They are the examples with the right combination of condition, maintenance history, safety equipment, drivetrain, and price. For most families, the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot are the strongest all-around starting points. The Mazda CX-9 is the better choice for driving enjoyment, the Subaru Outback excels in winter and all-weather use, the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride offer substantial family space and features, and the Toyota 4Runner makes sense when trail capability or body-on-frame towing hardware matters more than fuel economy.
This is a researched shortlist for the U.S. used market, not a guarantee that every vehicle wearing one of these badges is a good buy. Reliability can change significantly by model year, engine, transmission, trim, build date, accident history, maintenance record, and recall status. Treat the model recommendations below as a way to narrow your search, then evaluate the exact vehicle by its VIN.

“Midsize SUV” covers a broad group of vehicles, from sporty two-row crossovers to large three-row family haulers. That range is why a buyer shopping for a comfortable commuter, a snow-capable wagon, a seven-passenger family vehicle, and a serious off-road tow rig can all begin with the same category. Edmunds’ used midsize-SUV guide highlights the category’s combination of passenger space, available third-row seating, all-wheel drive, towing capability, and modern driver-assistance features.

1. Toyota Highlander
Best for: buyers who want a dependable, family-friendly three-row SUV with available hybrid efficiency and strong resale demand.
The Highlander is the broadest recommendation in this group because it balances family usability, composed road manners, fuel-conscious powertrain choices, and a long-running reputation for good reliability. Consumer Reports describes the Highlander as functional and family-friendly, with frugal fuel economy and consistently good reliability.
For a used search, 2017–2022 examples are a sensible starting range. Look for complete service records and compare gas and hybrid versions according to your driving pattern. A hybrid can be appealing to a buyer who drives many miles, but the vehicle still needs a thorough inspection and a record of proper maintenance. Verify whether the second row has captain’s chairs or a bench: that detail changes both passenger capacity and how easily people reach the third row.
The Highlander also appeared on the 2022 IIHS list of midsize SUVs earning TOP SAFETY PICK. That award should make a properly equipped example attractive to safety-conscious shoppers, but it does not replace checking the exact trim, headlights, production date, and driver-assistance equipment.
Main caveat: The third row is useful, but it is not as adult-friendly as the roomiest three-row SUVs. Strong resale demand can also keep used prices high. Do not pay a Toyota premium for a neglected, poorly equipped, or accident-damaged example.
2. Honda Pilot
Best for: families that need one of the more usable third rows and a comfortable daily driver.
The Pilot combines SUV seating height with much of the practicality associated with a minivan. Depending on configuration, it can seat up to eight, and it offers a roomy third row, useful cargo capacity, and extensive interior storage. Edmunds’ evaluation of the Pilot emphasizes those family-oriented strengths, while Consumer Reports characterizes it as combining useful traits of a wagon, SUV, and minivan.
For value, begin with 2019–2022 examples that have documented transmission and fluid service. The 2023 redesign brought a newer cabin and updated technology, so 2023-and-newer vehicles may justify their higher prices when those improvements matter to you. In either case, physically test the desired second-row setup and confirm that Honda Sensing features are present on the specific trim.
During the test drive, pay attention to transmission operation, shifting behavior, suspension noise, brake vibration, and evidence of heavy family use. A Pilot with a clean history and consistent maintenance is a much better proposition than a cheaper example with unexplained service gaps.
Main caveat: Transmission behavior, infotainment features, and driver-assistance availability vary by model year and trim. “Pilot” on the liftgate is not enough information to establish what you are buying.
3. Mazda CX-9
Best for: buyers who want a stylish three-row SUV with sharper handling and a more upscale-feeling cabin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The CX-9 provides three-row utility without driving like a large truck. Consumer Reports’ coverage of the 2016–2023 CX-9 highlights its styling, engaging road manners, and responsive turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It is one of the more satisfying choices here for someone who enjoys driving but still needs occasional extra seats.
Look especially closely at 2019–2023 examples with regular oil changes and a clean inspection of the turbocharger, cooling system, and six-speed automatic transmission. The turbo engine’s performance is useful, but it makes maintenance history more important than it would be on a simpler naturally aspirated engine. Check for warning lights, coolant loss, unusual exhaust smoke, hesitation, and evidence of deferred maintenance.
The CX-9 also earned a place among the midsize SUVs on the 2022 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK list, subject to the award’s model-year and equipment conditions. That is useful context, but the individual vehicle still needs a VIN-specific recall check and an examination for crash repairs.
Main caveat: The third row is smaller than the Pilot, Palisade, or Telluride, and cargo space behind all three rows is limited. The CX-9 works best when the third row is an occasional tool rather than a daily adult seating area.

4. Subaru Outback
Best for: buyers who prioritize standard all-wheel drive, ground clearance, winter traction, and wagon-like cargo usability.
The Outback is technically a raised wagon, but it is commonly evaluated in the midsize-SUV class. That distinction matters less than its real-world advantages: a lower, easier-to-load cargo area than many traditional SUVs, standard all-wheel drive, and stable road manners. Subaru’s 2024 specifications list standard all-wheel drive and X-MODE traction management, with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine or turbocharged 2.4-liter engine depending on trim.
For a used purchase, 2018–2024 examples can make sense. Require complete CVT service records, properly matched tires, and a careful check for water intrusion. Confirm that the EyeSight driver-assistance system works on the exact trim and that there are no persistent windshield, camera, or warning-light issues. Turbocharged XT and Wilderness versions provide more power, but they may cost more to operate and may have been used harder.
The Outback appeared on the 2022 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK list. As with every safety award in this article, check the applicable model year and equipment rather than transferring the result to every used Outback.
Recommended Free Tools
Main caveat: CVT condition and maintenance history are central to the purchase decision. Standard all-wheel drive does not make a neglected Outback a good buy, and replacing tires with mismatched sizes or significantly different wear can create drivetrain concerns.
5. Hyundai Santa Fe
Best for: shoppers seeking comfort, features, and a potentially lower used price than an equivalent Toyota or Honda.
The Santa Fe is a strong value-oriented choice, particularly in later model years with modern safety and convenience features. However, this is a model that demands VIN-level research rather than a quick reputation-based purchase. Powertrains, software, recall campaigns, warranty terms, and equipment can vary substantially by year and vehicle history.
Begin with 2021–2023 examples, but pay close attention to the build date. IIHS named the Santa Fe built after July 2021 a 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK. That wording is important: not every 2021 Santa Fe automatically has the same award applicability or equipment. The IIHS award document identifies production-date and equipment conditions that used buyers must verify.

Main caveat: A low asking price can reflect uncertainty rather than value. Do not treat a Santa Fe as a bargain until the powertrain history, open campaigns, title, and warranty situation are clear.
6. Hyundai Palisade
Best for: families wanting a spacious, quiet, well-equipped three-row SUV with adult-usable seating.
The Palisade has been a leading used three-row option since its 2020 introduction. It offers seven- or eight-passenger seating depending on configuration, comfortable seats, a smooth ride, a generous interior, and standard advanced driver aids such as adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, according to Edmunds’ used-SUV coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLook at 2020–2025 examples with complete dealer or independent-shop records. Verify recall completion, check that the driver-assistance sensors function without warning messages, and inspect the tires carefully. On an all-wheel-drive vehicle, confirm that the tires are appropriate and consistently worn; a vehicle that has been fitted with unsuitable or mismatched tires deserves extra scrutiny.
Test the third row with the people and child seats you actually plan to carry. The Palisade is more convincing than many midsize SUVs when adults need to sit in the back, but seating configuration and cargo room still vary with how the second row is equipped.
The 2022 Palisade earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award. Confirm that the used example has the equipment associated with the relevant award before using that result in your buying decision.

Monitor ox- ygen sensors, fuel trims, coolant temperature, RPM, and more to spot suspicious values instantly. This obd scanner gives you professional-grade insight without the pro price tag—a feature you won’t find on basic $20 car code readers
Main caveat: The Palisade is physically large, and its handling is less agile than that of smaller alternatives. Used prices can also approach those of newer competitors, so compare equipment, condition, and remaining warranty coverage—not just age.
7. Kia Telluride
Best for: buyers seeking maximum family practicality, comfort, styling, and features for the money.
The Telluride became a major used-SUV recommendation after its 2020 introduction. It can seat seven or eight, provides comfortable seating and a composed ride, and offers substantial cargo room with the third row folded. Properly equipped examples can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Edmunds’ evaluation also notes its strong family-focused packaging and ride quality.
For a used search, start with 2020–2023 examples that have complete maintenance records and a VIN-specific recall check. Inspect for unmodified wiring and infotainment systems, healthy tires, warning lights, and evidence that towing or cargo use has not caused neglected wear. If towing is part of the plan, confirm the actual tow equipment and configuration rather than assuming every Telluride can tow the maximum figure.
IIHS included the Telluride among 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK vehicles when equipped with qualifying headlights and safety equipment. That conditional language is especially important when comparing lower and higher trims.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Main caveat: Fuel economy is not a strength, and strong demand can keep used prices elevated. A Telluride is appealing when its space and features are useful to you, not simply because it has a popular name.
8. Nissan Murano
Best for: buyers wanting a comfortable, quiet two-row SUV with easy entry and a relaxed highway character.
The Murano is a sensible alternative for shoppers who do not need a third row. Its two-row layout gives rear passengers more usable space than many compact SUVs, and its ride makes it well suited to long-distance driving. It earned a 2022 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award, and the current IIHS midsize-SUV results also show the Murano as a strong performer in the latest model-year evaluation. Do not use that current result as a substitute for checking an older vehicle’s specific model-year rating.
Focus on 2019–2023 examples with documented CVT-fluid service. During a cold and fully warmed-up test drive, watch for shuddering, hesitation, delayed engagement, abnormal noises, or warning lights. Have a technician scan for stored diagnostic trouble codes and inspect the suspension, air-conditioning system, and electronics.
Main caveat: The Murano is not the choice for frequent third-row duty, serious off-road driving, or buyers who need a dedicated towing vehicle. A vague maintenance history is a reason to move on, not a reason to negotiate harder.
9. Ford Edge
Best for: shoppers wanting a roomy two-row crossover with highway comfort and broad used-market availability.
The Edge offers a relatively spacious cabin and cargo area without the cost or complexity of a three-row SUV. It is a practical candidate for buyers who value comfortable road trips and usable cargo room more than off-road capability or maximum fuel economy. IIHS listed the Edge as a 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with qualifying headlights and front-crash-prevention equipment.
Look for 2019–2023 examples with complete service records, smooth automatic-transmission operation, no warning lights, and a functioning Ford Co-Pilot360 suite where equipped. Powertrain and trim differences are significant, especially between standard and higher-output versions, so verify the engine and equipment from the VIN or original build information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ford discontinued the Edge after the 2024 model year in the United States. That does not automatically make a used Edge a poor purchase, but it means buyers should focus on condition, parts availability, service support, and long-term ownership costs rather than expecting a new-generation replacement to affect the decision.
Main caveat: The Edge is a two-row crossover, not a family hauler with a third row. Compare its actual equipment and repair history with newer alternatives before concluding that a lower used price represents a bargain.

10. Toyota 4Runner
Best for: buyers who genuinely need body-on-frame construction, towing ability, or serious trail capability.
The 4Runner is the specialist in this list. It is less efficient and less polished on pavement than most crossover-based midsize SUVs, but its body-on-frame construction, available four-wheel drive, solid rear axle, and off-road-oriented design give it capabilities the others do not. Toyota describes the 4Runner’s rugged construction and trail capability, while its 2024 specifications list a 4.0-liter V6 and towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds when properly configured.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a used search, 2014–2024 examples can be considered. Inspect the frame and underbody for corrosion, off-road impact damage, leaking differentials, worn suspension components, and neglected transfer-case or differential service. Modifications are not automatically bad, but lift kits, oversized tires, auxiliary wiring, winches, and other additions should be professionally installed and documented. A heavily modified truck with no records may have experienced harder use than its mileage suggests.
Safety results must be treated separately from capability. The current IIHS midsize-SUV table shows an incomplete rating for the 2026 4Runner; that result should not be transferred to older model years, and the capability-oriented design should not be mistaken for equivalent crash-test performance across this list.
Main caveat: The 4Runner’s dated powertrain brings poorer fuel economy and less refined road behavior than most crossover rivals. Buy one because you need its construction and capability—not because you expect it to be the most comfortable or economical family SUV.
How to choose the right one
Choose the Highlander or Pilot for broad family duty
The Highlander is the stronger all-around recommendation when reliability reputation, resale demand, and available hybrid efficiency are high priorities. The Pilot is the better fit when third-row usability, interior storage, and a minivan-like approach to family transportation matter more. In both cases, the exact second-row configuration is important.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose the CX-9 if you care how an SUV drives
The CX-9 is the enthusiast-leaning choice. Its turbocharged engine and more engaging handling make it appealing to someone who finds many family SUVs dull, but the smaller third row and limited behind-the-third-row cargo area make it less suitable for regularly carrying adults or a full family load.
Choose the Outback for all-weather practicality
The Outback is particularly attractive when standard all-wheel drive, ground clearance, easy cargo loading, and winter-road confidence matter. It is not a three-row vehicle, and CVT maintenance, tire matching, and water-intrusion checks deserve more attention than a quick dealership walk-around usually provides.
Choose the Santa Fe, Palisade, or Telluride for features and space
The Santa Fe can offer strong used value, but its VIN-specific powertrain, recall, and warranty research is essential. The Palisade and Telluride are better choices when you need a quiet, roomy three-row cabin and modern features. Their used prices can remain surprisingly strong, so compare them against newer vehicles instead of assuming an older premium-brand-equivalent is automatically cheaper to own.
Choose the Murano or Edge for two-row comfort
The Murano is the relaxed, quiet highway choice, while the Edge offers roomy two-row practicality and wide used-market availability. Neither should be selected for third-row requirements, and Murano buyers in particular should insist on evidence of CVT maintenance.
Choose the 4Runner only for a real capability need
The 4Runner is appropriate for serious trail use, body-on-frame towing needs, or buyers who specifically want that truck-based design. If your driving is mostly commuting, highway travel, and family errands, a crossover such as the Highlander, Pilot, Palisade, Telluride, or Outback will usually be more efficient and refined.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The used-SUV buying process
1. Start with the exact vehicle, not the model reputation
Before arranging a test drive, record the vehicle identification number, model year, trim, drivetrain, mileage, build date, ownership history, title status, and available service records. “2021 Highlander” or “2022 Santa Fe” is only a starting point. The VIN and build information establish which engine, transmission, safety equipment, campaigns, and warranty conditions apply.
2. Run a VIN-specific recall search
Use the NHTSA recall lookup with the vehicle’s VIN. NHTSA’s tool can identify unrepaired safety recalls associated with that VIN, and recall remedies are generally performed free of charge by the manufacturer’s dealership. Ask the seller to complete open recalls before purchase or confirm with a dealer that the repair is available.
A commercial vehicle-history report serves a different purpose. It may help reveal title brands, reported accidents, ownership changes, auction history, or recorded service, but it is not a substitute for the NHTSA recall search and it cannot reveal every defect or repair. Treat both as screening tools, not proof that the SUV is clean.
3. Verify safety equipment by trim and build date
Do not assume that every example of a model has forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, or rear cross-traffic warning. Consumer Reports’ used-vehicle research cautions that five-year-old vehicles can differ substantially in the availability of these features.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
IIHS awards can also depend on headlights, optional crash-prevention hardware, trim, and production date. For example, the 2022 award list identifies the Santa Fe built after July 2021 and specifies equipment conditions for some other vehicles. Look up the relevant model year and inspect the vehicle for the actual sensors, camera hardware, warning messages, and system settings.
4. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection
Before money changes hands, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection with a qualified shop that is not financially tied to the seller. The inspection should cover structural repairs, corrosion, fluid leaks, the cooling system, brakes, tires, suspension, steering, driveline operation, diagnostic trouble codes, and evidence of flood or hail damage.
A simple Bluetooth OBD2 scanner can help you check for stored diagnostic trouble codes during an initial evaluation, especially if the dashboard looks normal but the vehicle has recently been reset. It cannot detect every mechanical, structural, or intermittent problem and cannot replace a professional inspection. Do not let a “no codes” result overrule poor transmission behavior, frame rust, uneven tire wear, fluid contamination, or an incomplete history.
If you prefer a physical reference while viewing several listings, a used-car inspection checklist book can help keep basic questions and observations organized. It is a memory aid, not a mechanical diagnosis.
Disclosure: Product recommendations may be monetized. That does not change the limits of a scanner, checklist, or inspection, and none of them guarantees that a used SUV will be trouble-free.
5. Focus on drivetrain-specific risks
- CVT-equipped Outback and Murano: require documented fluid service and a clean test drive with no shudder, hesitation, delayed engagement, or warning lights. Check for stored codes and have a technician evaluate the transmission if anything feels abnormal.
- Turbocharged CX-9, Santa Fe, and higher-output Edge versions: review oil-change intervals, cooling-system history, turbocharger behavior, leaks, smoke, and signs of overheating or deferred maintenance.
- 4Runner: inspect the frame, underbody, suspension, transfer case, differentials, and any trail or towing modifications. Rust and hard-use damage can be more important than the odometer reading.
- Hybrid Highlander: compare the hybrid’s fuel-economy benefit with the specific vehicle’s age, mileage, service history, and inspection results. Do not buy solely on the expectation that the hybrid badge guarantees lower ownership costs.
6. Test the seating and cargo in person
A three-row designation does not mean that every third row is equally usable. Bring the child seats, sports equipment, stroller, luggage, or mobility gear that you actually carry. Check whether children can reach the third row, whether the second row moves as expected, how much cargo remains behind the third row, and whether the liftgate opening works for your equipment.
This step often separates the recommendations. The Pilot, Palisade, and Telluride are stronger when the third row is used regularly. The Highlander works well for many families but is less adult-friendly in the back. The CX-9 is best when the third row is occasional. The Murano and Edge have no third row, while the Outback’s wagon-like cargo opening may be more useful than an SUV’s nominally taller cabin.
7. Compare total ownership cost
Compare more than purchase price. Estimate insurance, fuel, tires, brakes, scheduled maintenance, registration, and likely repairs. A lower-priced SUV can lose its advantage if it needs immediate tires, suspension work, cooling-system repairs, or transmission service. Conversely, paying more for a well-documented example can be sensible if it reduces uncertainty and includes the safety and convenience features you would otherwise need to add through a newer vehicle.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports reliability findings are based on survey and reported-vehicle data. They are useful evidence when comparing models, but they are not a promise about an individual SUV. A highly rated model can be damaged, neglected, or poorly repaired; a model with more mixed results can be a good purchase when a particular vehicle has excellent records and passes inspection.
IIHS test results and awards describe crash performance and prevention equipment under the applicable test and award conditions. They do not confirm that a used vehicle has not been crashed, that its sensors still work, or that its tires and brakes are safe. Check the specific model year, trim, production date, headlights, and optional equipment.
Likewise, a clean NHTSA result does not mean that a vehicle has no mechanical problems. NHTSA’s lookup is VIN-specific for unrepaired safety recalls; it is not a full maintenance, accident, title, or condition report. Use the recall search, history records, inspection, and test drive together.

Which one should you buy?
- Best broad family recommendation: Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.
- Best driving experience: Mazda CX-9.
- Best snow and all-weather practicality: Subaru Outback.
- Best feature and space value: Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride.
- Best two-row comfort: Nissan Murano or Ford Edge.
- Best specialized towing and trail vehicle: Toyota 4Runner.
- Best value-oriented alternative: Hyundai Santa Fe, provided the VIN and powertrain history check out.
Whatever model reaches the top of your list, buy the condition and history—not the badge. The best used midsize SUV is the one that fits your passengers and workload, has the safety equipment you actually want, clears the VIN and title checks, and passes an independent inspection at a price that leaves room for normal ownership costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best used midsize SUV for most families?
The Toyota Highlander is the strongest broad recommendation for buyers who value family usability, available hybrid efficiency, and a strong reliability reputation. The Honda Pilot is a better fit when a more usable third row and minivan-like interior practicality are priorities. The exact vehicle’s condition, maintenance, safety equipment, and price still matter more than the badge alone.
Which used midsize SUV has the most usable third row?
The Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride are among the better choices in this shortlist for regular third-row use. The Highlander’s third row is useful but less adult-friendly, while the Mazda CX-9 is better suited to occasional third-row passengers. Test the actual vehicle with your passengers and child seats before buying.
Is the Subaru Outback a midsize SUV?
The Outback is technically a raised wagon, but it is commonly classified with midsize SUVs because of its size, ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and utility. It is a strong choice for winter and cargo practicality, but it does not offer a third row.

Should I trust an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award on a used SUV?
Use it as helpful model-year evidence, not as a guarantee about the individual vehicle. IIHS awards can depend on production date, trim, headlights, and optional crash-prevention equipment. Verify the applicable year and equipment, then inspect the SUV for crash damage, warning lights, and properly functioning driver-assistance systems.
What is the most important step when buying one of these SUVs used?
Get the exact VIN, check it for unrepaired recalls, review its history and service records, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. A diagnostic scanner or checklist can support that process, but neither can replace a qualified inspection.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot for general family use, consider the CX-9 or Outback for a more specific driving personality, and choose the Palisade or Telluride when space and features lead the decision. The Murano and Edge are sensible two-row choices, the Santa Fe can be a value play after careful VIN research, and the 4Runner is the specialist for real trail or body-on-frame towing needs. In every case, the exact SUV must pass a VIN-specific recall check, history review, test drive, and independent inspection.
