Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 2000s produced fast sedans by several very different recipes: BMW’s high-revving V10 M5, Mercedes-AMG’s supercharged E55, and Cadillac’s rear-drive CTS-V are among the era’s standouts. This is an editorial selection, not a strict quickest-to-slowest ranking: the cited period figures mix manufacturer claims, magazine estimates, and road-test results, so they are not directly comparable. The scope is notable performance sedans sold or tested during the decade; where a source is specific to a market or model year, that context is included.
How to read the performance figures
A 0–60 mph magazine test, a manufacturer’s 0–100 km/h claim, and a preliminary estimate answer different questions. They can vary with test conditions, vehicle specification, and measurement method. Each number below is attributed to its source and type rather than presented as a universal result.
10 crazy-fast sedans from the 2000s
1. BMW M5 (E39, 2000)
The E39 M5 brought 400 hp to a four-door sedan. In its 2000 road test, Motor Trend reported a 0–60 mph time of 4.7 seconds. That is a period publication result, not a guarantee for every car or condition, but it captures why the M5 was treated as a performance benchmark.
2. BMW M5 (E60, introduced 2005)
The E60 replaced the earlier car’s V8 with a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V10. BMW M’s retrospective gives it 507 hp and a 0–100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds; those are BMW-published figures, not an independent road-test result. BMW M says 19,523 sedans and 1,025 Touring models were built, out of 20,548 total. Touring is the wagon body style, not another sedan. For a separate market-specific reference, BMW Canada’s 2008 update for the 2009 model year lists 500 horsepower. These ratings should not be blended: they refer to different market and source contexts. BMW M’s E60 M5 history and BMW Canada’s 2009 product update provide those specifications.

3. Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG (2003 era)
The U.S.-market E55 AMG used a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 rated at 493 hp. In a first-drive account, Car and Driver called it the quickest production sedan at the time and gave a 0–60 mph estimate. In a separate 2003 comparison, the magazine reported 4.3 seconds to 60 mph and a quarter-mile of 12.5 seconds at 116 mph. Those comparison figures belong to that test context; they are not the estimate from the first-drive piece.
4. Audi RS6 (2003)
The Audi RS6 appeared alongside the M5, E55 AMG, and Jaguar S-Type R in Car and Driver’s 2003 comparison. It represented another high-performance luxury-sedan option for buyers willing to pay for a serious powertrain and chassis. The figures summarized here do not establish a comparable RS6 acceleration time, so none is assigned.

5. Cadillac CTS-V (2007)
Cadillac’s 2007 CTS-V paired a 6.0-liter LS2 V8 with rear-wheel drive in a four-door sedan. Its V8 was rated at 400 hp and 395 lb-ft. Cadillac’s press release claimed less than five seconds from 0–60 mph and a 163 mph top speed; those are manufacturer-published specifications, not magazine instrumented results. Cadillac’s 2007 CTS-V release identifies the body style, engine, output, and claimed performance.
6–10. The limits of a sourced top ten
The period sources establish the five candidates above, but they do not provide enough consistently sourced, sedan-specific evidence to responsibly name five additional cars and attach comparable performance claims. In particular, a retrospective’s E63 and E55 AMG wagon figures cannot be substituted for sedan results. A longer list without equivalent sourcing would create a false impression that all ten entries had been verified on the same basis.

Why these cars were fast in different ways
- High-revving naturally aspirated power: The E60 M5’s V10 delivered its power without a supercharger, distinguishing its approach from the E55 AMG.
- Supercharged torque: The E55 AMG’s 5.4-liter V8 used forced induction, and its separate first-drive and comparison coverage illustrates why estimates and test results must stay distinct.
- Rear-drive V8 performance: The CTS-V combined a large-displacement V8 with rear-wheel drive, while Cadillac’s release emphasized both acceleration and top speed.
- Luxury-sedan breadth: The RS6 and Jaguar S-Type R joined the M5 and E55 in period comparison coverage, showing that the fast-sedan field extended beyond one manufacturer or engineering formula.
What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The E39 M5’s 4.7-second 0–60 mph road-test result, BMW’s E60 4.7-second 0–100 km/h claim, and the E55’s 4.3-second 0–60 mph comparison result are not an apples-to-apples ranking. The E60 figure uses a different speed measure and comes from the manufacturer; the E39 and E55 figures come from different magazine contexts. Cadillac’s under-five-second claim is a threshold rather than an exact time. Those distinctions matter more than arranging the cars by digits that were produced under unlike conditions.
