There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of the best used Mercedes-AMGs, and a model recommendation cannot guarantee a sound car. These ten editorial picks span classic coupes, practical estates, hot hatches, SUVs and luxury roadsters. Choose by the role you need, then judge the specific car on condition, service records and model-specific inspection findings—not its badge alone.
How to choose a used Mercedes-AMG
Start with the job the car needs to do. A C63 Estate can combine performance with family utility; an A45 is a compact, focused hot hatch; an SL63 is a luxury roadster. Those are very different ownership propositions, even if all wear AMG badges.
Set aside money for servicing and repairs as well as the purchase. Autocar cautions that AMG servicing can be considerable, and the CL65’s Active Body Control suspension is one example of a system that can bring expensive repair exposure. The available guides do not provide standardized reliability scores or total-cost comparisons, so claims that one of these models is definitively the most reliable are not supported.
The model list below is an editorial shortlist organized by role, not an objectively ranked top ten. Buying guides cited here were published in 2017 and 2021; any specifications mentioned are tied to those guides, not a guarantee for every year or market. Ten used Mercedes-AMG models to consider
1. C63 Estate: the performance wagon
If you need usable space alongside a high-performance character, the C63 Estate is the most practical starting point on this list. Autocar’s 2017 guide described its 2008 example’s M156 V8 as generally robust and quoted 451bhp for that car. Those are period- and example-specific details, not a specification for every C63 Estate.
The same guide notes reported cylinder-head-bolt failures that can cause severe engine damage. That is an inspection and documentation prompt, not proof that every M156 will fail. Ask for relevant maintenance and repair records, and have the engine assessed by a specialist before purchase.
2. C63 Coupé: a less practical, more focused C63
The Coupé is for buyers who value the C63 driving experience over estate-car utility. Autocar characterizes it as the least practical C63 body style but a strong drive. As with the Estate, check the exact year and engine rather than assuming every generation shares the same specification or risks.
If a seller advertises a Performance Pack, ask for evidence of the equipment. Autocar describes that pack as including a limited-slip differential, upgraded brakes and stiffer suspension; verify the car’s specification from its records rather than relying on the listing description.

3. CLK55: a discreet V8 coupé
The CLK55 offers a subtler route into an older AMG coupé. Autocar’s 2017 guide gave its CLK55 example 362bhp and an approximate 0–62mph time of five seconds. These figures describe the guide’s example and should not be generalized across years or regional specifications.
Inspect the wheel arches for rust and confirm that the five-speed automatic shifts smoothly. Autocar also warns that earlier Valeo radiators can allow coolant to contaminate transmission fluid, potentially damaging the gearbox. Establish which radiator is fitted and have the transmission and cooling system checked before committing.
4. E55 Estate: supercharged-V8 utility
The E55 Estate combines wagon practicality with a supercharged V8. Autocar quoted 469bhp for its guide example, but the figure is specific to that car and publication context.
Rust and the condition of the Airmatic suspension deserve close attention. The guide warns that Airmatic repairs can be costly, so check the system’s operation and have any faults priced by a qualified specialist rather than treating them as minor cosmetic issues.

5. A45: the compact hot hatch
The A45 is the compact, focused choice for a buyer who wants an AMG in hatchback form rather than a large engine in a big body. PistonHeads described it as potent and focused in a 2021 buying feature. That is a period assessment, not a guarantee of condition or a claim that every model year is identical.
Do not use historical price thresholds from a 2021 article as current market values. Compare cars by year, specification, documentation and condition, and make room in the budget for AMG-level maintenance.
6. C63 S (W205): a more modern turbo-V8 option
For a more modern C63, the W205-generation C63 S is a candidate to compare with the older M156 cars. PistonHeads’ 2021 feature described the W205 range across several body styles and cited 476hp for the standard C63 and 510hp for the S. Those are figures from that feature’s context; verify year, market and exact variant before relying on them.
This option makes sense if you prefer the newer generation’s turbo-V8 character and body-style choice. It does not remove the need to scrutinize service history, repairs and the individual car’s condition.

7. SL63: a performance grand-touring roadster
The SL63 suits a buyer seeking a fast, more luxurious open-top car. Autocar’s 2017 guide cited 518bhp and 0–62mph in 4.6 seconds for its 2010 example—historical, model-specific figures that should not be applied to all SL63s.
The guide also reports that some owners experienced persistent MCT transmission issues and flaky electronics. Treat those reports as reasons to test the car carefully and inspect its history, not as a universal defect rate. A thorough assessment of transmission behavior and electronic systems is particularly worthwhile.
8. C36 AMG: an older classic with a straight-six
The C36 is the classic choice for someone interested in an earlier AMG rather than the later V8 stereotype. The historical guides identify it as an older, lower-cost entry point in their period, and note that it used a straight-six. “Lower-cost” in those guides does not establish what a good example costs now or what it will cost to maintain.
Prioritize a well-documented, carefully inspected car over a low asking price. Age, condition and parts or repair needs can matter more than the model’s original position in a historical price guide.

9. ML63: a high-performance SUV
The ML63 brings AMG performance to an SUV format. Autocar’s guide cited 503bhp and a kerb weight close to 2,300kg for its example; check the precise year and specification before treating those numbers as applicable to a car for sale.
The guide emphasizes the vehicle’s weight and very poor fuel economy. Consider that everyday cost and character alongside the appeal of an SUV body, rather than evaluating it as if it were a lighter sports car.
10. CL65: a luxury flagship with specialist costs
The CL65 is the choice here for buyers seeking an extreme luxury-performance coupé, not a low-cost way into AMG ownership. Its Active Body Control suspension can make maintenance and repairs expensive, a risk highlighted by Autocar.
Check for suspension warnings, verify fluid level and look for visible hydraulic leaks. Given the potential repair costs, a specialist inspection is especially important before purchase.
Inspect the individual car, not just the model
Service history, ownership background and present condition should decide between two otherwise appealing examples. A specialist pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle-history check are sensible steps; neither can guarantee a good purchase, but they can help uncover issues that a short viewing may miss.
- Match the car’s VIN, year, engine and body style to the seller’s claims and available records.
- Review service invoices and repair documentation, not only a stamped booklet.
- Ask the inspector to focus on known model-specific concerns, including CLK55 rust and transmission behavior, M156 C63 engine history, E55 Estate rust and Airmatic condition, SL63 transmission and electronics, or CL65 Active Body Control.
- Test all major systems and features, and investigate warning lights or inconsistent operation before negotiating.
- Keep a repair reserve appropriate to a high-performance luxury car; the available guides do not establish a single reliable figure for that reserve.
