Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Several 1990–93 cars earned a place on Consumer Reports’ 1995 list of reliable used-car choices, based on owner surveys and testing. The ten picks below are a historically grounded shortlist—not a promise that a three-decade-old example is still dependable, safe, or inexpensive to repair. Today, maintenance records, rust, storage history, parts access, and open recalls can matter more than a model’s old reputation.
How the shortlist was chosen
In 1995, the Los Angeles Times summarized Consumer Reports’ list of ten reliable used cars priced at $10,000 or less. The report drew on owner reports covering 580,000 cars and light trucks and described the selections as based on owner surveys and testing. The price ceiling reflects the market in 1995; it says nothing about what these cars cost today. Los Angeles Times, March 21, 1995.
The source does not give a head-to-head score or detailed engine-by-engine failure histories for these ten. The years below are the specific models named in that list; they are not a claim that every trim or surviving example is equally reliable.

-
1991 Acura Integra
The Integra was one of the ten affordable used-car picks. For a present-day example, review maintenance documentation and inspect the body and underside for corrosion or prior repairs.

1992 Geo Prizm
The 1992 Prizm appeared on the same list. Before buying, check the specific car’s service history and whether local parts and repair support suit your needs.
-
1990 Honda Accord
The Accord made the ten-car list. A model reputation cannot establish an individual car’s condition: examine its records and have a qualified independent mechanic assess it before purchase.
-
1992 Honda Civic
Consumer Reports’ 1995 used-car summary named the 1992 Civic. Verify the vehicle’s history, structural condition, and safety equipment rather than assuming age or nameplate tells the whole story.

1991 Mitsubishi Galant
The 1991 Galant was included among the ten. Confirm that the car has been maintained and that parts and qualified service are accessible where you live.

1990 Nissan Maxima, automatic transmission
The period pick specifically identifies an automatic-transmission 1990 Maxima. Preserve that qualification when comparing cars; the cited summary does not establish the same selection for other transmissions.
-
1993 Saturn SL and SW
The selection covered 1993 Saturn SL and SW models. Check the exact body style and vehicle condition, then weigh repair complexity and parts access against your intended use.
-
1991 Toyota Camry
The 1991 Camry appeared on the list of reliable used cars. Inspect the particular car’s maintenance records and underbody, including for corrosion that could affect structural condition.
-
1992 Toyota Corolla
The 1992 Corolla was another named pick. The period listing is useful context, but it cannot substitute for an inspection of a car that has accumulated decades of wear, repairs, and storage.

1990 Volvo 240
The 1990 Volvo 240 completed the ten-car list. Assess its documented upkeep and local repair support, and do not treat its historical inclusion as evidence that a specific survivor is safe or trouble-free.
Which names appeared repeatedly in reliability lists?
The 1995 Los Angeles Times summary also counted how often models appeared in Consumer Reports’ annual top-ten lists for 1987–93. These are appearance counts, not rankings against one another or a universal reliability score. Models with insufficient data were excluded, and inclusion reflected appearances on annual top-ten or bottom-ten lists.
| Model | Appearances in annual top-ten lists, 1987–93 |
|---|---|
| Honda Accord | 6 model years |
| Nissan Maxima | 5 model years |
| Toyota Corolla | 5 model years |
| Acura Legend | 4 model years |
| Lexus LS400 | 4 model years |
| Acura Integra | 3 model years |
| Honda Prelude | 3 model years |
| Infiniti G20 | 3 model years |
| Nissan Pathfinder | 3 model years |
| Toyota Celica | 3 model years |
The counts are the summary’s reported frequency of annual-list appearances; they do not measure years of ownership or the size of a reliability advantage. Los Angeles Times, March 21, 1995.
Why period rankings do not guarantee a dependable car today
These sources describe vehicles as evaluated in their own period. They do not establish the present survival rate of 1990s cars, predict how long a particular survivor will last, or offer an apples-to-apples reliability score for every car sold from 1990 through 1999.

Other historical rankings provide context, not a direct extension of the ten-car list. A March 1996 summary of Consumer Reports’ 1995-model reliability ranking placed Acura, Infiniti, Honda, Geo, Subaru, BMW, Toyota, Mazda, Volvo, and Saturn in its first ten positions. It described Volvo and BMW as the most reliable European cars and Saturn and Geo as the strongest American brands in that survey. Its Consumer Reports choices for 1996 included the Toyota Camry as best family sedan, the Honda Civic as best inexpensive car, and the Toyota Tercel for fuel economy. These are period brand and category findings, not rankings of every 1990s model year. Los Angeles Times, March 19, 1996.
J.D. Power’s 1990 dependability page describes annual responses from more than 80,000 verified owners of three-year-old vehicles, counting problems reported during the previous 12 months. It names Buick and Lexus as the highest-rated brands for 1990, but does not show enough model-level detail to rank the cars here. J.D. Power summarizes its approach this way: “The fewer the number of problems reported by car owners, the higher the score.” J.D. Power, 1990 Dependability Awards and Ratings.
Modern longevity research should not be projected backward onto these older models. For example, iSeeCars’ 2026 study reports a 3.4% passenger-car average likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles for the current model populations it analyzed. That figure is not a survival probability for 1990s cars or for any car on this list. iSeeCars, 2026 study.

- Maintenance evidence: Look for records that show what work was done and when. A reputation is not a service history.
- Structure and underbody: Inspect for corrosion, damage, and evidence of repairs; these can matter more than a model’s historical standing.
- Parts and repair support: Confirm that parts and qualified service are available locally, and consider repair complexity and cost.
- Fit for your use: Match the car’s condition, safety equipment, and likely upkeep to whether you want a daily driver, project, or occasional classic.
- Recall status: Check the car’s VIN rather than relying on a model-level recall count. NHTSA says manufacturers issue and conduct recalls and report progress to the agency; displayed completion information can lag actual repairs and may be difficult to compare across campaigns. NHTSA, Takata Air Bag Recall Spotlight.
NHTSA warns that Takata inflators exposed over long periods to combined heat and humidity face a greater rupture risk, with exposure patterns affecting risk. Recall status is vehicle-specific, so a VIN lookup is essential. An Edmunds page for the 1990 Honda Accord lists 12 recalls, but that is a page-level count—not a current count for every Accord or an estimate of unrepaired defects. Edmunds directs users to NHTSA’s VIN lookup. Edmunds, 1990 Honda Accord.
