Japanese luxury cars can pair a quiet, comfortable cabin with a strong brand-level reliability reputation, but that is not proof that every model or model year will be dependable. Lexus and Toyota rate well in Consumer Reports’ recent brand-level reliability coverage; choosing a specific car still requires checking evidence for its year, powertrain and service history.

Here are 10 Lexus and Acura candidates across sedans, coupes and SUVs, drawn from J.D. Power’s U.S. premium-model roster—not a ranked list of proven reliability winners. The available evidence supports a detailed 2025 comparison of the Lexus NX and Acura RDX, but not a claim that all 10 have equally strong model-level reliability results.

What counts as luxury—and what counts as reliable?

For this list, “luxury” means a premium-oriented car or SUV whose appeal can include a quieter cabin, more comfortable ride, upgraded materials, additional technology and a more upscale ownership experience. Those qualities vary by trim and model year, so evaluate the exact vehicle rather than assuming that a badge guarantees them.

Reliability needs the same precision. Brand-level predictions can help narrow a search, but they do not establish the dependability of every model. Initial-quality studies measure problems reported early in ownership; longer-term dependability evidence is a different measure. Check the specific model year and powertrain before treating a reputation as a verdict.

Consumer Reports identifies Lexus as Toyota’s upscale sub-brand and describes the brands as having strong reliability context. That is useful background, not a guarantee for an individual car or a model-by-model ranking. See Consumer Reports’ reliability coverage and its Lexus brand page.

10 Japanese premium cars to put on your shortlist

J.D. Power’s U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study profile includes the Lexus and Acura models below. Its roster establishes that these vehicles are covered in premium segments; it does not, by itself, provide a reliability result for each one. Treat the list as a starting point for comparing body styles and checking model-year evidence, not as a top-10 reliability ranking. The J.D. Power VDS profile lists these models.

  1. Lexus IS: A premium sedan candidate for shoppers who want a more compact footprint than the ES or LS. Verify the year and configuration you are considering.
  2. Lexus ES: A sedan option to consider if comfort and everyday practicality matter more than choosing a coupe or SUV.
  3. Lexus LS: The larger Lexus sedan on this shortlist; compare its equipment, condition and ownership costs with the specific alternatives you are shopping.
  4. Lexus RC: A premium coupe choice for buyers who prefer two-door styling. Do not transfer reliability evidence from another Lexus model without checking the RC’s year.
  5. Lexus LC: A distinct coupe candidate in the Lexus roster. Its presence in a study profile does not establish a reliability rating.
  6. Lexus NX: A compact premium SUV offered in the 2025 U.S. comparison with gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain choices. Its cargo space and study placement are discussed below.
  7. Lexus RX: A larger SUV candidate. In J.D. Power’s 2025 Japan initial-quality study, the RX ranked highest in the large-SUV segment; that result is specific to Japan and initial quality, not long-term U.S. dependability.
  8. Lexus GX: An SUV option for shoppers who need a different size and use case from the NX or RX. Check the exact year’s service history and reliability data.
  9. Lexus LX: The larger Lexus SUV listed in the J.D. Power profile. Its inclusion is not evidence that it shares the reliability result of another Lexus model.
  10. Acura RDX: A compact premium SUV alternative to the NX. The 2025 U.S. comparison reports a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and SH-AWD.

2025 Lexus NX vs. Acura RDX: a useful compact-SUV comparison

The 2025 U.S.-market comparison shows why a buyer should weigh specific needs rather than choose by brand reputation alone. It provides concrete differences in powertrain choice and cargo capacity, while its study results do not put either vehicle in the segment’s top three.

2025 U.S. model Powertrain information in J.D. Power comparison Cargo space behind second row J.D. Power study placement Basic and powertrain warranty
Lexus NX Several choices, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions 22.7 cubic feet Not in the top three of the compact premium SUV segment in the cited 2025 VDS or 2024 IQS Same basic and powertrain warranty coverage as the RDX, according to the comparison; coverage lengths are not stated here
Acura RDX Turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and SH-AWD 31.1 cubic feet Not in the top three of the compact premium SUV segment in the cited 2025 VDS or 2024 IQS Same basic and powertrain warranty coverage as the NX, according to the comparison; coverage lengths are not stated here

The figures and study placements are for the models and studies specified in J.D. Power’s 2025 Lexus NX vs. 2025 Acura RDX comparison. The cargo difference may matter if you regularly carry bulky items; the NX’s additional powertrain choices may matter if you are comparing gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid ownership. Neither point settles which vehicle will be more dependable for you.

How to read reliability evidence without overclaiming

Brand reliability is a useful filter, not a model guarantee

Consumer Reports’ favorable Lexus and Toyota brand-level context can help identify makes to investigate. It cannot tell you whether a particular Lexus IS, NX or GX—or a particular model year—will avoid repairs. Use brand reputation to make a shortlist, then seek model-specific results and inspect the individual vehicle.

Dependability and initial quality answer different questions

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. NX/RDX comparison cites both the 2025 VDS and 2024 Initial Quality Study (IQS), and neither model is in the top three of its compact premium SUV segment in those studies. That is not a claim that either vehicle is unreliable; it is a limit on calling either a segment leader based on those results.

The Japan-market IQS offers a separate snapshot. In its release dated September 30, 2025, J.D. Power reported 140 problems per 100 vehicles across the study, 12 fewer than in 2024. The study surveyed 20,101 new-vehicle owners about two to nine months after purchase, and named the Lexus RX the highest-ranking model in Japan’s large-SUV segment. These are early-ownership, Japan-market findings—not long-term dependability ratings for U.S. vehicles. See J.D. Power’s 2025 Japan IQS release.

The same release notes that driving-assistance problems remained an area for improvement despite decreasing. When trying a vehicle, test the driver-assistance features you expect to use and check whether the infotainment system is clear and easy to operate; study-wide comments do not establish how a particular car’s systems will work for you.

How to choose the right one for your needs

  • Start with body style and space. Choose among sedan, coupe and SUV candidates based on passenger needs, parking, cargo and the way you use the vehicle. For a concrete compact-SUV example, the cited 2025 comparison gives the RDX more cargo room behind the second row than the NX.
  • Compare powertrains on the exact year. The 2025 U.S. NX comparison includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, while the RDX uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and SH-AWD. Confirm which versions are available for your market and model year.
  • Check model-year reliability evidence. Look for results tied to the exact model and year rather than inferring from Lexus or Acura as a whole. A roster entry or early-quality result is not a long-term reliability finding.
  • Review ownership records and warranty terms. Confirm service history, outstanding repairs and coverage for the vehicle’s market, model year and condition. The NX/RDX comparison says their 2025 U.S. basic and powertrain warranty coverage is the same, but does not state coverage lengths in the comparison details summarized here.
  • Test the cabin and controls. Sit in the seats, assess ride and cabin noise on a route like your normal commute, and try the infotainment and driver-assistance controls rather than judging technology by a feature list.

Bottom line: shortlist by fit, then verify the exact car

The Lexus and Acura models here are credible Japanese premium candidates across several body styles, but the evidence does not justify calling all 10 proven highly reliable or ranking them by dependability. Use Lexus and Toyota’s favorable brand-level context as a starting point; make the final decision with model-year evidence, a review of the individual car’s records and a test drive. The 2025 NX/RDX comparison is a useful example of how space, powertrain choice and study placement can differ even within one segment.
