These ten facts trace the Milanese symbols on its badge, landmark racing victories, influential cars and the company’s changing industrial role.
1. Alfa Romeo began as A.L.F.A. in Milan
The company was registered on 24 June 1910 as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, abbreviated to A.L.F.A. According to Alfa Romeo’s centenary history, local entrepreneurs took over the Italian operations and Portello workshops of Società Italiana Automobili Darracq before founding the new company.
2. Nicola Romeo added “Romeo” to the name
Nicola Romeo acquired the company on 2 December 1915, and its name became Alfa-Romeo. The change reflects a new chapter in the firm’s ownership, not its original 1910 founding. Alfa Romeo dates both milestones in its centenary chronology.
3. The badge’s main symbols come from Milan
The emblem combines a red cross associated with Milan and the Biscione, a serpent linked to the Visconti family, which ruled the city. The word MILANO appeared in the lower part of the badge from 1910 through 1972. Alfa Romeo recounts the emblem’s history in its 2024 explanation of the Milano name.

4. The Quadrifoglio began as a racing good-luck symbol
The four-leaf clover first appeared on an Alfa Romeo race car in 1923, when Ugo Sivocci’s RL TF carried it at the Targa Florio. Alfa Romeo says the symbol began as a lucky charm and later became associated with the brand’s high-performance cars. Its own accounts describe the 1923 debut and its subsequent significance.
5. The P2 won the 1925 Automobile World Championship
Alfa Romeo’s historical timeline credits the P2 with winning what it calls the first Automobile World Championship in 1925, the first of five such victories for the marque. That period’s championship wording is not the same as saying the P2 won a modern Formula 1 title. The distinction matters: the P2 milestone predates the Formula 1 world championship, which began in 1950. See the company’s centenary timeline.
6. An Alfa Romeo took the 1930 Mille Miglia—and the first four places
In 1930, Tazio Nuvolari and Giovanni Battista Guidotti won the Mille Miglia in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport. Alfa Romeo’s 2025 retrospective says its cars also claimed the first four places that year. The achievement was a race result, not a production-car record; the account is in the company’s 115th-anniversary retrospective.
7. Alfa Romeo won Formula 1’s first two drivers’ titles
Alfa Romeo’s retrospective credits the Tipo 158 Alfetta with winning the inaugural Formula 1 season in 1950, driven by Nino Farina. Juan Manuel Fangio then won the 1951 title in an Alfa Romeo 159. These are separate Formula 1 milestones from the P2’s 1925 Automobile World Championship. The company recaps both seasons in its 2025 history.

8. Portello’s work included aircraft engines and ammunition
Alfa Romeo’s early history was not limited to cars. During World War I, the Portello factory shifted to wartime production that included aircraft engines, compressors, ammunition and trains. Car production resumed after the war, according to the company’s centenary account.
9. The 1900 helped move the company toward larger-scale production
Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1950, the 1900 was Alfa Romeo’s first car produced on a large scale, according to the company’s retrospective. Its centenary history also associates the model with the first assembly chain at Portello. That makes the 1900 significant not just as a car, but as a step in how the company built cars. Alfa Romeo recounts the model’s role in its centenary history and 115th-anniversary retrospective.

10. The 2027 all-electric range was a stated objective, not a confirmed lineup
In a 2024 press release, Alfa Romeo described the Tonale Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Q4 as having debuted in 2022 and presented an all-electric range in 2027 as a future objective. That wording records what the company said at the time; it does not establish whether the target remains in effect or which models are currently available in a particular market. The statement appears in the brand’s 2024 release about the Milano name.
