10 Classic BMW Motorcycles Collectors Dream About

From the R32’s boxer-and-shaft-drive foundation to the R90 S, R80 G/S and K1, these classic BMWs attract collectors for very different reasons.

These ten BMW motorcycles stand out for the engineering, design, competition history, and influence that have made them desirable to collectors. They are not a value ranking: a scarce prewar machine, a familiar postwar twin, and a later technological landmark can appeal for very different reasons—and none is a guaranteed investment.

How to read this collector shortlist

The list spans BMW’s motorcycle history rather than ranking bikes by price. Its entries include early boxer pioneers, sporting twins, an influential travel enduro, and a technology-led K-series model. Historical importance is only one part of ownership: originality, restoration quality, parts support, specialist knowledge, and whether you want to ride or display the bike all matter.

BMW Group’s centenary history documents several of the engineering milestones below. For model-specific details, BMW Group Classic provides a historic model catalogue.

10 classic BMW motorcycles with collector appeal

1. BMW R32 (1923)

The R32 established the layout most closely associated with BMW motorcycles: a boxer engine paired with shaft drive. BMW says its 198 cc engine produced 6.35 kW (8.5 hp), with a stated top speed of 100 km/h. Its flange-mounted gearbox and solid shaft drive were notable design choices, and BMW highlights the shaft drive’s low maintenance on rough roads.

Its importance is clear; practical ownership is another matter. A collector interviewed by Motorcycle Classics reported historical examples of 1923–1926 R32s at $80,000–$130,000. Those are dated figures from that article, whose publication date is not stated in the available page extract—not current appraisals.

2. BMW R37 (1925)

The R37 developed the R32’s chassis technology and design but used a different engine. BMW credits engineer Rudolf Schleicher with the model; its 16 hp powerplant delivered nearly twice the R32’s output. That combination makes the R37 a useful early marker of BMW’s move from a foundational design toward more performance-oriented machines.

3. BMW R69S (1960–1969)

The R69S is a postwar sport twin with a strong following among collectors who know the period well. CLASSIC.COM describes it as a sportier derivative of the R69, with a higher compression ratio and more power. A collector interviewed by Motorcycle Classics points to the R69S as a model a veteran BMW enthusiast might consider among the most collectible early postwar machines.

Its appeal illustrates why familiarity can matter alongside rarity: a bike with an established enthusiast base may be easier to research and discuss with other owners than a rarer prewar model. Individual condition remains decisive; CLASSIC.COM notes that value depends on vehicle-specific factors, including condition, and its marketplace information changes over time.

4. BMW R90 S (1973)

BMW calls the R90 S its first superbike. The 898 cc twin produced 49 kW (67 hp), with a stated top speed of 200 km/h. Its sporting specification was matched by distinctive paint: Smoke Silver was offered initially, followed a year later by Daytona Orange.

The model also has competition credentials. BMW records a 1976 Production TT class victory and Steve McLaughlin’s Daytona 200 win. Collector Mac Kirkpatrick told Motorcycle Classics, “I think the BMW R90S is the most collectible, hands down.” That is one collector’s view, not a universal ranking; he also cited production numbers and parts availability as reasons the R90S can be practical to own compared with scarcer machines.

5. BMW R80 G/S (1980)

The R80 G/S helped establish the large travel-enduro category. BMW explains the initials as Gelände/Straße (“offroad/road”) and gives the original model a 797 cc engine producing 37 kW (50 hp), with a weight of 186 kilograms. BMW says, “The R 80 G/S was to spawn an entire model family.”

Its significance is not simply that it could leave paved roads; it helped define a versatile long-distance motorcycle format that became a major part of BMW’s identity. For collectors, that influence is a separate reason to value the model beyond its specification sheet.

6. BMW R100 GS (1988)

The R100 GS extended BMW’s large GS line as riders sought more performance and torque. BMW identifies the Paralever swing arm as a key technical introduction on the series. It is a natural choice for collectors interested in the evolution of the travel enduro rather than only the original R80 G/S.

7. BMW K1 (1988)

The K1 marked a sharp visual and technical departure from the classic boxer twins. BMW describes its full-fairing concept and partially covered front wheel as an aerodynamic milestone. It was the first BMW series motorcycle with four-valve technology and, according to BMW, the first series motorcycle worldwide with digital engine electronics.

Collectors drawn to engineering transitions may find the K1 more compelling than a conventional airhead: its significance lies in how visibly it represented a different design direction for BMW.

8. BMW R42

The R42 is one of several 1920s BMW models that collector Peter Nettesheim identifies as capable of commanding high prices. Motorcycle Classics reported historical examples of R42s at $40,000 and up, alongside the R47, R52, and R62. The article’s publication date is not stated in the available page extract, so these figures should be treated as historical context rather than today’s market guidance.

9. BMW R47

Nettesheim also names the R47 among the 1920s BMWs with strong collector demand. Its place on this shortlist reflects the appeal of BMW’s early motorcycles as a group, not a claim that it is more valuable or rarer than the other models named here. For a specific machine, provenance, completeness, and the quality of any restoration deserve close examination.

10. BMW R100 RS

The R100 RS belongs on a design-focused shortlist because of its connection to designer Hans Muth and its fully faired sporting form. A book catalog entry identifies a volume about the R100 RS that includes an interview with Muth, supporting its cultural and design interest. Consult BMW Group Classic’s catalogue for model details; the historical source material cited here does not establish an exact production history or specifications for this entry.

What drives collector interest—and what a buyer should verify

“Collectible” does not mean “most expensive.” The R32’s historical role, the R90 S’s competition record and styling, the R80 G/S’s influence, and the K1’s technology each offer a different basis for interest. Scarcity can raise the stakes, but it can also make parts and specialist help harder to find. A more familiar model may be easier to research and use, even if it is less rare.

  • Originality and condition: Check whether major components, paint, and finishes are original, and distinguish a documented restoration from a cosmetic refresh.
  • Parts and expertise: Ask what parts are available for the specific model and identify a mechanic or marque specialist before buying. Motorcycle Classics notes that classic BMW specialists are relatively few and that owner networks can be valuable.
  • Intended use: A display machine, a restoration project, and a motorcycle you plan to ride place different demands on mechanical condition and completeness.
  • Evidence for price: Compare recent, like-for-like sales where possible. The older Motorcycle Classics figures below are historical examples attributed to Peter Nettesheim, not current price guidance.
Motorcycle Classics historical example Reported figure Qualification
BMW R32, 1923–1926 $80,000–$130,000 Examples reported by Peter Nettesheim; article publication date not stated in the available page extract.

BMW R42, R47, R52, and R62, 1920s $40,000 and up for some models Historical range reported by Peter Nettesheim; model and condition affect the figure.
Plunger twins, 1950–1954 About $8,000–$18,000 Historical range reported by Peter Nettesheim.

Where to research a specific BMW

Start with BMW Group Classic’s model catalogue to explore historic models and specifications. BMW Group says its historical online overviews contain short information on model series, body variants, and engines. Its archive includes publications such as brochures, workshop literature, on-board literature, and specialist books; check what is available for the exact model before relying on a particular document.

For a prospective purchase, pair manufacturer information with inspection of the individual motorcycle and dated sale evidence. A model’s reputation cannot establish the authenticity or condition of the example in front of you.
