You can help your electric car go farther on a charge by driving smoothly, managing cabin climate, checking tire pressure and planning charging stops around the trip. The benefit of each change depends on your vehicle, weather, route, speed and comfort needs; no single tip adds a guaranteed number of miles.

1. Ease off the speed

Driving faster generally uses more energy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends slowing down to improve efficiency, and Kia explains that aerodynamic drag rises rapidly as an EV’s speed increases. There is no universal “best” speed: traffic, road conditions, posted limits and your vehicle all matter. Choose a safe, legal pace rather than chasing a specific number.

2. Accelerate and slow down smoothly

Hard acceleration and abrupt braking tend to waste energy. Build speed progressively, leave enough space to anticipate traffic, and ease off the accelerator early when conditions allow. Smooth deceleration can also give regenerative braking a chance to recover some energy, though the amount depends on the car and situation.

These habits are not a reason to delay braking or compromise safety. Brake promptly when needed.

3. Use regenerative braking thoughtfully

Regenerative braking converts some of the vehicle’s motion back into electrical energy for the battery. It is not a one-for-one refund: energy is lost in conversion, and how much you recover varies with the vehicle, settings, speed and braking conditions. Kia notes that regeneration may be restricted during rapid deceleration, so anticipating stops is more useful than relying on hard braking to recharge.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary reports that net regenerative braking recovers about 22% of energy on the EPA combined city/highway drive cycle. That is a standardized drive-cycle result, not a promise of what an individual driver will recover.

4. Set tire pressure to your vehicle’s specification

Underinflated tires can hurt efficiency, but the right target is the pressure specified for your car—not a generic number from the internet or the maximum printed on a tire. Check the vehicle’s tire-pressure placard and owner’s manual, and follow any instructions about checking tires when cold. A pressure gauge can help you check accurately; it does not change the correct specification.

5. Remove cargo you do not need

Extra weight takes energy to move. Take out unnecessary items before a trip, but keep passengers, emergency supplies and safety equipment you need. The goal is to avoid carrying needless load, not to strip the car of useful or required gear.

6. Use heating and cooling efficiently

Cabin climate control draws energy, and cold-weather heating can put particular pressure on usable range. Set a comfortable temperature rather than heating or cooling the cabin more than necessary. Where your vehicle has them, heated seats or a heated steering wheel may use less energy than warming the whole cabin, according to Tesla’s Model 3 manual. Keep the cabin comfortable and windows clear; visibility and occupant safety come first.

7. Precondition while plugged in when your car supports it

Preconditioning prepares the cabin—and, on some vehicles, the battery—before you set off. If the feature is available, schedule it while the car is connected to power so that some of the energy needed to warm or cool the car can come from the outlet rather than the driving battery. Availability, controls and battery-preconditioning behavior vary by vehicle; consult the manual or in-car help for the exact setup.

8. Adjust expectations for weather

Low temperatures can challenge EV batteries, and heating the cabin adds another demand. The effect differs among vehicles: NREL identifies battery chemistry, thermal management, cabin heating, speed and driving behavior as factors. Hot weather and wind can also affect energy use. Covered parking may help in cold conditions when available, but weather effects cannot be reduced to one range adjustment that applies to every car.

9. Plan longer trips around your route and charging needs

Use your vehicle’s route planner when available, especially if it can account for charging stops and battery conditioning. On supported vehicles, routing to a fast charger can trigger battery preconditioning so the battery is better prepared to charge. Follow the route planner’s instructions and allow for weather, speed and other conditions that may change energy use.

Fast charging often slows as the battery’s state of charge rises. For a road trip, charge to the level needed for the next leg and a sensible arrival buffer; charging to 100% is not automatically the fastest choice. A longer leg, cold conditions or uncertainty about the next charger may justify charging more. The right stopping point depends on the route and car.

EPA: plug-in electric vehicle charging

10. Reduce avoidable drag and maintain the car

An unused roof rack adds aerodynamic drag, so remove it when practical. Keep up with the vehicle’s maintenance guidance as well: Tesla identifies wheel alignment and maintaining wheels and tires as relevant to efficiency. Follow the specifications in your own manual rather than making adjustments based on another model’s instructions.

What to prioritize first

  • For everyday driving, focus on a safe, steady pace and smooth acceleration and braking.
  • Before a longer trip, check tire pressure against the car’s specified value and remove cargo or rack equipment you do not need.
  • In cold or hot weather, use supported preconditioning while plugged in and manage climate settings without compromising comfort or visibility.
  • For a route with charging stops, use the car’s planner and charge for the next leg rather than treating a full battery as the default target.

Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual sums up the driving principle this way: “You can maximize your driving range using the same driving habits you use to conserve fuel in a gasoline-powered vehicle.”
