The most iconic Harley-Davidson Dynas span the inaugural 1991 FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis to the final 2017 models. This editorial selection weighs historical importance, distinctive factory identity, influence on the family and broad recognition—not sales figures or an objective popularity ranking. Harley-Davidson describes the Dyna family as running from 1991 through 2017; earlier FX designs shaped its lineage but were not Dynas.
How the Dyna family began—and ended
Harley-Davidson traces the Dyna’s design lineage to the 1971 FX Super Glide, which blended a big-twin chassis with a sportier front end, and the 1977 FXS Low Rider, associated with a lower seat, drag-style handlebars and highway foot pegs. The 1980 FXDWG Wide Glide added another precursor identity, with flame paint, ape-hanger handlebars and a wide front fork. These bikes belong to the family’s ancestry, not the Dyna era itself. Harley-Davidson’s Dyna history identifies the 1991 FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis as the first Dyna.
The Sturgis was the first Harley-Davidson designed with computer-aided design, according to the company. Its notable engineering details included a two-point engine-isolation mounting system, an internal steel frame and an oil tank beneath the transmission. The Dyna Daytona followed in 1992 as a limited-edition model for the 50th anniversary of Daytona Bike Week. In 1993, Dyna-chassis versions of the Wide Glide and Low Rider joined the family. In model year 1999, the Twin Cam 88 replaced the 1340cc Evolution engine in the Dyna family; the FXDX Super Glide Sport arrived in 2000. These milestones do not mean every Dyna year or model shared one engine configuration.
Harley-Davidson retired the Dyna line after model year 2017 and redesigned the Softail family for 2018. Some Dyna names and design elements continued, but the chassis distinction matters: Dynas used twin rear shocks, while the redesigned Softails used a hidden monoshock. A 2018 Softail carrying a familiar name is not a Dyna.

10 iconic Harley-Davidson Dyna models
The entries are ordered by editorial judgment, not by sales, production totals or a measured popularity ranking. Model codes and equipment can vary by year, so use the code and model year when identifying a specific motorcycle.
-
1991 FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis
The Sturgis earns the top spot as the bike that began the Dyna era. Its significance is more than its name: Harley-Davidson highlights its computer-aided design origins, engine-isolation mounting, internal steel frame and under-transmission oil tank. It is the clearest reference point for what made the Dyna a distinct family.
-
1992 FXDB Dyna Daytona
This limited-edition model commemorated the 50th anniversary of Daytona Bike Week. Its documented anniversary role gives it a place among the family’s notable early special editions. Harley-Davidson’s history text uses FXDB for the Daytona; check a particular bike’s year-specific documentation rather than assuming codes are interchangeable across model years.

-
Dyna Wide Glide (FXDWG)
The Dyna Wide Glide carried a recognizable Wide Glide identity onto the Dyna chassis. It should be distinguished from the 1980 FXDWG Wide Glide predecessor, which Harley-Davidson places in the pre-Dyna lineage. The model code guide and 2017 catalog identify FXDWG as a Dyna model code.

Dyna Low Rider (FXDL)
The Low Rider name dates to the earlier FXS design lineage, then joined the Dyna family in 1993. That continuity—an established factory-custom identity on a Dyna chassis—makes the FXDL one of the family’s defining names. Harley-Davidson’s 2017 catalog lists the FXDL Low Rider.
-
Dyna Super Glide (FXD)
The Super Glide name reaches back to the 1971 FX design that Harley-Davidson identifies as a Dyna predecessor. The Dyna Super Glide is a core model designation in the company’s code guide. The connection is historical and stylistic; the earlier FX Super Glide itself is not a Dyna.

-
Dyna Super Glide Sport (FXDX)
Added to the Dyna line in 2000, the FXDX brought a sport-oriented designation to the range. It stands out as a distinct factory model identity rather than a generic description of owner modifications. Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide lists FXDX as the Super Glide Sport.
-
Dyna Street Bob (FXDB)
The Street Bob became a prominent late-era Dyna, appearing in Harley-Davidson’s 2017 model lineup and parts catalog. Its FXDB code overlaps with the code Harley-Davidson’s history text assigns to the 1991 Sturgis and 1992 Daytona. That is why a model year is essential: FXDB alone does not identify one unique Dyna across the full family timeline.

Dyna Fat Bob (FXDF)
The Fat Bob was among the named Dyna models in Harley-Davidson’s 2017 lineup and catalog. Its place here reflects the distinct factory model designation and its role in the final Dyna range, rather than an unsupported claim about sales or reliability.

-
Dyna Low Rider S (FXDLS)
The Low Rider S was another of the final-year Dyna models listed in the 2017 catalog and lineup. The suffix matters: FXDLS identifies the Low Rider S, while FXDL identifies the Dyna Low Rider in the same catalog. Use the exact year and code when seeking parts or comparing specifications.
-
Dyna Super Glide Custom (FXDC)
The Super Glide Custom rounds out the selection because Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide recognizes it as a distinct Dyna designation. It represents the breadth of factory-named Super Glide variations beyond the standard FXD and sport-named FXDX.
How to identify a Dyna by year and code
Model names and codes are not a substitute for year-specific records. Harley-Davidson’s 2017 parts catalog, copyrighted 2018, lists these Dyna engine-code mappings for that catalog year:

- 2014 Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 Motorcycle Model 1/12 by Maisto 32326
| Catalog engine designation | Displacement listed |
|---|---|
| Twin Cam 96 | 1585 cm³ |
| Twin Cam 103 | 1690 cm³ |
| Twin Cam 110 | 1802 cm³ |
Those are engine-code descriptions in the 2017 Dyna catalog, not a claim that every model—or every Dyna year—used all three engines. For model identification, fitment or accessory compatibility, consult documentation for the exact motorcycle. Harley-Davidson’s model-code guide explains the role of codes in parts and accessory fitment, and the 2017 Dyna parts catalog is a year-specific reference.
What makes a Dyna different from a later Softail?
The Dyna’s defining chassis clue is its twin rear shocks. In the redesigned 2018 Softail family, Harley-Davidson concealed a monoshock beneath the seat and frame. The company says Dyna names and design elements carried forward into the Softail range, but that continuation does not make the 2018 motorcycles Dynas. When evaluating a listing, verify the model year and chassis rather than relying on a familiar badge or custom styling.
