The list follows a Harley-focused editorial selection published by HDForums on August 4, 2026; “underrated” here is an opinion about historical interest and lineup role, not an objective ranking.
What “underrated” means in this list
A motorcycle can be overlooked for several reasons: a more famous model may dominate attention, its role in the lineup may be less obvious, or its historical significance may be easier to miss. Those are useful ways to frame this list, but they do not establish that a bike was unpopular, undervalued, unusually reliable, or a better buy than its peers. The available evidence does not provide comparable sales, resale, reliability, or performance data for these ten models.
The models also span different years and types of motorcycle. Their inclusion is not a claim that they suit the same rider or serve the same purpose. Treat this as a set of historical leads, not a buying ranking or inspection guide.
10 Harley-Davidson bikes that deserve a closer look
1. XR1200
The XR1200 earns its place here as a distinct model on the HDForums list. The available sources do not establish its specifications, performance, or market reception, so its case in this article is simply that it represents a less routinely discussed entry in Harley-Davidson’s range—not that it outperformed another model or was overlooked by buyers.

2. FXDX Super Glide Sport
The FXDX belongs to the Dyna family, a broader group with multiple variants. Harley-Davidson dates the Dyna era from 1991 to 2017 and traces its roots to the 1971 FX Super Glide. The company says the family officially began with the 1991 FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis. That longer lineage makes the FXDX interesting as one example of a retired family, rather than a stand-in for every Dyna.
3. Road King Custom (FLHRS)
The FLHRS designation matters: it identifies the Road King Custom, distinguishing it from other Road King versions. Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide is useful for decoding names like this, but the available sources do not establish the Custom’s specific equipment or model years. For historical research or parts searches, confirm the exact year and variant rather than assuming that details from another Road King apply.
Rank #2
- 2014 Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 Motorcycle Model 1/12 by Maisto 32326
4. V-Rod Muscle
The V-Rod Muscle is another selection from the HDForums list. The sources available here do not substantiate its particular engineering, styling details, or model-specific differences from other V-Rod variants. Its inclusion is therefore a prompt to consider a model outside the more familiar names in Harley-Davidson’s lineup, not a claim about how it rides or what it is worth today.
5. Heritage Softail Classic
The Heritage Softail Classic is on the list, but its appeal needs to be considered in the context of the particular model year. The evidence available here does not support a detailed feature list or a single description that applies across the model’s history. Anyone researching one should start with year-specific material rather than treating the name as a complete specification.

6. Street Rod (2006–2007)
The HDForums list specifies the 2006–2007 Street Rod. That year range is important because model names can cover different versions over time. The sources available here do not establish the Street Rod’s mechanical details or riding character, so this entry is best read as a narrowly identified model-year selection rather than a broader statement about Harley-Davidson Street models.
7. Dyna Switchback (FLD)
Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide identifies the FLD as the Dyna Switchback. Its Dyna connection places it within the family the company dates to 1991–2017, but that shared family name does not make the Switchback interchangeable with other Dyna variants. Verify year-specific parts fitment and specifications before using another model’s information as a substitute.

8. Night Rod Special
The Night Rod Special appears separately from the V-Rod Muscle on the HDForums list, and it should remain a distinct entry. The available sources do not establish the differences between the two models, so it would be misleading to invent a side-by-side comparison. Its place here reflects the editorial selection, not a verified claim that it was less popular or more capable than the Muscle.
9. SuperLow
The SuperLow is included in the source list, but the materials available here do not substantiate detailed specifications or positioning. That makes it a reminder that a model’s name alone is not enough to judge its intended use. Look for documentation for the exact year before drawing conclusions about fit, equipment, or suitability for a particular rider.

10. Electra Glide Standard
The Electra Glide Standard belongs to a model line with a long touring history. Harley-Davidson’s H.O.G. archive covers the Electra Glide lineage and touring developments broadly, but that history does not establish the equipment of every Standard version. Check the specific year and trim before attributing features to a particular motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson describes the Dyna family as a cornerstone of its cruising models for 26 years, from its introduction in 1991 until its retirement in 2017. The company traces the family’s lineage to the 1971 FX Super Glide and identifies the 1991 FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis as its official beginning. This is useful context for the FXDX and Switchback: they belong to a family with a defined place in the company’s history, not a current Harley-Davidson family name.
The company also contrasts Dyna models’ traditional twin rear shocks with the hidden monoshock used in its 2018 Softail redesign. That records a change in design, not proof that one suspension arrangement is universally better. The Dyna’s retirement helps explain why these models now need to be researched as used, year-specific motorcycles, but it does not establish their present-day prices or parts availability.
How to research one of these motorcycles
- Pin down the exact model year and designation. Names and codes can distinguish variants; Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide identifies FLD as Dyna Switchback and FLHRS as Road King Custom.
- Use year-specific documentation. Look for the relevant owner’s manual, parts information, or period model material before relying on descriptions of another year or trim.
- Check the individual motorcycle’s history and condition. Maintenance records, modifications, and an inspection are separate questions from whether the model is historically interesting.
- Confirm parts fitment for the exact year and variant. Shared family names do not establish that parts fit across models.
- Match the bike to the intended use. Touring history, model designation, or inclusion on an editorial list alone cannot establish comfort, performance, or suitability for an individual rider.
For broader historical reading, Quarto/Motorbooks’ 2021 catalog describes The Harley-Davidson Source Book as covering the company’s history, specifications, and model evolution. The catalog description is a guide to the book’s scope, not confirmation of current availability or price.
