Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The strongest documented example here is the 2026 Honda Prelude, whose maker describes a volume knob and large physical buttons; the 2026 Nissan Sentra also retains physical buttons and steering-wheel switches. Other models on this list are promising simpler-car candidates, but their exact controls vary by trim and should be checked in person. This guide focuses on U.S.-market models and treats “low tech” as ease of use, not the absence of modern features.
What counts as a car without annoying tech overload?
There is no standardized published score for “tech overload,” so the list below is a practical shortlist, not a measured ranking. A car feels simpler when you can handle routine tasks—especially changing temperature, adjusting volume, selecting a drive mode, and managing common settings—with a knob, button, or steering-wheel switch instead of navigating several screen menus.
That test is different from asking whether a car has a touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, or driver-assistance technology. A modern car can have all three and still be relatively straightforward to operate. The important distinction is what the driver can do quickly without taking attention away from the road.
Evidence about individual controls is uneven: manufacturer materials describe some layouts in detail, while others establish only that a model is currently listed. Treat controls as trim-specific and verify the exact car you intend to buy.

10 gas cars to consider
1. Honda Civic: the everyday all-rounder
Honda’s 2026 catalog lists gasoline Civic variants, and Consumer Reports’ 2026 material calls the gas Civic an excellent small car and gives it a 33-mpg figure. Those points make it a strong mainstream starting place if you want a conventional compact car rather than an electric vehicle.
The available information does not establish that every Civic trim has the same physical climate or audio controls. Check the exact trim’s dash and infotainment layout, and try changing temperature and audio settings without using the center screen. Also check whether the driver-assistance alerts can be customized to your preference.
2. Honda Civic Si: a manual-transmission option
The Civic Si is a current variant in Honda’s catalog and gives shoppers a manual-transmission performance choice within the Civic family. It may suit someone who wants a more involved drive without moving to a luxury-brand interface.
Confirm local allocation and equipment for the specific trim. The available information does not establish the Si’s full control layout or alert-customization options, so inspect those rather than assuming they match another Civic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Honda’s current catalog also lists the Civic Type R. Its performance-focused, driver-centered layout makes it a candidate for drivers who prefer a cockpit organized around driving rather than a broad set of luxury functions.

It is a more specialized choice than the regular Civic: price, ride, and local availability can narrow its appeal. Check the exact car for the controls you care about and confirm that a Type R is available to order or buy in your market.
4. Honda Prelude: the clearest case for real buttons
The 2026 Prelude offers the most direct evidence in this group for a modern car designed around easier controls. Honda says: “Designed with simplicity in mind, the intuitive 9-inch system features a volume knob, large physical buttons, easy-to-recognize icons, and a finger rest to make it easy to use the touchscreen while the vehicle is in motion.” That is a manufacturer description of the system, not an independent usability score.
If you are asking which new car has a physical volume control, this is the strongest documented answer in the shortlist. Check the car yourself for the other everyday tasks you want to handle without a menu, such as climate adjustments and drive settings.
5. Toyota Corolla: start with lower or mid trims
Toyota’s 2025 lineup page lists the Corolla. For shoppers prioritizing conventional gasoline power and straightforward operation, lower and mid trims are sensible places to begin comparing equipment.
The exact infotainment system, physical controls, and safety package depend on trim. Inspect the car’s climate and audio controls and confirm the equipment on the window sticker; the lineup listing alone does not establish which routine tasks use buttons versus the screen.

6. Toyota Corolla Hatchback: compact size with hatchback flexibility
Toyota’s current cars lineup includes the Corolla Hatchback. Its compact footprint and hatchback body make it a useful alternative if you want more cargo flexibility than a small sedan offers.
Screen and control details should be verified for the specific trim. Before choosing one, try the common adjustments from the driver’s seat and check whether the driver-assistance settings are easy to locate and tailor.
7. Toyota GR86: a small sports car with a driver-first mission
Toyota’s current sports-car lineup includes the GR family, making the GR86 a natural candidate for drivers who want a focused sports-car experience rather than a feature-heavy luxury cabin. Its rear-seat and cargo practicality are limited, so it is less suitable if you need a do-everything family car.
Verify 2026 ordering status in your market and inspect the exact car’s control layout. The available information does not establish that every routine setting can be changed without the central screen.
8. Mazda3 sedan or hatchback: conventional steering-wheel controls
Mazda’s 2025 release documents push-button start, Bluetooth, USB-C, and conventional steering-wheel audio and cruise controls. Mazda USA’s current 2026 vehicle page lists the Mazda3 2.5 S FWD at 27 mpg city, 36 highway, and 30 combined. The sedan and hatchback give buyers two body styles to consider.

- V8 POWER: The model features a 400 cubic inch V8 engine, reflecting the muscle and power that defined the GTO's reputation.
- DETAILED SUSPENSION & EXHAUST: The kit incorporates separate rear suspension and exhaust detailing, adding to the realism of the model.
- BUCKET SEATS & CONSOLE: The model's interior features bucket seats and a floor shifter with a console, capturing the iconic look and feel of the GTO.
- OPTIONAL SUPERCHARGER: For those seeking more power, the kit offers an optional supercharger, allowing you to customize your model.
- CLEAR & COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS: The included instructions are clear and user-friendly, making the kit accessible to modelers of different skill levels, from beginners to experienced hobbyists.
Those published details support the case for familiar controls on the steering wheel, but they do not settle how every climate or vehicle setting is accessed. Try the infotainment and climate functions in the specific trim you are considering.

9. Mazda MX-5 Miata: simplicity through a smaller mission
Mazda’s current vehicle catalog lists the MX-5 family. The Miata’s small, analog-focused sports-car mission and limited cabin functions make it appealing to drivers who want a simpler driving experience rather than a large menu of comfort and utility features.
That simplicity comes with clear compromises: space is limited, and the car is less useful for carrying bulky cargo or dealing with poor weather as an only vehicle. Check the current local model and trim for the controls and equipment you need.
10. Nissan Sentra: familiar controls with current connectivity
Nissan’s 2026 Sentra press kit says the sedan retains several physical buttons and steering-wheel-mounted switches despite its dual-screen layout. That makes it a value-oriented option to inspect if you want familiar controls without giving up current connectivity.
The dual screens mean it is not a screen-free choice. Try the climate and audio controls in person, and find out whether common settings and driver-assistance alerts are easy to adjust on the trim you are considering.

What to check before choosing a trim
A model name alone cannot tell you whether a car will feel simple to operate. Use the exact trim and equipment you plan to buy for this quick in-person check:
- Climate: Adjust temperature and fan speed from the driver’s seat. Note whether those controls are dedicated buttons or knobs, or require a screen menu.
- Audio: Change volume and skip a track without searching through menus. Check whether a physical knob or steering-wheel switch is available.
- Common settings: Find drive modes and the settings you expect to change regularly. A screen is less of a problem if these tasks are direct and easy to remember.
- Safety alerts: Ask how to customize the driver-assistance alerts and whether the preference remains set after restarting the car.
- Trim match: Compare the actual car’s equipment with its window sticker or build sheet. Do not assume that a control layout shown on one version is standard across the model range.
If those tasks feel clear on a parked test vehicle, take the same trim on a test drive and see whether its controls remain intuitive while driving. A feature can exist and still be frustrating if it takes too many steps to reach.
Other models worth a look
Subaru Crosstrek and Forester: utility first
The Crosstrek is worth considering if all-weather traction and hatchback-like utility matter more than sedan simplicity. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Top Picks material lists an 83 overall score and 29 mpg for the gas Crosstrek.
The Forester is a roomier alternative for buyers who need more space. Consumer Reports’ 2026 material lists an 86 overall score and 29 mpg for the gas Forester, and a hybrid is also available. Those scores and fuel-economy figures do not by themselves establish how easy a particular trim’s controls are to use, so apply the same in-person check.

Consumer Reports describes the latest Camry as delivering “a pleasing balance of ride comfort and capable handling, practical interior space, and user-friendly controls that make good use of physical knobs and switches.” Its 2026 material lists 37 mpg for the hybrid. If you are open to a hybrid rather than a gasoline-only model, it is a strong alternative to inspect for physical controls.
