The shortlist below compares ten small electric cars by German base/list price, not by confirmed dealer offers or total ownership cost. Prices are in euros, and listed ranges are test-cycle figures—not promises of everyday distance.
What counts as a cheap small electric car?
“Cheap” here means a relatively low starting list price in Germany. ADAC’s April 2026 overview provides a useful market-specific comparison, but its figures are not a ranking of transaction prices, and availability or current offers can vary. The order below is strictly from lowest to highest listed price; the Micra therefore comes just ahead of the Renault 5.
The shortlist is relevant to Germany, not a universal price guide. The International Energy Agency reported that in Europe in 2024, around 5% of available battery-electric models cost less than €30,000, while models below €25,000 made up 3%. Those are 2024 market figures published in the IEA’s 2025 Global EV Outlook affordability analysis, not current prices for any particular car. The IEA also noted that about 40% of available electric models in China were priced below $25,000 in 2024, and nearly 95% of Chinese small-car sales that year were electric. These different markets and currencies should not be treated as direct price comparisons.

How to choose among the lower-priced options
For the lowest listed entry price
The Dacia Spring Electric 70 has the lowest starting price in this group at €16,900, paired with a listed range of 221 km. It is the clearest choice if the first question is simply which example starts at the lowest German list price. Whether it suits your driving depends on your regular distances and charging access.

For more range within a model family
Some models have distinct battery and price steps rather than one representative specification. The ADAC overview lists a 49 kWh Hyundai Inster for €25,900 and 370 km, and a 61 kWh Kia EV2 for €33,490 and 453 km. The lower-priced 42 kWh Inster and 42.2 kWh EV2 are the versions in the main shortlist. Confirm that a comparison is using the same trim and battery before weighing price against range.
For recognizable compact-car alternatives
The Nissan Micra, Renault 5, and Renault 4 entries are close together in price, but their listed ranges are not identical. The Micra 40 kWh is €27,990 and 317 km; the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric 120 Urban Range is €28,000 and 307 km; and the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric 120 Urban Range is €29,500 and 308 km. A €10 difference between the Micra and Renault 5 list prices is too small to decide on its own: compare the precise equipment, body style, and local offer.

What the range figures do—and do not—tell you
The kilometres in ADAC’s table are listed range figures, not a guarantee of real-world driving distance. ADAC warns that actual range varies with driving profile, temperature, and speed. Consider your common routes and the conditions you drive in, then allow for a practical charging margin rather than assuming you can routinely use the full published figure.
Battery capacity is another reason not to compare price alone. The shortlist includes cars with distinct battery versions, and in some cases a larger-battery variant costs substantially more. Before comparing listings, confirm the model year, exact trim, battery size, and the source’s range figure. Charging capability, warranty, and included equipment also matter, but a consistent set of those specifications is not established here for every model.

Why “almost anyone can afford” is not a safe conclusion
A low list price does not establish affordability for every household. It says nothing by itself about income, access to financing, insurance, electricity, maintenance, depreciation, or the price offered to an individual buyer. The sources available for this comparison do not provide one consistent ownership-cost dataset for all ten cars, so the list should be read as a comparison of starting prices—not a verdict on the cheapest car to own.
The broader market remains uneven. The IEA’s 2025 analysis says that 60% of announced electric models with known prices were expected to launch below $30,000; these were expected launches, not necessarily cars already on sale. It also reports a median price paid for a battery-electric car in 2024 of around $24,000, approximately $700 below the median for an ICE car in the relevant market comparison. Neither figure is a Germany-specific quote for one of the cars above. As the IEA put it, “Availability of a wide range of affordable EV models will be key to unlocking mass-market adoption.”
What about U.S. buyers?
The German euro list prices above should not be compared directly with U.S. dollar prices. Nissan’s U.S. manufacturer page lists the 2026 LEAF at $29,990 for the S+ FWD, $34,230 for the SV+ FWD, and $38,990 for the Platinum+ FWD. Nissan’s press kit identifies these as MSRP figures excluding tax, title, license, and destination and handling charges; it lists a $1,575 destination and handling charge separately from the $29,990 base MSRP.
The 2026 LEAF is a crossover-design vehicle, so it belongs in a broader small-EV conversation rather than a strict small-hatchback comparison. Nissan lists a 75 kWh battery across all three U.S. trims and dimensions of 173.4 inches long, 71.3 inches wide without mirrors, and 61.3 inches tall. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent road-test findings. Check local inventory and dealer pricing before treating MSRP as an offer.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before buying
- Compare current local offers, not just a published base price; check that the offer is for the same model year, trim, and battery.
- Match the listed range to your routes and likely driving conditions, and identify charging options at home, work, or along frequent journeys.
- Check passenger space, cargo capacity, and exterior dimensions against how you actually use a car.
- Compare charging capability, warranty, and standard equipment in the exact versions available to you.
- Estimate ownership costs separately. Residual value, insurance, efficiency, and maintenance can all affect the real cost of keeping a car.
