If you want a new SUV under $30,000, the ten models below are a useful starting point: each is a subcompact SUV on Cars.com’s July 10, 2026 list of the cheapest new SUVs. The list is ordered by base price, not by a measured performance score. Here, “everyday performance” means the balance of commuting comfort, passing and merging ability, fuel use, usable space, and traction for your climate—not maximum speed or track ability.
Prices are list prices including destination, before taxes and cash incentives; they are not dealer quotes. EPA figures in the comparison are for front-wheel-drive versions except the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Mazda CX-30, which have standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Cars.com’s July 2026 list notes that AWD adds about $1,500–$2,000 to most models where it is offered. The Venue, Trax, and Envista are not offered with AWD.
How to compare affordable SUVs for everyday driving
A low starting price does not guarantee the same ownership fit. For commuting, consider fuel economy and comfort; for regular highway travel, look for enough passing and merging reserve; for winter or rough-weather driving, compare AWD availability and its added cost. Families and cargo users should pay close attention to cabin and cargo utility rather than assuming all subcompact SUVs are equally practical.
Car and Driver says its SUV evaluations draw on instrumented tests and editor impressions from real-world driving, using roughly 200 data points across factors such as acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. Its ratings are editorial comparisons, not a claim that one vehicle is best for every buyer. Car and Driver’s 2026 SUV rankings offer context alongside the price-ordered Cars.com list.

10 new affordable SUVs and their starting prices
The following ten choices are ordered by Cars.com’s July 2026 base-price list. Prices include destination but exclude taxes and cash incentives. Combined EPA estimates are included where reported; figures for FWD versions are not directly comparable to the standard-AWD Outlander Sport and CX-30.

What the three cheapest SUVs are like to drive
Hyundai Venue SE: lowest price and efficient commuting
Cars.com lists the 2026 Venue SE at $22,150 including destination and reports a 31-mpg combined EPA estimate for its FWD configuration. It uses a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated at 121 horsepower. Cars.com highlights its price, equipment, and efficiency; the trade-off for buyers who need traction from all four wheels is straightforward: the Venue is not offered with AWD. Chevrolet Trax LS: pleasant around town, less passing reserve
The 2026 Trax LS starts at $23,495 including destination and has a reported 30-mpg combined EPA estimate. Its 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder makes 137 horsepower, and the Trax is FWD only. Cars.com describes its power as sufficient for errands but says highway merging and passing leave limited reserve. Car and Driver, separately, characterizes the driving experience as pleasant for the price and gives it a 10/10 on its ranking page. Cars.com says the engine is adequate when driven patiently and that passing takes patience. For 2026, the publication also reports a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display. For fuel-conscious commuting
The Venue and Kicks both have reported 31-mpg combined EPA estimates in FWD form; the Trax is listed at 30 mpg combined. Those estimates provide a starting point, not a guarantee of real-world results, which vary with driving conditions. The Corolla Cross is another efficiency-minded option: Car and Driver lists 30–32 mpg combined and describes its appeal as value-oriented efficiency and utility, with less emphasis on excitement.

For winter weather or rougher conditions

For frequent highway driving
Passing and merging confidence deserve a test drive on the roads you use. Cars.com specifically notes limited reserve in the Trax and says the Kicks asks for patient passing. These are publication assessments, not instrumented acceleration figures. If you regularly travel with passengers or cargo, pay particular attention to how each candidate responds under that load.

For driving enjoyment versus cabin utility
Car and Driver praises the Mazda CX-30’s near-luxury interior and driving verve, while identifying its smaller cabin as a utility compromise; its listed combined EPA range is 25–27 mpg. The Corolla Cross takes the opposite emphasis in Car and Driver’s description: efficiency and utility rather than excitement. Neither character makes one a universal winner—choose based on whether the cabin, driving feel, or fuel economy matters most to you.
How the 2026 price snapshot should guide a purchase
The list reflects July 10, 2026 prices, with destination included and taxes and cash incentives excluded. A dealer’s advertised price or out-the-door quote can differ because of incentives, local fees, inventory, and vehicle configuration. Compare like with like: the listed FWD base prices do not represent AWD versions, and the two models with standard AWD have a different equipment baseline.
Honda’s official May 21, 2025 release provides a useful example of careful price labeling, though the HR-V is not one of the ten cheapest SUVs in this list. Honda priced the 2026 HR-V LX FWD at $26,200 before its $1,395 destination charge, or $27,595 with destination, and gave it a 28-mpg combined EPA estimate. The same release says the 2026 HR-V adds a standard 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. Affordability can also mean value in a different vehicle class. An Associated Press article reporting Edmunds’ 2026 recommendations named the Hyundai Kona its small-SUV pick and the Kia Sportage Hybrid its compact-SUV pick; it reported estimated combined fuel economy of 42 mpg for the FWD Sportage Hybrid and 35 mpg with AWD. Those vehicles and criteria are not a direct extension of the cheapest-subcompact list, but the example shows why buyers may want to weigh efficiency and class utility alongside the lowest sticker price.
