You can drive from Los Angeles to New York City in 10 days, but this is a fast cross-country trip—not a leisurely tour. A southern corridor through the Southwest, Texas, Tennessee and Appalachia offers a mix of desert scenery, historic cities and a mountain-road segment, with several days devoted mainly to driving. The day-by-day plan below is a practical framework, not a live-verified route or mileage schedule.

What a 10-day Los Angeles-to-New York drive involves

One commercial self-drive itinerary estimates the Los Angeles–New York distance at almost 4,500 kilometres and the non-stop drive at around 40 hours. Those are approximate source estimates, not a live navigation result; meals, fuel, traffic, overnight stops and sightseeing add substantial elapsed time. (DriveNow’s Los Angeles to New York Self-Drive Itinerary)

A separate published itinerary in the reverse direction covers approximately 2,800 miles in 10 days while including multiple cities and attractions. That figure belongs to that New York-to-Los Angeles itinerary; it is not a calculated distance for the route below. Together, the examples show why a 10-day coast-to-coast trip requires a corridor and disciplined stops. (Go2USA’s 10 Days Cross-Country itinerary)

The suggested sequence heads south and east through Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff area, Santa Fe, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville, Appalachia and one East Coast city before New York. It is an editorial planning scaffold, not a verified leg-by-leg routing calculation. Expect some long driving days; treat the scenic stops as short visits rather than full park days.

The 10-day itinerary

Day 1: Los Angeles to Las Vegas

Leave room for traffic getting out of Los Angeles and make Las Vegas the first overnight. Keep the day focused on reaching your stop rather than adding distant attractions.

Day 2: Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon South Rim and Flagstaff

This is the first major scenery day, with a meaningful detour to the Grand Canyon South Rim before an overnight around Flagstaff. Check the park’s current entry details and arrange lodging with the day’s driving in mind.

Day 3: Flagstaff to Santa Fe

Plan for a long eastbound drive. Albuquerque can be a brief stop if time allows, but avoid turning it into a second full visit. Santa Fe provides a distinct overnight and breaks up the route.

Day 4: Santa Fe to Amarillo

Cross New Mexico toward the Texas Panhandle. After the previous long day, keep the schedule relatively simple and arrive with time to rest.

Day 5: Amarillo to Oklahoma City

Use this as a transition day across the Panhandle and into Oklahoma. Avoid stacking far-off attractions onto the drive; the route is already moving steadily east.

Day 6: Oklahoma City to Memphis

This is another long transit day. Plan meal and rest breaks before setting out, and leave enough flexibility for traffic or delays rather than treating the drive as a fixed arrival-time promise.

Day 7: Memphis to Nashville

The shorter drive creates time for one city-focused visit. Choose one or two priorities in Memphis or Nashville instead of trying to explore both cities in depth on the same day.

Day 8: Nashville to an Appalachian overnight

Choose a stop such as Roanoke or the Shenandoah area based on season, the scenery you want and road access. If your plan uses a parkway or park road, check its current status before committing to the overnight.

Day 9: Appalachia to Philadelphia or Washington, DC

Pick one city, not both. Adding both creates more urban driving and leaves less time for the scenic stop. Your choice also determines the final day’s approach to New York.

Day 10: Philadelphia or Washington, DC to New York City

Allow for city-bound traffic, parking and, if applicable, rental-car return arrangements. Reaching New York on Day 10 does not also give you a full day to sightsee there.

How to keep the route workable

  • Protect time for the drive. Traffic, food, fuel, rest, weather and attraction queues all add time beyond an itinerary publisher’s non-stop estimate.
  • Limit detours. Keep the trip within a broad southern corridor; every major diversion takes time from a visit or pushes an overnight arrival later.
  • Choose the kind of trip you want. This framework prioritizes reaching New York in 10 days with brief scenic stops. For hikes, full park days or deeper city visits, add days or remove stops.
  • Check the one-way vehicle plan early. If you need a rental, confirm the provider’s availability, terms and any one-way arrangements before booking lodging around the itinerary. No specific provider or fee is established here.

Check park and road rules for your dates

National park access and requirements vary by park, road and date. The National Park Service advises visitors to check the relevant park website or NPS App for current details, including fees, reservations and timed entry. Check weather, construction, road conditions, alerts and permits as well. (National Park Service: Plan Your Visit)

Reservation policies are site-specific, so do not assume a rule from one park applies to another. For example, the NPS page last updated June 11, 2026, reported that no vehicle reservations were required for Going-to-the-Sun Road in 2026. That road is in Glacier National Park and is not part of this southern itinerary; its rule is not guidance for the stops listed here. (National Park Service: Going-to-the-Sun Road)

Is a southern route the right choice?

This plan is one possible balance of Southwest landscapes, recognizable cities and an Appalachian scenic segment. The available itinerary examples show different stop patterns, but do not establish comparative mileage for exact southern, central and northern routes. Without a route calculation for your dates, it would be misleading to call one objectively fastest or most scenic. Compare candidate routes by daily driving burden, seasonal weather and road access, site-specific reservation rules, and the mix of scenery, towns and cities.
