A lightweight trail-focused bike, a road-friendly older design and a touring-oriented model solve different problems; none removes the category’s trade-offs. These 10 U.S.-market candidates span small-displacement everyday use to more performance-leaning and pavement-capable options. Model years are noted because the available manufacturer listings range from 2025 through 2027.
How to choose a dual-sport for pavement and dirt
Dual-sports balance road equipment and manners against dirt-friendly weight, wheels, suspension and gearing. Before comparing engine sizes, estimate your actual pavement-to-trail split and consider seat height, loaded weight, fuel capacity and the kind of roads you ride. Manufacturer specifications are not a standardized cross-brand performance test, and the listed figures below do not establish which bike is fastest, most reliable or best off-road.
All prices below are U.S. manufacturer-listed base MSRPs where available, not out-the-door prices. Destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees and accessories may add to the purchase cost. Confirm the current model year, local inventory, specifications and applicable road-registration requirements with the manufacturer and your state before buying.

Those figures make it a candidate for riders prioritizing accessible, modestly sized use; they do not establish its performance in any particular riding conditions. Honda’s dual-sport lineup.

5. Honda CRF450RL — U.S. listing
Honda’s listed equipment includes a 450cc liquid-cooled Unicam single, wide-ratio six-speed gearbox and 49mm inverted Showa fork; Honda identifies it as street legal. Quick Recap
Match the shortlist to your riding priorities
- For a smaller-displacement starting point: look first at the XR150L’s published 149cc engine and basic equipment, then assess whether its size and capability meet your actual routes.
- For a 286cc Honda choice: compare the CRF300L’s published dimensions with the Rally’s touring-oriented equipment; check the LS’s current ergonomics rather than assuming a seat-height advantage.
- For larger-displacement, air-cooled options: the XR650L and DR650S both have manufacturer-listed 644cc air-cooled singles, but their available specification sets are not identical enough here for a complete head-to-head.
- For a more performance-leaning Honda specification: the CRF450RL’s listed engine, gearbox and fork are the distinguishing published details, while its $10,199 base MSRP plus destination places it above the other stated Honda prices.
- For Yamaha’s listed candidates: confirm current-year status and specifications directly; the cited lineup listings establish MSRP but not a complete comparison of their dimensions or equipment.
What to verify before buying
- Confirm the exact model year and trim on the manufacturer’s current U.S. page; the listings cited here span 2025, 2026 and 2027.
- Compare curb or wet weights only when the manufacturers use the same definition. Do not infer a weight ranking from a single model’s published figure.
- Check seat height, suspension travel, wheels and tires against your height, load and intended terrain. Specifications alone do not predict comfort or performance.
- Ask a local dealer for the destination charge, documentation and other fees, taxes, registration costs, inventory status and an itemized out-the-door quote.
- Verify road-registration and equipment requirements for your state and intended use; the model listings do not establish every local legal requirement.
- Match any rack, handguard or skid plate to the exact model year. Manufacturer-listed accessories and third-party listings are not interchangeable fitment guarantees.
