH1250S motorcycles. NHTSA states, “The upper triple clamp may fracture.” The stated remedy is free dealer replacement. Read the NHTSA 25V590 recall document for the affected-condition and remedy details.

The stated remedy is inspection, followed by replacement if the old revision or anomaly is found. The NHTSA 26V075 recall report provides the later filing’s details.
Before buying a new or used 2024 Sportster S, obtain the VIN, check the VIN through NHTSA’s recall system, and ask an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer to confirm that every applicable remedy has been completed. Do not rely only on a seller’s statement that the motorcycle is unaffected.
How comfortable is the Sportster S for daily city riding?
The Sportster S can be comfortable for a solo rider on smooth streets, but the motorcycle is not a plush urban commuter. The low seat helps at stops, the electronics reduce workload, and the engine makes short accelerations easy; the short rear suspension and forward controls determine whether the bike remains comfortable over a full commute.
Riders on well-maintained pavement may appreciate the compact proportions and responsive engine. Riders dealing with potholes, speed bumps, patched asphalt, or frequent rough-road impacts should pay close attention to the rear shock’s limited travel. A test ride over the actual roads used for commuting is more informative than a showroom sit-down.

A rider who regularly carries a passenger, luggage, or commuting equipment should compare the available seating and carrying solutions before treating the Sportster S as a practical all-purpose machine.
How should you compare the Sportster S with an Indian Scout or Triumph Bonneville?
Compare the Sportster S with an Indian Scout, Triumph Bonneville, or another performance cruiser by intended use rather than by brand image or engine size alone. The important questions are how each motorcycle steers at walking speed, how its engine responds in traffic, how its suspension handles broken pavement, and how much practical equipment it carries.
- Urban maneuverability: Compare wheelbase, steering effort, low-speed balance, and the ease of backing each motorcycle into a parking space.
- Engine character: Compare torque delivery, throttle response, engine heat, and the amount of acceleration that is usable on the roads you actually ride.
- Comfort: Compare seat shape, handlebar position, foot-control location, suspension travel, and rough-pavement behavior rather than relying on seat height alone.
- Practicality: Compare fuel capacity, passenger accommodation, luggage options, cruise control, phone charging, and navigation capability.
- Technology and safety: Check whether each motorcycle has ride modes, cornering ABS, traction control, TPMS, and connectivity as standard equipment or as optional equipment.
- Ownership risk: Check VIN-specific recalls, dealer support, maintenance requirements, parts availability, and accessory fitment before choosing between models.
The Sportster S is especially compelling when its strong engine, low seat, styling, and electronics matter more than plush suspension, passenger capacity, or long fuel intervals.
Who should buy the 2024 Sportster S?
The 2024 Sportster S is a strong choice for a solo rider who wants a visually dramatic Harley-Davidson with modern rider aids, substantial acceleration, a low seat, and enough technology for daily commuting. The motorcycle makes the most sense when the rider’s roads are reasonably smooth and the typical trip is urban or recreational rather than a multi-day tour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S good for city riding?
Yes, the 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S is good for city riding when the rider values strong acceleration, a low 28.9-inch laden seat, compact dimensions, selectable ride modes, and modern rider aids. The approximately two-inch rear suspension travel makes the motorcycle less suitable for pothole-heavy urban roads.
Does the 2024 Sportster S have cruise control and Google Maps navigation?
The 2024 Sportster S has cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, Harley-Davidson-app navigation capability, and USB-C charging. The supplied specifications confirm H-D-app navigation, but they do not establish native Google Maps mirroring on the TFT display.

How far can the 2024 Sportster S travel on a tank?
The 2024 Sportster S has a 3.1-gallon fuel tank and Harley-Davidson’s 49-mpg estimated city/highway figure. Actual range varies with traffic, throttle use, weather, payload, tire pressure, and reserve practice, and independent long-distance coverage describes fuel stops as a limitation.
What should buyers do about 2024 Sportster S recalls?
A buyer should check the motorcycle’s VIN through NHTSA and confirm with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer that all applicable remedies are complete. NHTSA recalls 25V590 and 26V075 concern upper-triple-clamp fracture, replacement-part, or casting-anomaly issues affecting certain RH1250S motorcycles.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster S can be the perfect urban cruiser for a solo rider who values 121-hp acceleration, a low seat, compact dimensions, advanced electronics, and distinctive styling. The claim becomes much less convincing if smooth pavement, long range, passenger comfort, luggage, or plush rear suspension is the priority. Check the VIN for applicable upper-triple-clamp recalls before buying.
