Japanese classics span more than one era: from the Toyota 2000GT and Datsun 240Z to analog-era favorites such as the Acura NSX, Mazda RX-7 and Nissan Skyline GT-R. There is no single age threshold or legal definition behind “classic” here. This is a representative, unranked selection of cars with documented historical significance or collector-guide coverage—not a definitive top ten.
What makes a Japanese car a classic?
“Classic” is not a universal classification with one agreed age cutoff. Hagerty’s valuation tools use categories such as “Modern Classic” and “Neoclassic,” while the 2024 Sports Car Market Pocket Price Guide describes newer enthusiast cars as “Next Gen Japanese” collectibles. This guide uses classic in that broad enthusiast sense: a car with historical, design, motorsport or collector significance.
The selection spans early grand touring and sports cars as well as later performance models. It is not a ranking, and inclusion does not mean every example is rare or valuable. Generation, variant, condition, originality and location can all change a car’s collector appeal.
10 Japanese cars with classic or collector appeal
1. Toyota 2000GT
Toyota’s 2000GT was conceived as an international grand touring car, not merely a domestic curiosity. It debuted at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show with a 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine and Yamaha-developed double-overhead-cam head, plus a five-speed gearbox, limited-slip differential and four-wheel disc brakes. In 1966, a prototype set 13 FIA time and distance records over 72 hours at Yatabe Circuit.

The car’s rarity and history are reflected in a notable, but dated, auction result: Gooding & Company sold a 1967 2000GT for $2,535,000 at Amelia in 2022, as reported by IMSA/Hagerty. That is one historic sale, not a current estimate for every 2000GT. IMSA/Hagerty’s account of the sale and the model’s history.
2. Datsun 240Z
The 240Z brought sports-car looks and competition credentials to a wider audience. In the cited account of Japanese motorsport history, a Datsun 240Z won the SCCA C-Production podium two years after the Toyota 2000GT’s record-setting campaign. The 2024 Sports Car Market guide lists 168,000 cars for the 1970–73 model and notes interest in pristine Series I examples. That production figure and the guide’s valuations belong to that edition; they are not a current market count or price quote.
3. Mazda RX-7
The RX-7’s rotary-engine identity runs across three distinct generations: SA/FB, FC and FD. Treating them as one collector model obscures meaningful differences in design, age and market interest. The 2024 Sports Car Market guide separates their year ranges and estimates; it states that 13,000 FD cars were sold in the United States for 1993–95. That is the guide’s figure, not an independently verified production total.
4. First-generation Acura NSX
The first-generation NSX established a place among modern Japanese collectibles, and the 2024 Sports Car Market guide distinguishes NA1 and NA2 cars rather than treating every first-generation NSX as interchangeable. It gives a production figure of 18,685 NA1 cars for 1990–96. Its value estimates are specific to the 2024 guide, not current quotations.
5. Toyota Supra
The A80 Supra is among the “Next Gen Japanese” cars covered by the 2024 collector guide. But “Supra” alone is too broad for a meaningful collectability or price claim: generation, specification and market matter. A separate October 2026 Japanese dealer-listing analysis treats the JZA80 as its own family and reports asking prices, not completed-sale values. Those listings should not be read as a global appraisal.

6. Nissan Skyline GT-R
The Skyline GT-R’s collector story crosses generations. The 2024 Sports Car Market guide lists the R32 and discusses R33 and R34 examples; it states 43,000 R32 cars for 1989–94. Hagerty’s 2026 Bull Market List, published in 2025, includes 1995–98 Skyline GT-Rs and gives a figure of $82,350. That is a dated list figure, not a uniform value for every car or a guaranteed current selling price.
7. Mazda MX-5 Miata
The MX-5’s appeal is not limited to rare, high-performance editions: its accessible sports-car formula has helped it earn broad enthusiast interest. The 2024 guide covers the NA and NB generations and notes a transmission-related value adjustment. Hagerty’s 2026 Bull Market List, published in 2025, includes 1999–2005 Miatas. These references do not make every Miata a collectible at the same level or value; generation and condition still matter.
8. Honda S2000
The S2000’s high-revving roadster character has made it a strong enthusiast candidate, and the 2024 Sports Car Market guide includes its production years and value ranges. It also flags a substantial adjustment for the CR variant. That distinction matters: a standard S2000 and an S2000 CR should not be treated as equivalent when discussing collector interest or price.
9. Acura Integra Type R
The Integra Type R represents the front-wheel-drive side of Japanese performance-car history. The 2024 guide separates model years, production information and price estimates, providing evidence of collector-guide coverage. Those estimates are historical guide figures, not today’s market prices; a specific car’s year, condition and originality remain important.
10. Mitsubishi 3000GT
The 3000GT belongs to the technologically ambitious Japanese performance era of the 1990s. Hagerty’s surfaced description of its 1994 valuation page groups it with the A80 Supra, FD RX-7, Honda NSX and Z32 Nissan 300ZX as memorable performance cars. That supports its place in the era’s story, but not a present-day valuation or a claim that every 3000GT has the same collector standing.

How to read classic-car price claims
A published figure can describe very different things: a completed auction sale, a guide’s estimated range, a list’s headline number or a dealer’s asking price. They are not interchangeable. Hagerty says its valuation tools draw on private sales, dealer transactions and auction results, and describes its estimates as informational rather than financial advice. The 2024 Sports Car Market guide is useful for dated comparisons and model coverage, but its estimates are not 2026 values.
A TSUISO Japan analysis counted 496 priced dealer listings across six model families on Goo-net on October 5, 2026, and calculated Japanese listing-price medians using an exchange rate of ¥160 per U.S. dollar. Those are asking prices from a snapshot, not completed sales or a picture of the entire Japanese or global market. A listing can also reflect a car’s condition and specification, not just its badge. For a specific car, compare like with like: the same generation and variant, similar condition and originality, and sales or listings from the relevant geography and channel. A headline result such as the 2000GT auction or a Bull Market List figure can indicate interest, but it cannot establish what an individual car is worth today.
Why these ten—and what they leave out
The selection deliberately balances landmark early cars with later enthusiast models. The 2000GT and 240Z connect Japanese sports cars to international ambition and competition; the NSX, RX-7, Supra, Skyline GT-R and others show how collector attention extends into more recent decades. It is a representative cross-section, not an authoritative or exhaustive roster. The 2024 guide also notes author Mark R. Brinker’s forecast that “Lower-production Next Gen models such as the Japanese-market Honda NSX-R and Lexus LFA will likely show the greatest appreciation.” That is a prediction made in a 2024 guide, not a guarantee.
For historical context, the 2024 Sports Car Market Pocket Price Guide includes Japanese model years, production information and dated value estimates. Use it as a period reference, not a current price quote. Hagerty explains its valuation categories and data sources in its valuation tools overview.
