10 Foreign-Branded Cars Actually Assembled in America (2026)

A foreign badge does not necessarily mean an imported car. Here are 10 Japanese, Korean, German, and other foreign-branded vehicles assembled in the United States for 2026, with plant locations, AALA content figures, and the caveats shoppers need to know.

Yes—many cars wearing Japanese, Korean, German, and other foreign badges are assembled in U.S. factories. For the 2026 model year, the clearest examples include the Volkswagen ID.4 in Tennessee, Honda Ridgeline and Odyssey models in Alabama, the Mazda CX-50 in Alabama, the Lexus TX in Indiana, the Acura MDX in Ohio, the Toyota Camry Hybrid in Kentucky, the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Georgia, and the BMW X5 in South Carolina.

There is an important distinction, however: assembled in the United States does not mean every part was made here. The list below separates final assembly from U.S./Canadian parts content, engine or motor origin, transmission origin, and brand ownership. Percentages come primarily from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2026 American Automobile Labeling Act data, while plant assignments come from automaker sources.

The 10 foreign-branded vehicles assembled in the United States

For this article, foreign car means a vehicle sold under a foreign-origin or foreign-headquartered brand. Made in America means that final vehicle assembly occurs at a U.S. plant—not that the vehicle is 100% American-sourced.

The figures below are for the 2026 model year where the NHTSA data identifies the configuration. A vehicle’s exact percentage and assembly location can change with its trim, powertrain, model year, destination market, or production allocation.

Vehicle Brand origin U.S. assembly plant 2026 U.S./Canadian content Important qualification
Volkswagen ID.4 Germany Chattanooga, Tennessee 75%–76% Varies by RWD/AWD configuration
Honda Ridgeline Japan Lincoln, Alabama 75% Includes the listed TrailSport configuration
Mazda CX-50 Japan Huntsville, Alabama 65% Hybrid also listed at 65%
Lexus TX 350 Japan Princeton, Indiana 65% Powertrain sourcing varies
Honda Odyssey Japan Lincoln, Alabama 70% U.S. final assembly, engine, and transmission origin listed
Acura MDX Japan East Liberty, Ohio 60%–70% Type S differs from FWD and regular AWD
Toyota Camry Hybrid Japan Georgetown, Kentucky 60% Current Camry is hybrid-only
Kia EV9 South Korea West Point, Georgia 60% Only selected U.S.-market trims are assembled there
Hyundai IONIQ 5 South Korea Bryan County, Georgia 58% Model year and variant matter
BMW X5 Germany Spartanburg, South Carolina Not quoted here U.S. assembly confirmed; parts mix varies

AALA percentages are combined U.S. and Canadian content, not U.S.-only content. They should not be read as a complete measure of American labor, engineering, software, battery minerals, corporate ownership, or total economic impact.

1. Volkswagen ID.4: Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the clearest examples of a German-branded electric vehicle assembled in America. Volkswagen’s Chattanooga facility builds the ID.4 alongside the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker also reported that ID.4 assembly resumed in Chattanooga in early 2025 after a temporary production interruption. Volkswagen’s Chattanooga production update and its 2026 ID.4 press materials identify the plant and model.

The 2026 AALA data lists 76% U.S./Canadian content for the ID.4 AWD Pro and 75% for the ID.4 Pro RWD. The same configuration data identifies the electric motor and reduction-drive or transmission components as originating in the United States.

This is a particularly strong U.S.-manufacturing example because the ID.4 is not merely finished here: the model has substantial reported U.S./Canadian content and a U.S.-origin electric motor. That still does not mean every Volkswagen sold in America is American-assembled. Models such as the Jetta, Taos, Tiguan, Golf GTI, and Golf R can have different production origins.

2. Honda Ridgeline: Lincoln, Alabama

Honda is headquartered in Japan, but the Ridgeline pickup is assembled at the Honda Alabama Auto Plant in Lincoln. Honda’s official Alabama plant history identifies the Ridgeline as a current product and records the plant’s Ridgeline production history.

The 2026 AALA data lists the Honda Ridgeline at 75% U.S./Canadian content. It also lists the engine and transmission origins as the United States. The Ridgeline TrailSport configuration is likewise listed at 75% U.S./Canadian content.

The Ridgeline is a useful reminder that foreign-branded American production is not limited to compact cars or sedans. This is a distinctly North American pickup, assembled in Alabama with one of the highest domestic-content figures among the vehicles on this list.

3. Mazda CX-50: Huntsville, Alabama

The Mazda CX-50 is assembled at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville, Alabama, a 50/50 joint venture between Mazda and Toyota. Mazda describes the CX-50 as its first vehicle produced at the facility, and its current model information labels the vehicle as assembled in America. See Mazda’s 2026 CX-50 model information and its production-launch announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2026 AALA table lists both the regular CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid at 65% U.S./Canadian content. The hybrid version is an instructive example of modern global manufacturing: it combines a Japanese Mazda badge, a U.S. joint-venture plant, and Toyota-derived hybrid technology.

Do not extend the CX-50’s assembly location to every Mazda SUV. The CX-50 is not interchangeable with the CX-5, CX-30, CX-70, or CX-90. The model and powertrain must be identified precisely.

4. Lexus TX: Princeton, Indiana

Lexus is Toyota’s Japanese luxury marque, yet the three-row Lexus TX is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton. It was the first Lexus model assembled at Toyota Indiana and the first Lexus SUV assembled in the United States, according to Lexus’ production announcement. Toyota’s current Indiana plant information also lists the TX among the facility’s products.

The 2026 AALA data lists the Lexus TX 350 at 65% U.S./Canadian content. Its engine origin is listed as the United States, while transmission origin can be Japan or the United States depending on the configuration.

  • Compact Design - Car diagnostic scanner is equipped with a 2.5 feet long cable and made of a very thick flexible insulator. There are 6 buttons on OBD2 Scanner:scroll up/down,enter/exit and buttons that quick query VIN vehicle number& the DTC fault code.
  • ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.

The TX is one of the more surprising entries because buyers often assume a large, high-end Lexus SUV must be imported from Japan. In reality, this model was developed for the North American market and is assembled in Indiana. That does not make every Lexus American-built; the assembly location is model-specific.

5. Honda Odyssey: Lincoln, Alabama

The Honda Odyssey has a long U.S. production history. Honda says the first Alabama-built Odyssey rolled off the line in 2001, and the current Alabama Auto Plant also builds the Passport, Pilot, and Ridgeline. The company’s plant overview confirms the current production relationship.

For 2026, the AALA table lists the Odyssey at 70% U.S./Canadian content. The engine and transmission origins are both listed as the United States.

That makes the Odyssey more than an imported family vehicle wearing a Japanese badge. Its final assembly and major powertrain sourcing are tied to the United States, although its parts supply chain remains international.

6. Acura MDX: East Liberty, Ohio

Acura is Honda’s Japanese luxury marque. The Acura MDX is assembled at Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, which identifies the MDX among its current products. Honda’s East Liberty plant page also records the facility’s MDX production history.

The domestic-content figure depends noticeably on configuration:

  • MDX FWD: 70% U.S./Canadian content
  • MDX AWD: 70% U.S./Canadian content
  • MDX AWD Type S: 60% U.S./Canadian content

All of those versions are listed with U.S. final assembly in the 2026 AALA information. The difference between 70% and 60% is why a broad statement such as the MDX is 70% American would be inaccurate. The exact trim and powertrain matter.

It is also important not to transfer the MDX’s production location to every Acura. The MDX is not the same production case as the TLX or Integra, and Honda’s model assignments can change.

7. Toyota Camry Hybrid: Georgetown, Kentucky

Toyota is headquartered in Japan, but the current Camry is built in Kentucky as a hybrid-only sedan. Toyota says the ninth-generation Camry began production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky and that the 2025-and-newer Camry uses Toyota’s hybrid system exclusively. The automaker’s Camry production announcement notes that the Kentucky plant has built Camrys since 1988.

The 2026 AALA data lists the Camry Hybrid at 60% U.S./Canadian content. Engine origin can be Japan or the United States depending on configuration, while transmission origin is listed as the United States.

The Camry is not as surprising to automotive shoppers as the Lexus TX or BMW X5, but it illustrates the central point well: a Japanese brand can have a deep, decades-long U.S. manufacturing footprint. The badge and the assembly plant tell different parts of the story.

8. Kia EV9: West Point, Georgia

Kia is headquartered in South Korea, but select U.S.-market EV9 configurations are assembled at Kia Georgia’s West Point plant. Kia began assembling the EV9 there in 2024, making it the first saleable electric vehicle assembled in Georgia, according to Kia’s production announcement.

The 2026 AALA data lists the Kia EV9 at 60% U.S./Canadian content and identifies the electric motor as originating in the United States. Kia’s 2026 materials describe the applicable vehicles as assembled in the United States from U.S. and globally sourced parts.

The word select matters. It is too broad to say every EV9 sold in every market is built in Georgia. A buyer should check the specific U.S.-market trim, VIN, and window sticker. Battery and other major component sourcing can also vary by configuration.

9. Hyundai IONIQ 5: Bryan County, Georgia

Hyundai is headquartered in South Korea, but U.S.-market IONIQ 5 production began at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia in October 2024. Hyundai identifies the IONIQ 5 among its U.S.-assembled vehicles on its Hyundai in America page.

The 2026 AALA data lists the IONIQ 5 at 58% U.S./Canadian content and identifies the electric motor as originating in the United States. Other sourcing details vary by configuration. Hyundai’s current U.S. production information and the 2026 Cars.com American-Made Index announcement identify the Georgia plant as the IONIQ 5 assembly location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The careful wording is U.S.-market IONIQ 5 models are assembled in Georgia. Special variants, including performance-oriented versions, and vehicles for other markets may have different production arrangements.

10. BMW X5: Spartanburg, South Carolina

BMW is headquartered in Germany, but the 2026 BMW X5 is assembled at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. BMW’s U.S. X5 model page identifies the vehicle as U.S.-assembled.

Spartanburg is BMW’s global center for its X vehicles. BMW says the plant builds the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM families, has production capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles annually, and employs more than 11,000 people. The company describes the facility and its commitment to American manufacturing in its Spartanburg manufacturing overview.

The X5 is best described as a German luxury SUV assembled in South Carolina—not as a vehicle that is wholly American-made. The source material used here confirms its U.S. assembly but does not provide a row-specific domestic-content percentage to quote alongside the other nine vehicles. Its global parts mix can differ by powertrain and configuration.

What does made in America actually mean for a car?

There is no single number that captures a vehicle’s entire American footprint. For car shoppers, five separate questions are more useful:

  1. Where was final assembly completed? This is the plant and country where the vehicle became a finished car.
  2. How much of the parts content is domestic? AALA reports combined U.S. and Canadian content, not U.S.-only content.
  3. Where did the engine, electric motor, battery, and transmission originate? A vehicle can have U.S. final assembly but an imported engine, battery, or transmission.
  4. Who owns the brand? Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen, BMW, Lexus, and Acura have foreign corporate origins or foreign parent companies even when they employ people and operate factories in the United States.
  5. What is the broader economic footprint? U.S. assembly can involve American workers, suppliers, engineering, logistics, taxes, and capital investment. A parts percentage does not measure all of those factors.

The AALA data is particularly useful because it places parts content, assembly countries, engine origin, and transmission origin together. But it should not be turned into a claim that a vehicle is 70% American when the official figure actually means 70% U.S. and Canadian content.

Why do foreign automakers build cars in the United States?

Foreign automakers operate U.S. plants for several overlapping business and manufacturing reasons:

  • To serve the large U.S. market without shipping every finished vehicle across an ocean
  • To reduce transportation and logistics costs
  • To locate production near major North American suppliers
  • To use established U.S. manufacturing infrastructure and labor
  • To satisfy regional trade or content requirements
  • To build vehicles designed specifically for North American buyers
  • To support local battery, hybrid, and electric-vehicle production

These are industry-level reasons, not a claim that every automaker uses the same strategy or that U.S. assembly automatically makes a vehicle eligible for every federal or state incentive.

Does the badge tell you where a car was made?

No. A single foreign brand can sell vehicles assembled in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Europe, or elsewhere. Even the same model can be built in more than one country.

Assembly can change based on:

  • Trim level
  • Engine, hybrid, or battery-electric powertrain
  • Front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or another drivetrain
  • Model year
  • Destination market
  • Production allocation and inventory availability
  • Temporary plant changes or production interruptions

The Kia EV9 is a clear example because the manufacturer specifies that only selected trims are assembled in Georgia. Honda products, Hyundai electric vehicles, and Toyota hybrids also demonstrate why a model-level claim is not always enough.

More foreign-branded vehicles built in U.S. plants

The 10 vehicles above are not the entire list. These additional examples are useful, but their current production assignments should be checked before purchase because automakers regularly change plant allocations.

Honda and Acura

Honda’s U.S. manufacturing pages identify several additional North American products. The Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio builds the Accord and lists the Acura Integra among its products. East Liberty builds or lists the Acura MDX, Acura RDX, CR-V, and CR-V Hybrid. Alabama production includes the Odyssey, Passport, Pilot, and Ridgeline. Honda also identifies U.S. production of the Accord Hybrid and Civic Hatchback. See the Marysville, East Liberty, and Alabama plant pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toyota and Lexus

Toyota’s U.S.-assembled portfolio includes the Camry Hybrid in Kentucky; the Grand Highlander, Highlander, Sienna Hybrid, and Lexus TX in Indiana; the Tundra and Sequoia in Texas; and the Corolla in Mississippi. Toyota also identifies the RAV4 Hybrid among its Kentucky products. Because the company is adding and reallocating hybrid and battery-electric production, check its current Kentucky and Indiana plant pages for the latest assignment.

Kia

In addition to the EV9, Kia’s Georgia operation builds or has built the Telluride, Sorento, and Sportage. Kia’s own full-line brochure uses the important phrase select trims and says its U.S.-assembled vehicles use U.S. and globally sourced parts. Depending on current production allocation, the Georgia plant may also be associated with the EV6. Do not assume that every electrified version of a model shares the gasoline model’s assembly location. Kia’s current full-line brochure is the appropriate place to check the qualification.

Hyundai

Hyundai identifies the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 9, Santa Cruz, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Hybrid among its U.S.-assembled vehicles. The Alabama and Georgia plants do not necessarily build every trim or powertrain, so the exact vehicle still needs to be checked. Hyundai’s U.S. manufacturing overview is the starting point for current assignments.

Subaru

Subaru of Indiana Automotive identifies the Forester, Crosstrek, and Ascent as North American production models assembled in Lafayette, Indiana. Its production page provides the current model overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nissan and Infiniti

Nissan’s North American operations identify U.S. production of the Pathfinder, Rogue, Murano, Infiniti QX60, Altima, and Frontier, with production spread across plants including Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi. Nissan’s model allocations and plant plans have been changing, so consult its North American operations information and verify the specific vehicle.

How to verify the exact car you are buying

A general model page is not enough if assembly location matters to you. Use the following checklist before signing a purchase agreement.

1. Read the window sticker

The Monroney label normally identifies the final assembly point and provides domestic and foreign parts-content information. It may also identify engine and transmission or drivetrain origins, where applicable. Review the sticker for the exact vehicle in the dealer’s inventory rather than relying on a brochure for the model line.

2. Get the VIN

The VIN can help identify the vehicle’s assembly plant, although decoding methods vary by manufacturer and market. Use it as a vehicle-specific confirmation tool, not as a replacement for the window sticker’s parts-content disclosure. An OBD-II scanner may retrieve a VIN on some vehicles, but it cannot tell you the vehicle’s complete domestic-content percentage.

3. Ask for the stock number and configuration

Ask the dealer for the exact:

  • VIN
  • Window sticker
  • Assembly location
  • Model year
  • Trim
  • Engine, hybrid system, or battery configuration
  • Drive system

A dealer may have both U.S.-assembled and imported examples of what appears to be the same model in inventory.

4. Separate the model claim from the vehicle claim

The safest wording is: The model is assembled in the United States, although the exact assembly location and parts content can vary by configuration. That is more useful—and more accurate—than assuming every vehicle with the same nameplate has the same origin.

Why older foreign-car lists can be misleading

Older articles are useful starting points, but they can mix model years and treat a plant assignment as permanent. For example, a 2024 SlashGear list of foreign cars made in America included models such as the Acura TLX, Honda Accord, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Sorento, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Nissan Altima, Subaru Outback, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Atlas. Those examples require current verification before being presented as a 2026 production guide.

Older coverage also commonly misses five points:

  1. Final assembly is not total domestic manufacture. An Alabama- or Tennessee-assembled car can still use imported electronics, battery cells, engines, software, or other components.
  2. Trim differences matter. The EV9 is not uniformly U.S.-assembled across all versions.
  3. Electric and hybrid production has changed the landscape. The ID.4, IONIQ 5, EV9, and CX-50 Hybrid make a current list different from one dominated by older gasoline sedans.
  4. The same nameplate can move between plants. Model year, powertrain, and market destination can change the answer.
  5. Parts data is more informative than a generic plant list. NHTSA’s AALA table shows content percentages and powertrain origins alongside assembly countries.

Even rankings require context. Cars.com’s 2026 American-Made Index reported that 65% of the vehicles on its list came from foreign automakers, but that statistic describes that specific index and methodology—not all vehicles produced in the United States. Read Cars.com’s methodology and announcement.

Bottom line

A foreign badge and a foreign-built vehicle are not the same thing. The Volkswagen ID.4, Honda Ridgeline, Mazda CX-50, Lexus TX, Honda Odyssey, Acura MDX, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and BMW X5 all demonstrate that foreign-headquartered automakers operate substantial U.S. assembly plants.

For the most American manufacturing footprint among the listed examples, look beyond the badge and compare the AALA content figure, engine or motor origin, transmission origin, and final assembly plant. Before buying, verify the exact vehicle’s window sticker and VIN—especially when a model has multiple trims or powertrains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does U.S. assembly make a foreign car 100% American?

No. U.S. assembly means the vehicle was completed at an American plant. It can still contain imported parts, engines, motors, batteries, electronics, software, or other components. AALA percentages measure combined U.S. and Canadian parts content, not total American content.

Can two vehicles with the same model name be built in different countries?

Yes. Assembly can vary by trim, drivetrain, engine or battery configuration, model year, destination market, and production allocation. Check the exact vehicle’s window sticker and VIN rather than relying only on the model name.

Which vehicle on this list has the highest reported U.S./Canadian content?

The 2026 AALA data lists the Volkswagen ID.4 at 75% to 76% and the Honda Ridgeline at 75%, depending on configuration. Those are U.S./Canadian percentages, not U.S.-only percentages.

Does a U.S.-assembled vehicle automatically qualify for every EV tax credit or incentive?

No. Incentive eligibility is a separate question with its own current federal, state, battery, income, leasing, and vehicle requirements. Verify the applicable rules independently for the exact vehicle and purchase date.

The Bottom Line

The practical lesson: foreign brand and foreign-built are not synonyms. Use the exact car’s window sticker and VIN to confirm final assembly, then check the AALA data to understand its U.S./Canadian content and powertrain origins.
