These ten cars became controversial for different reasons: polarizing styling, compromised performance, safety disputes, or commercial failure. Their later appeal is just as varied, ranging from distinctive engineering and useful packaging to film and television fame. “Cult classic” is an informal label, not a measurable ranking, so this is a curated selection—not a claim that all ten have the same level or kind of following.
What makes a controversial car a cult classic?
A car can be criticized when it is new and remembered fondly later, but those are separate claims. Contemporary controversy may concern styling, value, engineering, safety, or a company’s collapse. Later recognition may come from enthusiasts, a distinctive design, or a prominent screen appearance. The sources available for these models do not provide a consistent measure of cult status, so the examples below distinguish the original criticism from the reasons each car remains memorable.
Cars remembered for daring or divisive design
AMC Pacer
The Pacer’s rounded, unusually broad shape made it a polarizing design. TIME points to a Hagerty Insurance poll about worst car designs as evidence of disputed styling, but the retrieved account does not establish the poll’s year, sample, or methodology. That makes it a sign of debate, not a measurement of the Pacer’s overall reputation or cult following. TIME’s look at famously unattractive cars supplies the retrospective framing.
Fiat Multipla
The Multipla paired controversial looks with unusually practical packaging: it seated six across two rows of three. Autocar notes that opinions on its design differed and that Fiat toned it down in 2004. Its enduring talking point is the tension between an unconventional exterior and a layout designed to make good use of cabin space. Autocar’s retrospective on controversial designs describes both.

Renault Avantime
The Avantime combined elements of a luxury car, coupe, and MPV in a shape that was difficult to categorize. Autocar reports that fewer than 9,000 were sold during its two years on sale; the figure is attributed to that retrospective, whose publication year is not confirmed in the retrieved page. Its brief commercial run is part of the story, but does not by itself prove later collector demand. Autocar presents it as a striking design that struggled to find an audience.
Chrysler PT Cruiser
The PT Cruiser’s high roof and retro styling made it instantly recognizable, but its looks were not universally welcomed. Autocar also criticizes its safety marks and the refinement of the convertible version. Those are different kinds of criticism: one is a design reaction, the other concerns how a particular version performed against expectations. Calling it a legend or a lemon is editorial judgment, not a settled verdict. Autocar’s retrospective covers both sides.

Plymouth Prowler
The Prowler translated hot-rod imagery into a factory-built car, with exposed front wheels and a dramatic, narrow-bodied profile. That design was its main distinction, while Autocar identifies its V6, visibility, and practicality as sources of criticism. The car’s case is therefore less about a single flaw than a gap between its hot-rod appearance and its everyday compromises. Autocar discusses the styling and trade-offs; any output figure should be checked against the exact model year and market before comparison.
Cars whose reputations were shaped by more than styling
Ford Edsel
The Edsel’s failure cannot be reduced to its grille or any one design detail. TIME attributes its reputation to a mix of styling, price, recession-era timing, inflated expectations, and media reaction. The Museum of Failure likewise includes it among vehicle failures. Those factors matter together: a controversial design became part of a much larger story about a launch that could not meet the expectations surrounding it. TIME discusses the reputation, while the Museum of Failure’s vehicle-failures page places it in a broader failure context.

DeLorean DMC-12
The DMC-12 was visually distinctive, with a stainless-steel body and gull-wing doors, and it had a Giorgetto Giugiaro design, a rear-mounted V6, and Lotus engineering input. Yet its performance drew criticism, quality problems damaged the ownership proposition, and the company collapsed. The car’s later recognition is also inseparable from its film association, which helped give it a cultural afterlife beyond its original market reception. Autocar details the design and shortcomings; TIME discusses the film connection. Autocar; TIME; Museum of Failure.
Chevrolet Corvair
The Corvair’s rear-engine layout became central to a high-profile safety controversy associated with Ralph Nader’s book Unsafe at Any Speed. That controversy is not interchangeable with arguments about whether a car looked odd or sold poorly: it concerns safety and public scrutiny. The available retrospective account establishes the controversy’s place in the Corvair’s reputation, but does not provide enough primary technical or regulatory evidence to make a detailed claim here about crash risk or what the manufacturer knew. TIME’s account provides the retrospective context; Ralph Nader’s book page identifies the work associated with the debate.

Pontiac Fiero
The Fiero was a mid-engined two-seater built around a spaceframe with plastic body panels—an unusual formula for a mass-market American car. Autocar describes criticism of its development, performance, and handling, along with early fire incidents. Because the source is a retrospective feature rather than a primary safety record, the fire history should not be treated here as a quantified risk or a complete account of its causes. Its engineering concept remains distinct from the criticism of how the car drove and was developed. Autocar.

Pontiac Aztek
The Aztek was strongly criticized for its styling, but Autocar also describes it as roomy and practical. Its later cultural recognition is tied to its appearance in Breaking Bad, as the Museum of Failure notes. A television role can keep a car in public memory; it is not evidence by itself of measured sales growth, collector value, or universal affection. Autocar; Museum of Failure.

Why these ten do not share one kind of controversy
These cars are best understood as different cases rather than entries in a single “worst to best” scale. The Pacer, Multipla, Avantime, PT Cruiser, and Prowler invite arguments about taste and packaging. The Edsel is remembered through the collision of design, expectations, pricing, and economic timing. The Corvair’s controversy concerns safety debate; the Fiero’s includes performance and reported early fires. The DeLorean and Aztek show how cultural visibility can extend a car’s life in public memory, while the Aztek and Multipla also had practical merits that styling criticism can obscure.
That variety is why “cult classic” should be read as a loose description of lasting interest, not a standardized status or proof of market value. A remembered design, a disputed reputation, and an active collector following are related possibilities, but they are not the same thing.
