There is no defensible universal top ten for motorcycle reliability in the available evidence: recent-owner quality scores and roadworthiness inspection pass rates measure different things. But they offer useful, qualified examples of motorcycles that make reliability worth discussing—from India-market commuter models recognized for fewer early ownership problems to larger bikes with strong Great Britain MOT results.
What these reliability signals do—and do not—show
J.D. Power’s 2025 India Two-Wheeler Initial Quality Study (2WIQS) reports problems experienced by new owners, not lifetime mechanical failure rates. It surveyed 6,503 owners who bought motorcycles from May through December 2024. The study was fielded from October 2024 through January 2025, covered 80 models from 12 makes in 42 major Indian cities, and measured eight problem areas, including engine, brakes, electricals, ride and handling, and transmission. Its PP100 score means problems per 100 vehicles; lower is better. J.D. Power’s 2025 study results identify segment leaders, not proven long-term survivors.
A different signal comes from the 2025 Great Britain MOT model results aggregated by MotoDealers.co.uk from DVSA records. These show first-test roadworthiness pass rates, not engine longevity or a complete record of costly mechanical faults. The dataset covers 722,608 tests across 870 models and 44 makes, with an overall first-test pass rate of 86.87%; model results are published only after at least 200 tests. Its MOT reliability data and methodology cautions that age and owner upkeep affect results, and that an MOT does not reveal every gearbox or engine problem.
For that reason, the ten motorcycles below are evidence-based examples, not a global ranking. India-market initial-quality findings and Great Britain inspection results should not be combined into a single score.

Ten motorcycles with useful reliability evidence
1. TVS Radeon: an economy-bike initial-quality leader
The TVS Radeon led J.D. Power’s motorcycle economy segment in the 2025 India study with 54 PP100. That is a strong new-owner problem score for its segment and study period. It says nothing by itself about how the bike fares after years of use, and the result applies to the India market.
2. Hero Super Splendor / XTEC: a joint executive-segment leader
Hero’s Super Splendor / XTEC tied for the motorcycle executive segment lead at 72 PP100 in the same study. The finding supports a claim about initial owner-reported quality—not lifetime reliability or a comparison with models in other segments.

- High tech, aerodynamic, sport styled Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell
- AREM rotational energy management meets ECE 22.06 standards
- Dynamic, flow-through ventilation
- Helmet shown with optional tinted shield. (Ships with clear shield only)
- DOT approved. Meets the FMVSS 218 Standard
3. Honda Shine 125: shares the executive-segment lead
The Honda Shine 125 also scored 72 PP100, tying with the Hero Super Splendor / XTEC for the executive-segment lead. It is another India-market example where the evidence is specific and recent, but limited to early ownership problems.
4. TVS Apache RTR 160 2V: upper executive-segment leader
The TVS Apache RTR 160 2V led J.D. Power’s motorcycle upper executive segment at 53 PP100. The score is the lowest of the three segment-leading results cited here, but PP100 values from different segments should not be treated as a universal cross-class ranking.

5. Suzuki DL 650 X AM1: a strong MOT result, with a modest sample
In the 2025 Great Britain MOT model results, the Suzuki DL 650 X AM1 recorded a 96.89% pass rate across 225 tests. That result is a roadworthiness inspection signal from a sample that clears the site’s 200-test publication threshold. It does not establish the model’s engine life or its likelihood of avoiding expensive repairs.
6. BMW R 1250 GS TE: a high pass rate across more tests
The BMW R 1250 GS TE recorded a 96.46% MOT pass rate across 2,512 tests in the same Great Britain dataset. The larger sample provides more observations than the Suzuki result, but the percentage still measures MOT outcomes rather than lifetime mechanical reliability. Neither result should be read as a head-to-head durability test.

7–10. More candidates need model-specific evidence
There is not enough model-specific evidence in these sources to responsibly name four additional motorcycles as reliability standouts. Adding names simply to reach ten would imply a level of comparison the data do not support. A buyer considering another model should look for comparable, model-specific evidence—particularly owner reports with a defined time period or inspection results with disclosed sample sizes—in the relevant market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use these examples when choosing a motorcycle
- Match the evidence to your question. A low PP100 result speaks to problems reported by recent buyers; an MOT pass rate speaks to roadworthiness at inspection. Neither substitutes for the other.
- Check geography and model designation. J.D. Power’s named segment leaders are from India. The MOT results are from Great Britain and identify specific model variants, including the DL 650 X AM1 and R 1250 GS TE.
- Read the sample size alongside the percentage. A pass rate based on 225 tests is not as broadly observed as one based on 2,512 tests. A larger sample improves the context for interpretation but does not turn an inspection result into a lifetime-failure statistic.
- Inspect the individual bike’s history. Service records, condition, age, mileage, and evidence of correct upkeep matter when evaluating a used motorcycle. KTM’s US warranty guidance, for example, makes coverage model-dependent and requires adherence to the motorcycle’s service schedule; those terms are specific to KTM in the United States and should not be generalized to other brands or markets. Why maintenance belongs in any reliability discussion
A model’s reputation cannot erase the effects of neglect or poor repairs. J.D. Power’s 2025 study also reported concerns involving faster early wear and tear, including performance degradation, increased vibration, braking inefficiencies, and component durability. As Pronab Gorai, engagement director at Differential in Singapore, put it: “While initial satisfaction with vehicle’s performance and build quality is improving, faster wear and tear during the early ownership period leads to several concerns in consumers’ minds, such as performance degradation, increased vibrations, braking inefficiencies and component durability,”
That observation reinforces a practical distinction: a promising model-level signal is a starting point, while the specific motorcycle’s service and inspection history determine much of what a buyer can assess about its present condition.
