The fastest car in this ranking is the YANGWANG U9 Xtreme: BYD says it reached 308.4 mph (496.22 km/h) at Germany’s ATP Papenburg test track on 14 September 2025. The claim is extraordinary, but it is not the same kind of evidence as a completed, independently verified two-way record. This list ranks production road-car candidates by their highest published speed figures and labels whether each figure is a target, simulation, single run or average.

“Sports car” here includes road-going hypercars, not race cars or experimental track studies. A top-speed figure is meaningful only with its context: the car’s configuration, the run format and who reports or verifies it can all change what the number establishes.

How this ranking works

The entries are ordered by the highest published figure associated with each car, not by a common verification standard. That means simulated projections and targets appear alongside reported runs, but they are identified as such and should not be mistaken for records. The candidate list draws on the 2026 AllTheTopTen ranking, updated to include BYD/YANGWANG’s later-reported U9 Xtreme result.

Production-car top-speed claims are also not interchangeable with FIA-homologated records. The FIA’s Category A record list uses defined record categories and distances; it is not a leaderboard of manufacturers’ maximum-speed claims for production cars. Road approval and production status matter too: a limited-run road car is still different from an experimental or track-only vehicle. Bugatti, for example, describes the Bolide as an experimental study and its over-500-km/h speed as simulated, so it is outside this list.

4 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h) Bugatti-reported 2019 run; one-way, not a two-way average
5 SSC Tuatara 282.9 mph Average reported by SSC for a January 2021 run
6 Koenigsegg Agera RS 277.9 mph Two-way average, 2017
7 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport 267.8 mph 2010 figure labeled verified by the secondary ranking; Bugatti separately reports a supervised 431.072 km/h run
8 Bugatti Chiron 261 mph Electronically limited standard-car speed, not an unrestricted record run

10 SSC Ultimate Aero 256.18 mph Auto Express figure; SSC gives 256.14 mph for its 2007 average

1. YANGWANG U9 Xtreme — 308.4 mph

BYD/YANGWANG says the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h (308.4 mph) at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 14 September 2025. The company announced the result on 22 September 2025 and calls the car the world’s fastest production car. It also says the model will be offered in a limited series of no more than 30 units. Those details make the claim relevant to a production-car ranking, but the cited announcement does not establish independent homologation of the result. See BYD/YANGWANG’s announcement.

2. Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut — 330 mph

The 330 mph figure is a simulation or claim, not a completed top-speed run. It is the highest number in this list, but it is not the fastest measured result. The 2026 ranking explicitly distinguishes it from cars with run figures.

3. Hennessey Venom F5 — 311 mph

Hennessey’s 311 mph is presented as a target, not as a completed, independently verified result. A target describes what a car is intended to reach; it should not be reported as a record. The distinction is noted in the secondary ranking.

4. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ — 304.773 mph

Bugatti reports that the Chiron Super Sport 300+ reached 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) in 2019 and calls it the first series-production car to exceed 300 mph. The run was one-way, so it is not directly comparable to a two-way average that accounts for opposing-direction runs. “Production-based” is more precise than implying every retail example was identical to the record car. Bugatti’s account is in its record-breaking brand history.

5. SSC Tuatara — 282.9 mph

SSC says the Tuatara averaged 282.9 mph in a January 2021 run at Kennedy Space Center. Because the cited account is the manufacturer’s own, attribute the figure to SSC rather than presenting it as an independent verification. See SSC’s account.

6. Koenigsegg Agera RS — 277.9 mph

The 2017 figure is a two-way average, according to the 2026 ranking. A two-way average is a different format from a single-direction peak: it helps account for differences between runs in opposite directions, but the published number still needs to be read with its source and record convention in mind.

7. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport — 267.8 mph

The secondary ranking gives the 2010 Veyron Super Sport figure as 267.8 mph and labels it verified. Bugatti separately says the car reached 431.072 km/h under Guinness World Records and TÜV supervision. Because those reported figures and conventions differ, they should not be casually treated as identical measures of the same configuration. See Bugatti’s record history and the ranking source.

8. Bugatti Chiron — 261 mph

This is the standard Chiron’s electronically limited speed, as reported by the secondary ranking. It is not an unrestricted maximum-speed record run, so it belongs in a published-speed comparison with that limitation made explicit.

9. Rimac Nevera — 258 mph

The 2026 ranking reports a 2022 figure of 258 mph and labels it verified. The available summary does not give a venue or run format for this entry, so the number should not be assigned a more specific verification description.

10. SSC Ultimate Aero — 256.18 mph

Auto Express reports 256.18 mph for the Ultimate Aero, while SSC’s own page gives a 256.14 mph average for its 2007 result. The small difference is a source discrepancy; the useful takeaway is that the figures are approximately 256 mph, not that one hundredth of a mile per hour is settled. See Auto Express and SSC.

Which figures are the strongest evidence?

These entries do not all answer the same question. The U9 Xtreme has the highest reported run in the ranking, but the report is from its manufacturer. The Chiron Super Sport 300+ figure is a manufacturer-reported one-way run. SSC attributes the Tuatara’s 282.9 mph to an average, while the Agera RS figure is described as a two-way average by the secondary ranking. Meanwhile, the Jesko Absolut’s 330 mph is simulated or claimed, and the Venom F5’s 311 mph is a target.

For readers looking for the highest published number, the ranking above is useful. For a “fastest verified” comparison, the entries need to be filtered by a consistent verification standard and comparable run format. The available sources do not establish that every car here has been tested or certified under one shared protocol.

Why top-speed rankings are hard to compare

Peak speed versus average speed

A one-way peak records the speed reached in a single direction; a two-way average combines runs in opposite directions. Wind, gradient and other conditions can affect a single-direction result, so the formats should not be collapsed into a single category without explanation.

Claim, target and measured result

A projected speed, a manufacturer’s target and an achieved run are three different things. The Jesko Absolut and Venom F5 occupy the list because their published numbers are higher than the measured figures below them, not because those numbers have been demonstrated on a course.

Road cars, limited runs and record categories

“Production car” can encompass rare, limited-run vehicles, such as the U9 Xtreme’s announced series capped at 30 units. That does not make it comparable to a mass-market sports car in availability. Separately, FIA record categories have their own definitions and distances, so a production-car top-speed claim is not automatically an FIA record. The FIA’s Category A list illustrates the distinction.

What it takes to go this fast

Top speed is not just a horsepower contest. At extreme speeds, a car needs enough power to overcome aerodynamic drag, stability and high-speed control, mechanical reliability, and compliance with the conditions under which it is driven. A 2026 FastestLaps overview identifies power, low drag, high-speed stability, reliability and environmental compliance as factors in production-car speed records. Those general factors explain the engineering challenge, but they do not verify a particular model’s published figure.

Hennessey’s earlier Venom GT result offers another example of the distinctions involved: the company describes a 270.49 mph figure in 2014 as a verified record. That is a separate model and claim from the Venom F5’s 311 mph target. See Hennessey’s Venom GT account.
