10 Most Reliable Toyota Models of the 2020s So Far

Recent dependability studies repeatedly recognize the Corolla, Camry, Tacoma and 4Runner, but their three-year-old vehicle cohorts do not establish a definitive top ten for every Toyota of the 2020s.

Recent U.S. dependability-study awards repeatedly recognize the Toyota Corolla, Camry, Tacoma and 4Runner; the Sienna also won in the two latest studies. Those results support a useful shortlist, but not a statistically precise ranking of Toyota’s ten most reliable models. The awards are segment-based, and the newest study measures 2023 vehicles after three years of ownership—not today’s redesigned models.

How this Toyota reliability shortlist was selected

This list draws on J.D. Power’s 2024, 2025 and 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Studies (VDS). Each surveyed original owners of vehicles that were three model years old. The latest study, published February 12, 2026, surveyed 33,268 owners of 2023-model-year vehicles; fieldwork ran from December 2024 through November 2025. It examines 184 problems across nine categories, including powertrain, infotainment, climate, interior and driving assistance. J.D. Power’s 2026 study names segment award recipients rather than publishing a comprehensive Toyota-only ranking.

To make “10” useful without implying a ranking the data do not establish, the list below includes Toyota models recognized in at least one of those three studies. Four—Corolla, Camry, Tacoma and 4Runner—appear in all three award releases. Sienna appears in the 2025 and 2026 studies; RAV4 and Tundra appear in one each. Lexus is part of Toyota Motor Corporation, but is a separate brand, so Lexus award winners are not counted as Toyota models here.

Model Vehicle type Recent VDS award evidence What that evidence covers
Toyota Corolla Compact car Named in 2024, 2025 and 2026 Segment award recognition in each study; the studies cover 2021, 2022 and 2023 model-year vehicles, respectively.
Toyota Camry Midsize car Named in 2024, 2025 and 2026 Segment award recognition in each study; the studies cover 2021, 2022 and 2023 model-year vehicles, respectively.
Toyota Tacoma Midsize pickup Named in 2024, 2025 and 2026 Segment award recognition in each study; the studies cover 2021, 2022 and 2023 model-year vehicles, respectively.
Toyota 4Runner Midsize SUV Named in 2024 and 2026 Segment award recognition in those studies; they cover 2021 and 2023 model-year vehicles.
Toyota Sienna Minivan Named in 2025 and 2026 Segment award recognition in those studies; they cover 2022 and 2023 model-year vehicles.
Toyota RAV4 Compact SUV Named in 2025 Segment award recognition in the study of 2022 model-year vehicles.
Toyota Tundra Full-size pickup Named in 2024 Segment award recognition in the study of 2021 model-year vehicles.
Toyota Avalon Full-size car Top overall model in 2025 A separate distinction in the study of 2022 model-year vehicles, not one of that year’s six Toyota model-level segment awards.
Toyota model not established by this evidence — No ninth distinct Toyota nameplate established The cited releases do not support two additional distinct Toyota models to complete a ten-nameplate list.
Toyota model not established by this evidence — No tenth distinct Toyota nameplate established The cited releases do not support two additional distinct Toyota models to complete a ten-nameplate list.

The releases list Toyota award recipients, not every model in the study or their exact within-segment scores. Thus, the evidence supports seven distinct Toyota nameplates with a reported distinction across the three releases, plus the Avalon’s separate overall-model distinction. It does not support inventing three more award-backed models or ranking these ten positions by reliability.

The Toyota models with repeated recognition

Toyota Corolla

The Corolla is the most consistently recognized Toyota nameplate in these releases: it appears in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 VDS award lists. That is strong evidence of repeated segment-level recognition across three successive study cohorts, not proof that every Corolla year, trim or powertrain is equally trouble-free. Consumer Reports’ accessible reliability pages also illustrate why model-year detail matters: it described the 2020 Corolla as more reliable than other 2020 cars. Consumer Reports’ 2020 Corolla reliability page describes its own prediction as based on past model performance and subscriber surveys across 20 potential trouble spots.

Toyota Camry

The Camry appears in all three recent VDS award lists, spanning vehicles from model years 2021 through 2023. In the 2025 study, Toyota Avalon—not the Camry—was the top overall model; that overall distinction is separate from the Camry’s segment award. These results are useful for evaluating the sampled generations, but they are not a promise about a newer redesign.

Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma also recurs in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 lists. The cohort years are 2021, 2022 and 2023, so this record should not automatically be projected onto later model years. Consumer Reports described the accessible 2020 Tacoma reliability result as about average for its model year, a reminder that a strong brand reputation does not substitute for checking the particular year. Consumer Reports’ 2020 Tacoma reliability page.

Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner was recognized in the 2024 and 2026 studies, but does not appear in the 2025 Toyota award list. Its recurrence is encouraging, though not as continuous as the Corolla, Camry and Tacoma. The studied vehicles were from model years 2021 and 2023; these results should be treated as evidence about those cohorts, not every version across the decade.

Other Toyota nameplates with recent study recognition

Toyota Sienna

The Sienna appears in both the 2025 and 2026 VDS award lists, for the 2022- and 2023-model-year cohorts. That gives it repeat recognition in the two newest releases. The studies do not establish a separate reliability ranking by Sienna powertrain or trim.

Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 appears in the 2025 Toyota award list, based on 2022-model-year vehicles. It is a one-study recognition in the evidence summarized here, rather than a recurring result across all three releases.

Toyota Tundra

The Tundra appears in the 2024 award list, which covered 2021-model-year vehicles. The available releases summarized here do not show it recurring in the subsequent 2025 or 2026 Toyota lists.

Toyota Avalon

The Avalon was the top overall model in the 2025 study, which evaluated 2022-model-year vehicles. This is a distinct overall-study result, not one of the six Toyota segment award recipients in that release. It is relevant historical evidence, but does not make the Avalon a recurring award winner in the three-release window.

What the VDS results can—and cannot—tell you

J.D. Power’s VDS measures problems reported by original owners after three years, so it offers a retrospective view of early ownership rather than a forecast for a newly sold vehicle. The three releases cover 2021, 2022 and 2023 model-year vehicles, respectively. A newer generation or powertrain may not be represented by the older cohort that won recognition.

The 2026 study’s industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); a lower score indicates fewer reported problems. That is an industry figure, not a Toyota model score. The study found infotainment to be its most problematic category at 56.7 PP100, followed by exterior at 27.5 PP100. Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity was the leading individual problem, at 8.9 PP100, for the third consecutive year. The results therefore capture ownership issues beyond major mechanical failures.

J.D. Power’s 2026 industry averages by powertrain were 198 PP100 for gas vehicles, 213 for hybrids, 237 for battery-electric vehicles and 281 for plug-in hybrids. These are averages across the industry, not Toyota-specific results. They cannot establish that one Toyota model or powertrain is more reliable than another. Nor do they mean a particular Toyota will experience that number of problems: PP100 is a study-level rate, not an individual vehicle prediction. See the 2026 VDS release for the study’s scope and findings.

Why the study year matters when choosing a Toyota

Recognition can change as the sampled model year changes. The 2024 study surveyed 30,595 original owners of 2021 vehicles after three years of ownership, with fieldwork from August through November 2023. Toyota ranked highest among mass-market brands at 147 PP100. The 2024 release lists 4Runner, Camry, Corolla, Tacoma and Tundra among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model award recipients.

The 2025 study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 vehicles after three years of ownership, with fieldwork from August through November 2024. Toyota ranked third among mass-market brands at 162 PP100, while the company had six model-level awards, tied with General Motors for the most. Its Toyota recipients were Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Sienna and Tacoma; the sixth recipient was Lexus GX. The 2025 release also identifies the Avalon as the top overall model, a separate distinction.

The 2026 study’s 2023-model-year cohort represents a different group of owners and vehicles. Toyota’s model-level recipients were Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, Sienna and 4Runner; the full Toyota Motor Corporation list also included Lexus IS, UX and GX. Toyota brand PP100 is not supplied in the 2026 release summary used here, so it should not be inferred from the industry average or from the segment awards.

How to use this list when shopping

  1. Start with the exact model year. Match any reliability claim to the year and generation you are considering; the cited VDS results reflect 2021–2023 vehicles, not every 2020s Toyota.
  2. Treat repeat recognition as a screening signal. Corolla, Camry and Tacoma appear in each of the three award releases; 4Runner appears twice. This is a useful way to narrow research, not a numbered prediction of which used vehicle will last longest.
  3. Check the particular vehicle’s history and condition. A segment award describes aggregate owner reports, not an individual car’s maintenance, prior damage or current mechanical condition.
  4. Do not infer a powertrain winner from industry averages. The 2026 gas, hybrid, EV and plug-in hybrid averages combine brands and models, so they do not settle a Toyota-specific comparison.

The evidence available here does not establish a reliable year-by-year buying recommendation or a complete ten-model ranking. It supports comparing the precise year and configuration you are considering, rather than relying on a nameplate or brand reputation alone.
