Miatas can gain power through a supercharger or turbo, a larger Mazda-family engine, a different combustion engine, an electric motor, or a full competition build. But “supercar killer” is a hook, not a proven result: the available sources do not provide a consistent head-to-head test against identified supercars. The right choice depends on the specific car, supporting modifications, intended use, and local rules—not a headline horsepower figure.
For a current stock reference, Mazda North American Operations rates the U.S.-market 2026 MX-5’s 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G at 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. The ten paths below are distinct approaches, not ten equally documented, ready-to-buy packages.

Ten ways to add power or build for speed
1. Supercharge the Mazda engine
A supercharger keeps the Mazda engine in place while adding forced induction. The KraftWerks installation manual covers base-model Miatas from 1999–2005, including tools, fuel-system condition, cooling, compatibility, installation, and calibration cautions. It was revised in July 2009, so it does not establish that the system is currently sold or that any present-day emissions approval applies.

- COMPATIBILITY — Fits 1991-1994 Mercury Capri; 1991-1997, 1999-2000 Mazda Miata; 1994-1996 Mazda MX-3; 1994-1997 Ford Aspire.
- COMPATIBILITY – Fits 1994-1997 Ford Aspire; 1991-1991 Mercury Capri; 1992-1994 Mercury Capri; 1991-1991 Mazda Miata; 1992-1993 Mazda Miata; 1994-2000 Mazda Miata; 1994-1995 Mazda MX-3; 1995-1996 Mazda MX-3
- GET THE RIGHT PART -- Before purchasing, research to ensure that the part will fit your vehicle; enter all vehicle information (year, make, model, engine and trim) for compatibility and check qualifier notes
- Conversion Sets (CS) provide every gasket for lower engine work - add a Head Set (HS) for complete engine overhaul work
- Unsurpassed quality you can trust
The manual says the system was designed around the stock exhaust header and catalytic converter, advises dyno-checking the air-fuel ratio if those exhaust parts change, and lists CARB Executive Order status as pending. It also warns about temperature and overheating considerations, particularly for a modified car used in hot weather or on track. Treat those as cautions in an old manual, not a current fitment or certification guarantee.
2. Turbocharge the Mazda engine
A turbo is another way to retain the original engine, but it should not be treated as interchangeable with a documented supercharger kit. The material available here establishes no current, generation-specific turbo-kit specification or comparable tested output. Before choosing a system, verify its fitment for the exact generation and engine, then account for fueling, calibration, cooling, exhaust, and drivetrain capacity. Kit-specific performance, emissions, and reliability claims need to come from the manufacturer of the particular system.
3. Increase displacement within the Mazda engine family
A 2021 Mazda MX-5 Club of WA newsletter includes an NC owner’s account of converting from the original 2.0-liter MZR to a 2.4-liter engine. It also discusses Mazda L-series engines, including a 2.5-liter L5. This shows that larger Mazda-family engines are a community build path; it does not establish a standardized kit, a universal output, or compatibility across every MX-5 generation.

4. Swap in a Honda K-series
KPower says its original K-series Miata conversion was released in 2014 and that K-powered Miatas are used on the street, at track days, and in club racing. That is the company’s account of its platform, not an independent reliability assessment. A specific build requires checking the kit’s current generation fitment and the exact engine, transmission, accessories, and other parts included.
5. Swap in a GM Ecotec
EcotecMiata lists its V3.2 swap kit for NA and NB Miatas. The listed hardware includes an oil pan, mounts, transmission adapter, cooling hoses, and intake parts; the engine itself is excluded. The product page suggests an LE5 for a broad torque curve and says the adapter can be used with the NA/NB factory five- or six-speed transmission. Its listed starting price was $3,550 excluding GST/HST when the page was reviewed in 2026; a search result described the kit as out of stock, so neither the price nor availability should be assumed current.
A separate example shows what an Ecotec can look like as part of a full race build. EcotecMiata describes an NA using a Chevrolet Malibu L61 engine, Miata five-speed, 4.10 Torsen differential, Wilwood Dynapro front calipers, 11.5-inch front rotors, Raybestos ST-43 pads, and a Spec Miata roll cage. The builder reports more than 70 racing hours, eight endurance races of at least seven hours, and no engine-related mechanical failures for that car. Those are the builder’s claims about one car, not a reliability rate for Ecotec swaps generally.

6. Fit a GM LFX V6
V8R Performance documents a 2016 ND Miata build with a 3.6-liter LFX V6 and MV5 six-speed transmission. That establishes shop activity, not a standard conversion recipe, universal output figure, or bolt-in package for every ND. A buyer should get the exact parts list, fabrication scope, and drivetrain requirements for the car and shop carrying out the work.
7. Install an LS V8
V8-powered Miata builds appear in V8R shop material and Exomotive platform descriptions, but those references do not define one common LS package or specification. Availability of a shop’s past builds is not the same as an available turnkey installation. Flyin’ Miata says it no longer performs V8 conversions; its help article also raises federal legality questions and points readers toward specialist shops, including a specialist for ND conversions. Do not assume that company currently offers a V8 installation.
8. Convert an NC to a Jaguar AJ30 V6
Rocketeer describes a turnkey NC conversion built around a company-developed 3.0-liter Jaguar AJ30 V6. The company rates its standard specification at 300 bhp and 265 lb-ft and says the package was engineered for the NC without bulkhead alterations. These are Rocketeer’s claims, not independent test results. Its page lists a starting price of £25,000 excluding VAT at 20%, with actual cost dependent on specification. The company describes the offering as initially turnkey rather than a self-build kit and names its UK facility plus approved installers in Germany, the U.S., and Australia; confirm current service coverage and pricing directly.

9. Convert an NA to electric drive
OSSEV documents an MX-5e project based on a 1992 NA Eunos Roadster, using a Nissan Leaf EM57 motor and ZE1 inverter. Its page, updated January 10, 2026, lists 110 kW/149 bhp, 320 Nm, and 10,390 rpm for that configuration, with a fixed 1.8:1 reduction gearbox, prop shaft, and upgraded differential. The page also discusses a 136 kW/182 bhp and 350 Nm upgrade and an e+ option; those are upgrade paths, not the listed current configuration. Battery-pack and range material described as planned should likewise not be read as completed, verified results.
10. Build a Spec MX-5 race car
Mazda Motorsports describes its Spec MX-5 as a race conversion based on the NC road car, with a kit intended to supply nearly every part needed for a club-racing conversion. This is a whole-car competition route rather than an engine-swap recipe. Check current rules from the relevant sanctioning body before assuming a particular car, engine, or modification is eligible for a series.

Engine output alone does not tell you whether a conversion is suitable. The documented Ecotec race car paired its engine swap with a roll cage, brake upgrades, pads, suspension, and differential. That example does not prescribe the right parts for every build, but it illustrates why the supporting systems belong in the conversion plan.

- Drivetrain: Identify what stays and what changes: transmission, adapter, differential, axles, and related components. EcotecMiata’s listed kit, for example, includes a transmission adapter and describes use of a factory NA/NB gearbox; other swaps may require a different or more bespoke arrangement.
- Cooling, fuel, exhaust, and calibration: Confirm what the chosen engine or forced-induction setup requires, including whether existing components remain suitable. Do not transfer one kit’s instructions or output claims to another generation.
- Brakes, tires, suspension, and safety: Match the complete car to its intended road or competition use. The Ecotec race car’s cage and brake hardware are race-build details, not a universal street upgrade. A roll cage can affect occupant clearance and is not automatically safer for every road-car occupant.
- Mass and balance: Engine layout and added components can affect vehicle weight and balance. The cited sources do not provide comparable measured weights for these conversion paths, so request build-specific figures rather than relying on assumptions.
- Budget and downtime: A component-kit price is not the same as a complete installed conversion cost. The Ecotec listing excludes the engine, while Rocketeer describes a turnkey service; the sources do not establish comparable total costs across the options.
Road legality and safety are specific to the car and location
No conversion in this list can be called legal everywhere based on the available material. The KraftWerks manual’s 2009 “pending” CARB status does not establish current approval. Flyin’ Miata specifically flags federal legality questions for V8 conversions. Check current emissions, registration, inspection, and insurance requirements with the relevant authorities and a qualified local specialist before buying parts or beginning work.
A modified car should not be assumed to retain its original crash performance. Mazda’s history of the original MX-5 describes the challenge of balancing low mass with safety requirements, but it does not test later modified cars. For any build, assess seat and occupant clearance, airbags, fuel-system changes, brakes, and applicable safety rules. Competition equipment must satisfy the rulebook for the series in which the car will run.
