Start with the amount you can spend out the door, then compare powertrains, safety ratings for the exact model year, and how comfortably you can see, sit and park in each vehicle. The models below are a shortlist of 10 options for different priorities—not a ranked test of ten equivalent vehicles. The available price and fuel-economy figures are not equally complete across the list.
Quick start: Set an out-the-door ceiling, decide whether you need all-wheel drive (AWD) or can charge an electric vehicle, and check standard safety equipment and independent ratings before comparing dealer offers. Take your finalists on a test drive to assess visibility, parking, seat comfort and controls.
How to use this shortlist
“Small SUV” covers vehicles with different prices, powertrains and space. The candidates here include conventional gas models, hybrids, an available electric version and vehicles that may sit outside a mainstream first-time-buyer budget. Treat the list as a starting point, not a universal top-ten ranking.
- Compare the actual transaction: Check the vehicle’s trim, options, destination charges, dealer availability and out-the-door price rather than relying on a starting MSRP.
- Match safety information to the vehicle: Confirm model year and, where the award listing specifies one, build date. Check which driver-assistance features are standard on the trim you are considering.
- Choose a powertrain for your driving: Compare estimated fuel economy and the cost or practicality of AWD. A plug-in or fully electric option only makes sense if its charging requirements fit your routine.
- Check fit in person: Test rear-seat and cargo needs, sightlines, ease of parking, seat comfort and the location of frequently used controls.
- Compare ownership costs: Get current, comparable figures for insurance, maintenance and warranty coverage before deciding which vehicle is cheaper to own.

1. Hyundai Kona: a lower starting-price option
The 2026 Hyundai Kona is a compact option to investigate if keeping the initial price down is a priority. An Associated Press report of Edmunds’ 2026 recommendations gives it a starting price of $26,950 and an EPA-estimated 26–31 mpg, depending on trim and drivetrain. The report describes a base 147-hp four-cylinder, a turbocharged engine on higher trims and an available electric version. IIHS lists the 2026 Kona as a Top Safety Pick+. 2. Kia Sportage Hybrid: for buyers prioritizing fuel economy
The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is an option if you want a hybrid compact SUV. Edmunds figures reported by AP put its starting price at $31,735 and EPA-estimated fuel economy at 42 mpg combined, or 35 mpg with AWD. IIHS’s 2026 Top Safety Pick+ award for the Sportage applies only to vehicles built after May 2025, so check the build date of the specific vehicle. 3. Hyundai Tucson: a safety-led candidate

4. Mazda CX-5: check the award, not just the test-selection list
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and appears on NHTSA’s list of 2026 model-year vehicles selected for testing. Selection for testing is not a completed NHTSA rating, so do not treat the list as a five-star result. Consumer Reports displays a $29,990–$38,990 base-MSRP range, accessed October 8, 2026. 5. Mazda CX-50: another IIHS award recipient
The 2026 Mazda CX-50 is listed as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The cited sources do not establish a comparable current price or fuel-economy figure here, so check the configuration you are considering directly rather than inferring its value from another Mazda model. IIHS award list.

IIHS says its awards identify strong safety choices within vehicle size categories for a given year. For 2026 Top Safety Pick+, the criteria include good ratings in the small-overlap front, moderate-overlap front and side tests; acceptable or good headlights; and qualifying standard front-crash-prevention performance. Award listings can include model-year and build-date limits. Check the listing against the specific vehicle’s model year and production date, and verify standard equipment on its trim. IIHS’s small-SUV ratings table explains individual tests. For example, in the small-overlap test, a vehicle traveling at 40 mph strikes a rigid barrier with 25% of its front width. IIHS advises comparing front-crash ratings among vehicles of similar weight. An award or single test result is one part of the safety picture; check the vehicle-specific ratings and equipment rather than assuming every trim performs or equips itself identically. How to narrow the options before visiting a dealer
- Set a firm out-the-door limit. Ask dealers for a written total that includes the vehicle’s chosen trim and options, fees and taxes. Compare like-for-like offers, not one vehicle’s base price against another’s heavily equipped trim.
- Choose the powertrain and drivetrain you can use. Compare the Kona’s reported gas estimates with the Sportage Hybrid’s, and decide whether AWD is worth its cost and efficiency trade-off. If considering an electric model, first make sure home, workplace or nearby charging fits your routine.

- Request comparable ownership-cost information. Get insurance quotes for the specific model and trim; ask about warranty coverage and scheduled maintenance; and compare any available cost estimates on the same time and mileage basis.
