German TÜV inspection results favor several models in particular age groups; separate iSeeCars scores combine reliability, resale value and safety. Neither measure predicts the condition or repair costs of the specific vehicle you are considering.
How to use this shortlist
The strongest direct inspection evidence comes from Germany’s TÜV Report 2026, as summarized by AUTO BILD. Its major-defect rates describe vehicles examined in specific age bands and mileage ranges—not controlled comparisons of identical cars. ADAC roadside-breakdown statistics measure a different outcome, while iSeeCars’ 2026 scores are composite category ratings, not repair-cost estimates. Treat each as a screening clue, and compare cars by generation, age, mileage and records.
The candidates below are not an official rank-ordered top 10. Evidence is more direct for some models than others; the Porsche Macan, in particular, is included on the basis of a composite category score rather than a Macan-specific TÜV advantage.
German SUVs to consider used
1. Audi Q3
AUTO BILD’s summary of the TÜV Report 2026 describes the Q3 as better than average across the reported age groups and among models with comparatively favorable results across generations. That makes it a sensible inspection-history candidate, not a promise that a particular Q3 will be trouble-free. Compare the exact generation, engine and service record before settling on a listing.

2. Audi Q5
The Q5 appears among stronger SUVs in several TÜV age groups, but its results are not uniformly favorable. AUTO BILD flags the six-to-seven-year group as a notable exception and mentions suspension problems on the second generation. In the TÜV summary, Q5 major-defect rates were 4.2% at a mean 59,000 km for ages two to three; 6.3% at 80,000 km for ages four to five; 15.8% at 140,000 km for ages eight to nine; and 18.1% at 163,000 km for ages 10 to 11. These figures describe separate age-and-mileage groups, not the expected trajectory of one car. iSeeCars gives the Q5 a 2026 category quality score of 8.1/10.
3. Volkswagen Tiguan
The Tiguan has one of the clearest favorable inspection signals in this shortlist: TÜV Report 2026 data summarized by AUTO BILD shows a 9.6% major-defect rate for six-to-seven-year-old examples at a mean 97,000 km, against a 13.6% average for that age group. iSeeCars scores it 7.4/10 in its small/compact category. ADAC describes it as a practical, comfortable compact SUV. The third generation began in 2024; the Tiguan Allspace has a longer wheelbase and seven seats, so confirm which body style and generation a listing actually offers.

4. Volkswagen Touareg
AUTO BILD reports better-than-average TÜV results for the Touareg in all age groups covered and places it first among 12-to-13-year-old SUVs in that dataset. For that oldest group, the major-defect rate was 17.9% at a mean 204,000 km, compared with a 28.4% age-group average. This is a notable inspection result for older, high-mileage vehicles—not evidence that an individual Touareg will be inexpensive to maintain.
5. Mercedes-Benz GLC
The GLC appears in the first two inspection groups of AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison, and iSeeCars assigns it an 8.5/10 score in the luxury-small-SUV category for 2026. These measures point to a model worth considering, but the score combines reliability, resale value and safety; it is not a repair-cost rating. Check the specific year, engine, maintenance history and inspection record.

6. Mercedes-Benz GLE / earlier ML
AUTO BILD’s TÜV Report 2026 summary lists the GLE and its earlier ML predecessor among the stronger performers in several older age groups, including ages eight to nine, 10 to 11 and 12 to 13. Because the nameplate spans different generations, assess the individual vehicle rather than treating the entire line as one mechanically identical model. iSeeCars gives the GLE an 8.2/10 category quality score for 2026.
7. BMW X1
The X1 appears among stronger vehicles in the 10-to-11- and 12-to-13-year TÜV groups in AUTO BILD’s summary. This is age-group inspection evidence, not a model-year-specific reliability rate. Use it to identify a candidate, then verify the individual car’s mileage, service documentation and inspection history.

8. BMW X3
The X3 is included in AUTO BILD’s TÜV comparison and receives an 8.1/10 iSeeCars score in the luxury-small-SUV category for 2026. The generation matters: AUTO BILD describes the G01 as solid overall but notes occasional oil loss, while it identifies worn suspension components on the predecessor. Ask which generation and engine the listing has, and have an independent inspector check for oil leaks and suspension wear.
9. BMW X5
AUTO BILD’s summary groups the X5/X6 among stronger performers in the 12-to-13-year TÜV age group. iSeeCars gives the X5 a 7.8/10 score in its luxury-midsize category for 2026. Neither result establishes the ownership cost of a specific used X5; condition, maintenance and the exact configuration remain central to the buying decision.

10. Porsche Macan
The Macan’s case here is more limited: iSeeCars gives it a 7.8/10 score in the luxury-small-SUV category for 2026, but the reviewed TÜV summary does not provide enough Macan-specific detail to establish an inspection advantage. Consider it a premium alternative, not a reliability winner, and evaluate the car’s condition and likely repair budget particularly carefully.

A favorable model-level result cannot tell you whether a particular used SUV has been maintained, damaged or neglected. Before buying, compare candidates on the details that change their condition and suitability:
- Age, generation and mileage: Match the car to the relevant inspection age group where possible. Do not treat a result for one generation as proof about another.
- Service and inspection records: Ask for documented maintenance and TÜV or other local inspection history. Look for gaps and have unexplained issues checked.
- Condition-specific checks: Pay particular attention to the Q5’s noted second-generation suspension caveat and the X3’s generation-specific oil-loss or suspension concerns.
- Seats and body style: If you need seven seats, distinguish the Tiguan Allspace from the standard Tiguan. Confirm seating and configuration for the exact model year and market.
- Drivetrain and intended use: Confirm the engine and drivetrain on the specific vehicle and whether they suit your driving and local conditions; the cited comparisons do not establish a best configuration.
- Repair budget: Set a realistic budget for inspection and possible repairs. The available comparisons do not establish a directly comparable ownership-cost ranking or identify one model as definitively cheapest to maintain.
Do listing-level checks before you commit
- Request the VIN and documents. Check that the vehicle’s identity matches its paperwork, and request maintenance and inspection records.
- Check recalls by VIN. The model-level evidence here does not establish the recall status of any individual vehicle. Use the relevant manufacturer or national recall-check service for the car’s market.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the car’s specific generation and known model-level caveats, as well as its overall mechanical condition.
- Compare like with like. When weighing inspection figures or rankings, keep age, mileage, generation and measurement type in view rather than combining unlike results into a single reliability judgment.
What breakdown statistics can—and cannot—tell you
ADAC’s 2026 statistics cover breakdowns recorded in 2025 across qualifying models among 158 vehicle models from 27 manufacturers. Nearly half of assistance cases were attributed to 12-volt battery defects. That is a broad finding about breakdown causes, not evidence that a particular shortlisted SUV has a battery problem or that one model is more reliable than another.
ADAC also notes that nearly 75,000 Tiguans were sold in Germany in 2018. That historical sales figure is a measure of popularity, not a reliability result.
