The Cadillac 500 is the biggest well-documented GM passenger-car V8 in the list. “Biggest” means nominal displacement—not horsepower, torque, physical size, or production volume.
This ranking covers distinct displacement sizes and includes passenger-car engines, truck engines, and Chevrolet Performance crate engines. The three separate Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac 455 families are treated as a tie at one rank rather than as three entries. The GMC 637 figure rests on a secondary reference, so it is less firmly documented than the manufacturer and GM Heritage figures cited for other engines.
GM’s biggest V8 engines, ranked
Displacement is listed in cubic inches, largest first. Application type matters: a crate engine is not a factory-installed production-car engine, and a truck engine is not automatically a passenger-car engine.
| Rank | Engine | Displacement | Application and evidence | Documented output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GMC 637 V8 | 637 cu in | Large gasoline truck V8; the displacement is reported by a secondary reference, not confirmed here by a GMC or GM manufacturer source. Curbside Classic. | Not stated in the cited reference. |
| 2 | Chevrolet ZZ632/1000 | 632 cu in (10.4L) | Chevrolet Performance crate engine; not a production-car engine. Chevrolet calls the 632 family “The largest, most powerful Chevrolet Big-Block ever.” Chevrolet Performance. | 1,004 hp and 876 lb-ft, manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results. Chevrolet Performance. |
| 3 | Cadillac 500 V8 | 500 cu in | Production Cadillac passenger-car engine; MAHLE lists applications for 1970–1976. MAHLE catalog. | Not stated in the cited catalog. |
| 4 | Chevrolet 572 crate engines | 572 cu in (9.4L) | Chevrolet Performance crate-engine family, including ZZ572/620 and ZZ572/720R. Chevrolet Performance. | Not stated here for the family as a whole. |
| 5 | Chevrolet 502 crate engines | 502 cu in (8.2L) | Chevrolet Performance crate-engine family. Chevrolet Performance. | Not stated here for the family as a whole. |
| 6 | GMC Vortec 496 | 496 cu in (8.1L) | GMC Vortec V8; MAHLE lists applications for 2001–2007. MAHLE catalog. | Not stated in the cited catalog. |
| 7 | Cadillac 472 V8 | 472 cu in | GM Heritage documents it in the 1968 Fleetwood Brougham. GM Heritage. | 375 hp in the 1968 Fleetwood Brougham, per GM Heritage. |
| 8 (tie) | Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac 455 V8 families | 455 cu in each | Distinct division-specific engine families, not one shared engine. MAHLE lists Oldsmobile and Pontiac 455 applications; GM Heritage documents the 1970 Buick GSX and Oldsmobile 442. MAHLE catalog; GM Heritage: Buick GSX; GM Heritage: Oldsmobile 442. | 1970 Buick GSX: 350 hp and 510 lb-ft; 1970 Oldsmobile W30: 370 hp. These are model-specific historical ratings, not directly comparable across eras or rating methods. |
| 9 | Chevrolet 454 | 454 cu in | Chevrolet Performance lists 454-cubic-inch big-block crate engines. Chevrolet Performance. | Not stated here for the family as a whole. |
| 10 | Chevrolet 427 | 427 cu in | GM Heritage documents the 427 as an available 1966 Corvette engine. GM Heritage. | Offered in 390- or 425-hp versions in the 1966 Corvette, according to GM Heritage. |
Why the GMC 637 ranks above Chevrolet’s 632
On the reported nominal displacement figures, 637 cubic inches is larger than 632. That puts the GMC truck V8 first in this broad list, but the evidence is uneven: the 637 figure comes from a secondary reference, while Chevrolet’s 632 is documented on Chevrolet Performance’s product page. Treat the GMC placement as a qualified claim, not a definitive manufacturer-verified record.

What the Cadillac 500 was—and why it is not first here
The Cadillac 500 is the largest well-documented GM passenger-car V8 in this ranking, with MAHLE listing 1970–1976 applications. It is not the largest entry overall because the list also includes the GMC 637 truck engine and Chevrolet’s 632 crate engine. The ZZ632 is larger than the Cadillac 500 by nominal displacement, but it is a crate engine rather than a factory-installed passenger-car engine.
Why the 455s share one rank
Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac each had a distinct 455-cubic-inch V8 family. They tie because this ranking counts displacement sizes, not individual engine variants; listing each 455 separately would crowd smaller-displacement engines out of the ten-size list.

Displacement also does not determine horsepower rank. For example, GM Heritage lists the 1970 Buick GSX at 350 hp and 510 lb-ft, while its 1970 Oldsmobile 442 page documents the W30 at 370 hp. Those are different engines and model configurations, and historical horsepower ratings should not be treated as directly comparable without accounting for rating methods and vehicle specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the horsepower figures
Only include the output figure where the cited material establishes a specific rating. Chevrolet Performance lists the ZZ632/1000 at 1,004 hp and 876 lb-ft; GM Heritage records particular historical vehicle ratings for the Cadillac 472, Buick GSX, Oldsmobile W30, and Corvette 427. These are not a uniform set of controlled tests. The values come from different products, years, and sources, so they do not make a reliable standalone ranking of which engine was most powerful.
