The best used Volvos are usually mature, well-documented examples—not necessarily the newest or cheapest ones. For most shoppers, the strongest starting points are a 2013–2016 XC70, a 2008–2010 V70, a 2018 V60, a 2017–2018 S60, or a carefully inspected 2017–2020 XC90 when three-row space is essential.

This ranking covers approximately 2006 through 2026 model years in the U.S. market. It evaluates the likelihood of avoiding major unscheduled repairs, not whether a Volvo costs as little to maintain as a Toyota or Honda. Every used Volvo still needs a VIN-specific recall check, complete service records, a cold-start inspection, and a professional pre-purchase inspection.

What “reliable” means for a Volvo

Volvo reliability is best understood in relative terms. RepairPal’s brand-level data reports an average annual repair cost of $769, about 0.5 repair-shop visits per year, and a 9% chance that a repair is severe. That is useful context: even a relatively dependable Volvo can cost more to repair than a mainstream Japanese sedan or crossover.

For this list, “reliable” means a comparatively strong likelihood of avoiding major unscheduled repairs within the relevant Volvo lineup. It does not mean inexpensive parts, low labor rates, or immunity from age-related failures.

  • CUSTOM FIT: Floor mats are precisely crafted using 3D printing technology for a perfect fit, compatible with Volvo XC90 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026. XC90 Floor mats Custom set includes Front & 2nd Row. NOTE: ONLY fit for Gas 7 Bench Sests. NOT fit for Hybrid 2016-2019 or Recharge 2021-2026.
  • ALL-WEATHER PROTECTION: The floor mat features raised edges on all sides to prevent curling and effectively guard against dirt, salt, rain, snow, and extreme temperatures, keeping your vehicle’s interior clean and well-protected.
  • ANTI-SLIP DESIGN: The floor mat features secure fastening clips to keep it firmly in place, while the textured surface enhances grip for added safety.
  • EASY TO CLEAN & MAINTAIN: Effortless to clean—simply wipe with a damp cloth or rinse with water to easily remove dirt and stains, ensuring hassle-free maintenance.
  • PREMIUM TPE MATERIAL: Made from recyclable, non-toxic, and odorless TPE material, the floor mat is highly durable and resistant to extreme heat and cold, ensuring long-lasting use without deformation or damage.

The evidence also has limitations. RepairPal’s model ratings combine repair cost, frequency, and severity. Consumer Reports relies primarily on owner surveys, and it warns that some model years have too few responses for statistically confident conclusions. CarComplaints is useful for identifying recurring complaint patterns, but complaint counts are not the same as failure rates: a high-volume model may generate more complaints than a low-volume model even if its underlying failure rate is similar.

That is why the list favors mature generations, better-supported model years, conventional gasoline powertrains where simplicity matters, and vehicles with completed recall work. A clean service history can make a supposedly less desirable year a better purchase than a neglected example of a “reliable” year.

The 10 most reliable Volvo models and years

Rank Model and preferred years Best fit Main buying concern
1 XC70, 2013–2016 Family wagon, winter vehicle, highway commuter Age-related repairs, AWD service, suspension, and recall history
2 V70, 2008–2010 Practical, relatively affordable used wagon Transmission behavior, electrical faults, and neglected maintenance
3 S80, 2011–2015 Quiet long-distance luxury sedan Expensive suspension, electronics, AWD, and cooling-system work
4 V60, especially 2018 Compact premium wagon with modern safety equipment Oil consumption, software issues, leaks, and powertrain-specific service
5 S60, 2017–2018 Compact luxury sedan Engine-specific oil-consumption concerns and electronics
6 XC60, 2013–2015 Manageable-size family crossover Oil consumption, fuel-pump history, AWD, leaks, and electronics
7 XC90, 2017–2020 Premium three-row SUV Complex electronics, software, suspension, and high repair costs
8 S90, 2017–2020 Comfortable luxury sedan SPA-era software, infotainment, and twin-charged powertrain complexity
9 V90 Cross Country, 2017–2020 Premium wagon and all-weather travel Limited evidence, low sales volume, software, and AWD costs
10 C30, 2012–2014 Compact commuter or enthusiast-owned second car Small evidence base, age, trim-specific parts, and limited rear-seat space

1. 2013–2016 Volvo XC70

The final-generation XC70 is the strongest all-around reliability candidate here. It combines a mature platform with a conventional raised-wagon layout, and later production years benefited from the manufacturer having had time to address earlier bugs. Consumer Reports describes the XC70 as a raised wagon related to the S80 and identifies 2011 as a redesign year; its 2016 example received an approximately average reliability assessment.

For a used buyer, the preferred configurations are a well-maintained T5 or 3.2. The exact engine and drivetrain still matter, so do not treat every XC70 from this range as mechanically identical.

Inspect carefully: timing-belt or accessory-drive history where applicable, transmission operation, AWD service, suspension bushings and shocks, cooling-system components, turbocharger-related maintenance, and electrical faults. Several Volvo models from roughly 2008–2016 also have historical recall campaigns, so recall completion must be confirmed by VIN rather than assumed from the model year.

Best use: a durable family wagon, winter vehicle, or long-distance commuter for a buyer who wants more cargo flexibility than a sedan without moving to a large SUV.

2. 2008–2010 Volvo V70

The V70 is one of Volvo’s more established long-roof models from this period and can provide substantial practicality for relatively little purchase money. RepairPal reports an average annual repair cost of approximately $644 for the V70, lower than its brand-wide Volvo figure.

That number should not be read as a guarantee. Complaint data identifies transmission-shifting and loss-of-operation concerns, and the oldest examples are now more than 15 years old. A documented, cared-for V70 is a better target than a lower-mileage car with missing records.

Inspect carefully: delayed or harsh shifts, transmission-fluid service history, cooling-system components, electrical faults, oil leaks, suspension wear, timing-belt records where applicable, and evidence of unresolved warning lights. The model has a substantial historical recall footprint, making a VIN-specific recall search mandatory.

Best use: an inexpensive used wagon for a practical buyer who is willing to prioritize service history over options, color, or odometer reading.

3. 2011–2015 Volvo S80

The second-generation S80 was a mature luxury sedan by this period and shares important architecture with the XC70. It is a good candidate for buyers who want a quiet, comfortable highway car rather than a crossover. The later years are preferable because they are further removed from the platform’s earlier production issues.

When long-term mechanical simplicity is the priority, a naturally aspirated six-cylinder configuration is the more conservative editorial choice than a highly complex turbocharged variant. Powertrain availability varies by year and market, so verify the actual engine by VIN and service documentation.

Consumer Reports lists five NHTSA recalls for its 2010 S80 example and notes that detailed reliability information may be unavailable for model years with low survey response counts. That combination illustrates why a low complaint count alone should not be treated as proof of exceptional reliability.

Inspect carefully: suspension and steering components, AWD hardware if equipped, cooling-system repairs, electronic modules, climate-control operation, oil leaks, and every recall campaign attached to the vehicle’s VIN.

Best use: comfortable long-distance transportation when the buyer values seating comfort and highway refinement more than low-cost ownership.

4. 2018 Volvo V60

The 2018 V60 is the clearest year-specific standout among the compact wagons covered by the available research. Consumer Reports rated it more reliable than other cars from the 2018 model year. The 2015–2018 V60 generation used a mature S60-related platform and included different four-cylinder and older five-cylinder powertrains depending on trim and drivetrain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every 2015–2018 V60 has the same risk profile. Owner reports for 2016 include oil-consumption and software-related complaints, and several V60 years were affected by recall campaigns, including a front-seat-belt-anchor campaign.

Inspect carefully: oil level and oil-consumption history, evidence of engine or software campaigns, sunroof-drain leaks, infotainment and climate functions, automatic-transmission behavior, and the precise engine/transmission combination.

Best use: a compact premium wagon for buyers who want modern safety technology and more manageable dimensions than an XC70 or V90.

5. 2017–2018 Volvo S60

The 2017 S60 received an approximately average Consumer Reports reliability assessment for its model year, and its complaint profile is materially less concerning than the 2012 S60. It is a reasonable sedan alternative to the V60, particularly because used-market availability is broader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Engine selection and maintenance records matter more than the S60 badge. Some earlier four-cylinder engines and certain five-cylinder cars have reported oil-consumption concerns. The 2015–2016 S60 also has reports of excessive oil consumption, so buyers should ask directly whether the engine needed topping up between oil changes and whether any warranty or campaign repair was performed.

CarComplaints identifies 2012 as the S60’s worst complaint year, with reports involving excessive oil consumption and sudden engine failure. That does not make every 2012 S60 defective, but it does make that year a poor choice when similarly priced alternatives are available.

6. 2013–2015 Volvo XC60

The first-generation XC60 can be a useful middle ground between the wagon practicality of an XC70 and the larger, newer XC90. Its reliability is more uneven than the ranking position might suggest, so the recommendation is specifically for well-maintained 2013–2015 examples with complete records.

Consumer Reports rates the 2012 XC60 below other vehicles from that model year, while the 2016 XC60 is also rated below average and has owner reports involving excessive oil consumption. CarComplaints identifies 2010 as the XC60 year with the most complaints, but rates 2019 worse after accounting for repair cost and mileage factors. Those findings are not perfectly interchangeable, which is why the practical advice is to focus on condition and avoid assuming that one aggregate ranking tells the entire story.

Inspect carefully: fuel-pump history, oil consumption, sunroof-drain and water-ingress problems, AWD service, transmission behavior, electronic systems, and the exact engine/transmission combination. A professional inspection is especially valuable on this model.

Best use: a family crossover that is easier to maneuver and generally less imposing than an XC90.

7. 2017–2020 Volvo XC90

The second-generation XC90 is substantially more modern than the first generation, but it is also far more complex. The preferred range begins with 2017 because the 2016 launch year had a particularly poor reputation in the available complaint data.

CarComplaints identifies the 2016 XC90 as Volvo’s worst model year in its database, with reports involving loss of power and expensive repairs. RepairPal gives the all-year XC90 a 3.5-out-of-5 reliability rating, approximately $851 in average annual repair costs, and 0.6 unscheduled shop visits per year.

Later XC90s can be reasonable luxury three-row SUVs, but they should not be mistaken for inexpensive family transportation. Recharge plug-in-hybrid versions add another layer of inspection: verify hybrid-system condition, charging operation, battery-related warnings, and completed software or safety campaigns.

Inspect carefully: software-update and campaign history, infotainment and driver-assistance operation, air suspension if equipped, climate-control systems, turbocharged or twin-charged engine behavior, AWD operation, and every stored diagnostic code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: a premium three-row SUV for buyers who prioritize safety, space, and comfort and have budgeted for premium-car labor and parts.

8. 2017–2020 Volvo S90

The S90 belongs to Volvo’s SPA-era technology family, broadly related to the second-generation XC90. Its later model years are preferable to the first launch period, but the car should be approached as a complex luxury sedan—not as a simple, low-cost commuter.

Turbocharged and twin-charged engines, electronic modules, infotainment, and driver-assistance systems can require dealer-level diagnostics. Current and recent Volvo vehicles have also generated software and infotainment complaints, so a vehicle with documented dealer updates is more attractive than one with an uncertain campaign history.

Inspect carefully: infotainment reboots, navigation and camera operation, driver-assistance warnings, climate controls, suspension noises, oil leaks, transmission behavior, software updates, and the complete recall record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: comfortable long-distance luxury transportation for a buyer who accepts higher repair complexity in exchange for modern design and equipment.

9. 2017–2020 Volvo V90 Cross Country

The V90 Cross Country delivers wagon utility with SPA-era technology and is a niche alternative to the XC90. It can make sense for someone who wants cargo space and all-weather capability without the driving position and bulk of a three-row SUV.

Later production years should generally receive preference over the earliest examples because new, complicated platforms tend to carry greater launch risk. However, the V90 Cross Country does not have the same depth of year-specific reliability evidence as the XC70, V70, or S60. Its lower complaint volume may partly reflect lower sales volume rather than exceptional dependability, so confidence in this ranking is moderate.

Inspect carefully: AWD operation, electronic and infotainment systems, suspension, driver-assistance features, software campaigns, tire wear, and the cost and availability of model-specific parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: premium wagon utility and all-weather travel for a buyer who specifically prefers wagon dynamics to a tall SUV.

10. 2012–2014 Volvo C30

The C30 is an appealing compact hatchback and has relatively limited system complexity compared with larger, newer Volvo vehicles. Its small size and simpler mission help it earn a place on this list, but the evidence base is thin because the model sold in much smaller numbers.

The best C30 is a stock, regularly serviced example with a clean electrical system and strong documentation. Modified cars, neglected cars, and examples with missing trim or unusual parts can be difficult to evaluate and more difficult to restore economically.

Inspect carefully: cold-start behavior, warning lights, electrical accessories, suspension, cooling system, clutch or automatic transmission operation, rust or water intrusion, and the availability of trim-specific parts.

Volvo years and versions to approach carefully

These are not automatic “never buy” years. They are years where the available evidence justifies a higher inspection standard, a lower purchase price, or choosing a different example altogether.

Model or period Why caution is warranted What to verify
2016 XC90 CarComplaints identifies it as the worst XC90 year and Volvo model year in its database; reports include loss of power and expensive repairs. Software and campaign history, drivetrain operation, electronics, and all stored codes
2012 S60 Identified as the S60’s worst complaint year, with excessive-oil-consumption and sudden-engine-failure reports. Oil consumption, cold start, engine history, and independent inspection
2015–2016 S60 Reports include excessive oil consumption, particularly on certain engines. Oil level between services, engine documentation, and any repair or warranty history
2010 and 2012 XC60 Unfavorable complaint or Consumer Reports signals, including fuel-pump and below-average reliability concerns. Fuel-system history, warning lights, and maintenance records
2016 XC60 and V60 Owner reports include excessive oil consumption and major-engine concerns. Oil-consumption history and evidence of campaign or warranty work
2019 XC60 CarComplaints rates it as the worst XC60 year after considering repair cost and mileage factors; sunroof leaks and engine-oil concerns appear in reported problems. Water intrusion, oil consumption, engine condition, and repair estimates
Early SPA-era vehicles Launch-period XC90, S90, and related vehicles can have greater software and electronics risk. Dealer updates, safety campaigns, infotainment, cameras, sensors, and driver-assistance systems

How to buy a reliable used Volvo

  1. Run the VIN through official recall databases. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall search and Volvo’s own recall system where available. Recall status is vehicle-specific; it cannot be inferred from the model name or a seller’s statement that the vehicle is “fully serviced.”
  2. Demand service records before negotiating. Look for timing-belt or accessory-drive work where applicable, transmission-fluid service, AWD or angle-gear service, cooling-system repairs, oil-consumption repairs, and documented software or campaign updates. A vehicle with invoices is easier to evaluate than one with only a verbal maintenance history.
  3. Obtain a vehicle-history report, but do not treat it as an inspection. A vehicle history report can add ownership, title, mileage, accident, and registration context. It may not show every repair, flood event, or independent-shop visit, so it complements rather than replaces a mechanical inspection.
  4. Perform a genuine cold start. Ask the seller not to warm the vehicle before arrival. Listen for abnormal rattles, watch for smoke, verify that warning lights illuminate briefly and then go out, and note rough idle, delayed engagement, or unusual vibration.
  5. Scan for stored and pending diagnostic codes. An OBD2 scanner for Volvo can reveal stored or pending faults before a purchase, but a consumer scanner does not replace professional Volvo-capable diagnostics. Some manufacturer-specific systems and intermittent faults require more advanced equipment.
  6. Check oil consumption directly. Confirm the oil level on a level surface and ask whether the owner must add oil between changes. Excessive consumption is a recurring concern in some S60, V60, and XC60 years, so vague answers deserve caution.
  7. Test every electronic feature. Operate the climate system, heated seats, windows, locks, cameras, parking sensors, infotainment, navigation, instrument displays, driver-assistance features, and all warning-light functions. Electronics can be expensive even when the underlying engine and transmission are sound.
  8. Look for water intrusion. Inspect the headliner, carpets, spare-tire well, door panels, and cargo area for dampness or staining. Pay particular attention to sunroof drains on models for which leaks have been reported.
  9. Inspect tires, suspension, and AWD components. Uneven tire wear can indicate alignment or suspension problems. During a road test, listen for wheel-bearing, driveline, angle-gear, and suspension noises. Confirm that all four tires are properly matched on AWD vehicles.
  10. Have a Volvo specialist inspect the car. A pre-purchase inspection by an independent Volvo specialist is particularly worthwhile for an XC90, S90, V90 Cross Country, or older turbocharged Volvo. The inspection should include a lift inspection, scan-tool report, fluid checks, underbody review, and an estimate of near-term maintenance.
  11. Budget for premium-car ownership. A low purchase price does not turn Volvo parts, labor, diagnostics, or electronic modules into economy-car expenses. Keep a repair reserve, especially for older vehicles and complex SPA-era models.
  12. Prefer documented maturity over neglected youth. A well-maintained 2013 XC70 or 2018 V60 is usually a more rational purchase than a newer Volvo with missing records, unresolved warning lights, or an uncertain accident history.

Useful ownership preparation

Once you have confirmed the exact model year, engine, and drivetrain, a Volvo repair manual matched to that configuration can help an owner understand service procedures, inspection points, and component locations. It should support—not replace—the factory service information and professional advice for safety-critical or high-voltage work.

For older or infrequently driven Volvos, a 12V car battery maintainer can be a sensible ownership accessory. It may help maintain battery charge during storage, but it does not improve a model’s inherent reliability and should never be used as an explanation for repeated electrical faults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For routine maintenance, a model-specific cabin air filter or timing-belt service kit must be matched to the exact year, engine code, and VIN. Not every Volvo engine uses a timing belt, and incorrect parts can create more trouble than they prevent. A cabin filter is generally a simpler DIY item; timing-belt work should be handled by someone with the correct procedure and tools.

Best reliable Volvo by buyer type

  • Best overall wagon: 2013–2016 XC70, preferably a documented T5 or 3.2.
  • Best lower-cost practical wagon: 2008–2010 V70, provided the transmission and maintenance history are strong.
  • Best newer compact wagon: 2018 V60, with engine-specific oil-consumption checks.
  • Best sedan: 2017–2018 S60, after verifying the engine and oil history.
  • Best family crossover: 2013–2015 XC60, subject to a particularly careful inspection.
  • Best three-row Volvo: 2017–2020 XC90, avoiding the 2016 launch year unless its documentation is exceptional.
  • Best small, distinctive option: 2012–2014 C30, mainly for buyers comfortable with limited practicality and a thin reliability evidence base.

Why newer Volvos are not automatically higher on this list

The research window extends through 2026, but this is not a claim that every 2021–2026 Volvo is unreliable. Newer vehicles simply have less long-term repair history, and many use more software, sensors, electronic modules, turbocharged engines, and hybrid hardware than older Volvos. That makes early reliability conclusions less certain and increases the importance of warranty coverage, recall completion, software updates, and dealer service history.

Similarly, the ranking does not say that every older Volvo is simple or cheap. The V70 and XC70 can need age-related suspension, cooling, electrical, and driveline repairs. The S80 can have expensive luxury-car components. The C30 may have parts-availability challenges. “Reliable” identifies the better starting point; it does not eliminate the need to inspect the individual car.

Sources and evidence limits

The ranking draws on model and brand-level information from RepairPal, owner-survey reliability assessments and reliability caveats from Consumer Reports, complaint patterns from CarComplaints, and recall information associated with NHTSA and Volvo. These sources measure different things. Repair cost is not the same as failure frequency, owner complaints are not a controlled failure-rate study, and a low number of reports may reflect low sales volume or limited survey responses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why the final decision should be based on the specific vehicle’s VIN, engine, drivetrain, mileage, maintenance records, inspection results, and outstanding campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Volvos reliable cars?

Some Volvo generations and model years are comparatively dependable, but Volvo ownership is usually more expensive than mainstream-brand ownership. RepairPal reports an average annual Volvo repair cost of $769 and a 9% probability that a repair is severe. Reliability is highly dependent on model year, engine, drivetrain, maintenance, and the condition of the individual car.

What is the safest used Volvo to buy for reliability?

For an all-around wagon, start with a well-maintained 2013–2016 XC70. For a newer compact wagon, the 2018 V60 is the clearest year-specific standout in the available evidence. Sedan buyers should consider a carefully inspected 2017–2018 S60, while buyers needing three rows should look at documented 2017–2020 XC90s and generally avoid the 2016 launch year.

Which Volvo years should I be most cautious about?

The main caution years are the 2016 XC90, 2012 S60, 2015–2016 S60, 2010 and 2012 XC60, 2016 XC60 and V60, and 2019 XC60. Early SPA-era Volvo vehicles, including the first-year XC90 and related S90-era cars, also deserve close scrutiny for software and electronic issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an older Volvo better than a newer Volvo?

Not automatically. A mature older platform can have fewer launch-related problems, but age brings suspension, cooling-system, electrical, and driveline wear. A newer Volvo may offer better safety and technology but more software, sensor, hybrid, and electronic complexity. The best choice is the vehicle with the stronger records and inspection results.

What should I check before buying a used Volvo?

Run the VIN through recall databases, review maintenance invoices, perform a cold start, scan for stored and pending codes, check oil consumption, test every electronic and driver-assistance feature, inspect for water leaks and uneven tire wear, verify AWD service where applicable, and obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a Volvo-qualified specialist.

The Bottom Line

The most reliable Volvo is usually a mature, well-maintained example with a documented history. Start with the 2013–2016 XC70 or 2008–2010 V70 for wagon practicality, the 2018 V60 for a newer compact wagon, the 2017–2018 S60 for a sedan, or the 2017–2020 XC90 when three-row space is non-negotiable. Then verify the VIN, engine, recall status, oil history, electronics, AWD system, and near-term repair budget before buying.
