There is no objective, agreed-upon ranking of the world’s “most uncool” cars. This is an editorial selection of 10 models whose reputations grew from awkward styling, disappointing reception, criticism, or an afterlife as a punchline. Some were unpopular from the start; others became uncool only in hindsight—and a few have since become cult favorites.
How these cars made the list
“Uncool” is a cultural judgment, not a measurement of engineering quality. The selection below draws on how TIME, Auto Express, and MotorTrend have discussed these cars, considering their styling, reception, reported compromises, cultural staying power, and the context that complicates the joke. The publications do not agree on a definitive top ten, so the entries are not ranked.
10 cars with enduring uncool reputations
Pontiac Aztek (2001)
The Aztek’s angular, busy styling made it an easy target, and its reveal provoked a memorable reaction. TIME writer Dan Neil recalled being at the Detroit auto show when GM unveiled it: “I was in the audience at the Detroit auto show the day GM unveiled the Pontiac Aztek and I will never forget the gasp that audience made.” That is Neil’s personal recollection, not an official statement from GM.
TIME’s account says design changes and cost cutting compromised the original concept, but also describes the Aztek as a useful, competent crossover. Auto Express highlights features aimed at outdoor use, including a removable cooler, split tailgate, and optional tent. The same car can therefore be a styling punchline and a practical vehicle—and its later cult following shows that an uncool reputation can become part of a car’s appeal.

- Display Piece: A must-have collectible for car enthusiasts and model collectors.
AMC Gremlin (1970)
The Gremlin’s abruptly shortened rear end gave it one of the most recognizable silhouettes in American car history. TIME says AMC’s design team shortened the Hornet to save time and money, resulting in the Gremlin’s unusually truncated shape. TIME also criticizes its equipment and handling; those are the publication’s assessments, not independent test findings established here.
Its looks were inseparable from its origins: the unusual proportions were not an elaborate stylistic flourish so much as the visible result of a cost- and time-conscious redesign.
Rank #2

- Pullback Action
- Die Cast Metal Body
- PULL BACK ACTION WITH FREE ROLLING WHEELS
Yugo GV (1985)
The Yugo GV entered the U.S. market in 1985 and quickly became shorthand for a bad car. TIME’s account reflects that harsh reputation, but it is critical editorial writing—not a reliability study or a comprehensive history of Yugoslav production. The model’s place on an uncool-car list is best understood as a story about its image in the United States, rather than a measured verdict on every example or market.
Ford Edsel (1958)
The Edsel is often remembered as a spectacular commercial failure, but failure and poor engineering are not the same thing. TIME links its reputation to a mix of heavy hype, pricing, fuel consumption, the timing of a recession, and public response—and cautions that the car itself may not have been as bad as its legend suggests.
Rank #3
- Highly detailed 1:24 scale diecast model kit of 1929 Ford Model A
- Comes with everything needed for assembly including screwdriver
- Features opening parts, rolling wheels and pre-painted metal body
- Easy to assemble, creates fully functional rolling replica model car
- Fun and educational STEM activity for kids to build realistic miniature vehicle
That distinction makes the Edsel a useful case: a product can become uncool because expectations and circumstances collide, even when the verdict on the machine itself is less clear-cut.
Chrysler PT Cruiser
The PT Cruiser’s reception changed with time. Auto Express says it was favourably received at launch and notes that Motor Trend was among the outlets that named it car of the year. Chrysler hoped it would attract younger, cooler buyers, but the model later struggled to hold that appeal. Auto Express criticizes its shape and driving experience.
Rank #4
- Superior Quality: The body of our die-casting metal black toy car is composed of zinc alloy, while the interior and chassis are constructed of ABS plastic.Its whole window glass construction makes it incredibly strong, resilient to drops and impacts, and equipped with non-slip rubber tires. The product weighs 1.1 pounds, product size: 8.1*2.4*3.7 in;
- Door Opening Design: Our Hellcat model car's left and right doors, the hood, and the trunk can all be opened and closed,and the rearview mirrors can also be folded.The interior and exterior decorations are very realistic, with very delicate details, restoring the texture of the real car. It is ideal for collectors of model cars and may be used to adorn boys' rooms and men's offices;
- Pull Back Function: The rear wheels of our Hellcat pull back black model car automobile may be used to gently draw the vehicle back a predetermined distance by applying pressure to the body, when it is released, the vehicle will proceed ahead on its own,and the front wheels can be steered left and right, the real four-wheeled flexible rotation;
- Three-Speed Switch: To suit your various demands, our black model car's lighting and sound effects may be separately controlled. (1. Turn off the power, 2. The lights are always on, 3. Trigger type lighting sound effects). Pressing the steering wheel can trigger the speaker sound and light effects, and pressing the car body can simulate the engine's roar;
- Ideal Present: A toy car that is ideal for boys three years old and older,and can also be a part of adult car model collection,bringing children happy gaming time, teaching them car knowledge, improving hands-on ability, and also serving as an art piece for adults to decorate their homes;
Its story is less about instant rejection than fashion turning. A distinctive retro design that first stood out can look dated—or simply uncool—to a later audience.
SsangYong Rodius
The first-generation Rodius is remembered chiefly for its proportions. Auto Express judged its styling harshly and awarded it one star in its review. That rating and aesthetic judgment belong to Auto Express; they are not a universal consensus or a measure of the model’s performance in every respect.

Triumph TR7 (1975)
The wedge-shaped TR7 divided opinion, with MotorTrend’s ugly-car feature calling attention to its thick roof pillars and narrow windows. The design’s visibility and proportions became central to its visual reputation. MotorTrend also repeats a story connecting the roof structure to anticipated U.S. rollover standards; that explanation should be treated as a reported story, not established regulatory history.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why “uncool” does not mean “bad car”
These examples show several different routes to an uncool reputation: a styling decision that became a lasting joke, an initially poor public response, a commercial failure amplified by circumstance, or a design that fell out of fashion. Some models also had practical strengths or favourable moments that the punchline leaves out.
TIME, Auto Express, and MotorTrend offer different editorial selections, not a shared scoring system. Their lists can help explain why certain cars attract attention, but they cannot establish a universal ranking of the ten least-cool cars ever made. Whether a car is ugly, charming, useful, or all three remains a matter of taste.
