The engines below earned their reputations for different reasons: straightforward design, broad service familiarity, long-running applications, or the ability to handle demanding work when maintained. The right choice depends on whether you value simplicity, towing torque, high-rpm performance, diesel range, or a practical swap.
What “refuse to die” really means
Longevity is a reputation, not a specification. A well-maintained engine in a lightly loaded vehicle can outlast a neglected example of the same design; overheating, poor repairs, hard use, and modifications can all change the outcome. Toyota has not established that every example of any engine here will reach 300,000 miles—or any other fixed distance.
There is one useful measure of how widely an engine was built: Toyota Motor Corporation reported that production of the 22R ended in August 1997 after 6.5 million units. That figure is cumulative production, not a survival or reliability rate. For the Land Cruiser, Toyota USA’s company history says the vehicle “quickly gained a reputation as a durable, all-terrain vehicle”; that describes the platform’s reputation, not a guarantee about every engine installed in it.
Use the comparison below as a shortlist, then check the exact vehicle, engine revision, market, emissions rules, and service history. An engine code alone does not establish that a particular vehicle is a straightforward or legal swap.

The engines, one by one
1. 22R and 22R-E: the familiar pickup four-cylinder
The 22R is carbureted; the 22R-E uses electronic fuel injection. Both are part of the 2.4-liter R family and are closely associated with Toyota pickups. Their appeal is not a promise of immunity to wear: it is a relatively straightforward design backed by a large historical fleet and generations of repair experience. Toyota’s 6.5-million production figure applies to the 22R before production ended in August 1997; it does not count surviving engines or establish how long an individual engine will last. When comparing examples, distinguish the carbureted and injected versions, and judge the actual engine’s condition and service records.
2. 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE: performance with different trade-offs
The 2JZ-GE is naturally aspirated; the 2JZ-GTE is the turbocharged version. Toyota’s technical history records development of CT20A twin-turbo hardware for the GTE in 1991 and VVT-i adoption in the GE timeline. That engineering history helps explain why the family became a performance fixture, but it does not make every 2JZ “indestructible.” A stock engine, a modified engine with careful heat management, and a heavily altered engine with unknown tuning are materially different ownership propositions. Turbo hardware, prior modifications, supporting systems, and parts costs belong in the decision—not just the engine code.

3. 1UZ-FE: an all-aluminum V8 with a luxury-car service bill
The 1UZ-FE is an all-aluminum V8 used in Lexus and Toyota passenger-car applications. Toyota’s history associates the 1UZ with valve-lifter and other tribological developments, and records electronic throttle adoption in 1997. Early non-VVT-i and later VVT-i versions should not be treated as identical when sourcing parts or planning controls. Timing-belt service is part of ownership, while access and labor can be shaped by the original luxury-car installation. It suits a build seeking smooth V8 power, provided the vehicle and budget can accommodate the complete installation and its upkeep.
4. 2UZ-FE: a truck V8 built around torque
The 2UZ-FE’s cast-iron block and truck-oriented mission distinguish it from the lighter 1UZ-FE. Toyota and Lexus used UZ-family engines in truck and SUV applications, where low-speed torque is valuable. The trade-off is fuel use, as well as scheduled timing-belt maintenance. It makes more sense for a truck or SUV that benefits from torque under load than for a project where low weight or fuel economy is the priority.

5. 1FZ-FE: the Land Cruiser inline-six
The 1FZ-FE represents the naturally aspirated Land Cruiser six-cylinder approach: torque delivery and a comparatively uncomplicated engine choice for off-road use. Toyota technical-service material lists both 1FZ-F and 1FZ-FE engine families. Toyota’s durability statement applies to the Land Cruiser platform, not a quantified 1FZ-FE lifespan. Its reputation is best understood through that vehicle context and the service familiarity built around Land Cruiser use, rather than a mileage promise.
6. 1HD-FTE: diesel torque with more injection complexity
The 1HD-FTE is the diesel option here for readers weighing Land Cruiser torque and expedition range. Toyota records development of electronically controlled, 120 MPa high-pressure injection-pump technology for this engine. That system is an engineering feature, not evidence of a particular service interval or lifetime. Compared with simpler 1HZ or 1FZ alternatives, the 1HD-FTE’s injection equipment makes diagnosis and maintenance more involved; choose it when the diesel system can be serviced competently and its advantages suit the vehicle’s use.

7. 4A-GE: compact size and high-rpm character
Toyota developed the 4A-GE for Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno applications. Its technical history describes a five-valve four-cylinder developed to combine high performance with practical drivability, quietness, and fuel economy; Toyota records its development in 1991. The family includes 16-valve and 20-valve generations, so parts and tuning support depend on which version is being considered and where the car will be maintained. It is a distinctive choice for a light, high-rpm build, not a substitute for a truck engine designed around low-speed work.
8. 3S-GE and 3S-GTE: naturally aspirated or turbocharged
The 3S-GE and 3S-GTE offer two different performance paths within the S-family four-cylinder. Toyota’s history records a twin-entry turbocharger for the 3S-GTE and Dual VVT-i for the 3S-GE. A naturally aspirated GE avoids the GTE’s turbo hardware and associated heat load; a GTE build must account for turbo condition, supporting components, and drivetrain packaging. The specific generation and installation matter, so an engine code alone is not enough to settle parts compatibility or swap complexity.

9. 5VZ-FE: a practical 3.4-liter truck V6
The 5VZ-FE is a 3.4-liter V6 associated with 4Runner, Tacoma, and related Toyota applications. Toyota technical-service documentation lists the engine family. Its workhorse reputation rests on the breadth of those truck and SUV applications and its useful torque delivery, not on a published mileage guarantee. Timing-belt service is a key ownership item. Verify the vehicle’s exact model year and configuration before ordering parts or assuming a particular installation will interchange.
10. 1GR-FE: a newer Toyota V6 for trucks and SUVs
The 1GR-FE brought VVT-i into Toyota’s newer gasoline-engine rollout for truck and SUV use. Toyota’s Tahara history documents 1GR production for the Land Cruiser Prado. Early and later versions differ by application, so electronics and parts should be matched to the vehicle rather than inferred from the engine code alone. Cooling-system and timing-system maintenance also require the procedures and parts specified for that exact application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Toyota engine should you choose?
There is no evidence-based answer to “which one lasts longest” across these ten: Toyota does not publish a ranked longevity score or a universal mileage statistic for them. Choose by the demands of the vehicle and the condition of the particular engine.
- For simplicity and service familiarity: consider the 22R/22R-E, while accounting for the age of the vehicle and the difference between carburetion and EFI.
- For a performance build: compare the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE or 3S-GE with their turbocharged counterparts based on intended output, heat management, parts cost, and drivetrain fit. The 4A-GE is the compact, high-rpm choice.
- For truck or SUV torque: weigh the 2UZ-FE, 1FZ-FE, 5VZ-FE, and 1GR-FE against the vehicle’s weight, service needs, and parts support.
- For a Land Cruiser diesel build: the 1HD-FTE’s torque and expedition-oriented appeal come with more injection-system complexity than simpler alternatives.
- Before committing to a swap: confirm the exact engine revision, transmission and mount compatibility, wiring and control requirements, parts availability, emissions compliance, and local legality. A documented service history and a proper condition assessment matter more than an engine’s reputation alone.
For service work, use the repair information for the exact engine and vehicle year; belt procedures, injection diagnosis, and parts fitment should not be inferred from a family name. Toyota’s technical-service documentation and vehicle-specific factory manuals are the appropriate references for those procedures.
