The more substantial hardware changes arrived with the 2025 model, including winglets on both the R1 and R1M and new suspension and front brakes on the standard R1. These details apply to Yamaha’s Japan releases; equipment and availability may differ in other markets.
What’s new on the Yamaha YZF-R1?
Yamaha’s Japan-market releases separate into two model years: 2025 brought the notable component updates, while the January 2026 announcement focused on colors and a commemorative edition. The standard YZF-R1 and higher-grade R1M share some 2025 changes, but the suspension and brake updates described below are specific to the standard R1.
10 key highlights
1. A 997 cm³ crossplane inline-four
Yamaha identifies the 2025 Japan-market R1 engine as a water-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC inline-four with four valves per cylinder and 997 cm³ displacement. The cited release does not state power, torque, top speed, or acceleration figures, so those numbers should not be inferred from the engine description. Yamaha’s 2025 R1 announcement.
2. Winglets on the 2025 R1 and R1M
Yamaha added winglets to both 2025 road models and says they are intended to contribute to vehicle stability. That is the manufacturer’s stated purpose, not a published measurement of a handling or stability improvement. Yamaha’s 2025 R1 announcement.

The system measures acceleration along the forward/back, up/down, and left/right axes, as well as angular velocity in pitch, roll, and yaw, then relays information to engine and chassis systems. This is historical context for the R1’s technology lineage, not a complete inventory of equipment on the 2026 model. Yamaha’s R1 technology explainer.
10. A separate circuit-only race-base model is planned

In practical terms, the release connects that theme to the winglets while also listing the seat, suspension, and brake changes.
