This editorial selection spans the race’s prewar roots through the modern prototype era, weighing landmark results, engineering significance and lasting recognition. It includes both outright winners and cars whose importance lies in what they changed.
How this ranking works
Le Mans history is not a story of one make dominating forever. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) describes successive leading eras for Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Ferrari and Ford, Matra, Porsche and Audi. The cars below are ranked as a considered cross-era selection, not by an official ACO scoring system. Race results, technical influence and historical recognition all count.
The 10 classic Le Mans cars
-
Bentley 3 Litre — 1924
The Bentley 3 Litre won the 24 Hours in 1924, making it a fitting starting point for a list that reaches across a century of racing. It represents the event’s early years, when surviving the full day and night was as central to the challenge as outright speed. The ACO identifies this car as the 1924-winning Bentley in its centenary exhibition.
-
Ferrari 166MM — 1949
The 166MM was the car associated with Ferrari’s maiden Le Mans victory, according to ACO anniversary coverage. That win established the marque’s place in the race’s postwar history and began a long association between Ferrari and endurance competition.

The cited ACO material supports Jaguar’s period prominence, but does not specify the C-type’s individual Le Mans results.
-
Ferrari 250 P — 1963
The Ferrari 250 P is an engineering milestone: ACO history identifies it as the first rear-engined car to win Le Mans. Its significance is not just the result, but the direction it signalled for racing-car design. The “first” claim applies to the 250 P and its 1963 victory, rather than to Ferrari or rear-engined cars generally.

Its place on this list rests on a defining outright result and its lasting status as a Le Mans emblem. Ford’s success also marks one of the distinct manufacturer-led chapters in the race’s history.
-
Porsche 917K — 1970–71
The 917K delivered Porsche its first overall Le Mans victory in 1970. In 1971, it set the race distance record at 5,335.31 km, according to the ACO; that mark stood until 2010. Its combination of major results and a record that endured for decades makes the 917 a centerpiece of any cross-era selection.

The MS670 is included here as a representative of Matra’s place in that era, when the French marque became part of Le Mans’s succession of major contenders. The cited ACO material establishes Matra’s prominence, but does not confirm a specific MS670 result.

Mazda 787B — 1991

Those results made it the defining car of Audi’s period of dominance and a natural endpoint for a list moving from early endurance racers to modern prototypes. The ACO reported 13 Audi victories from 2000 through 2014 in its 2018 press kit; that figure describes the period covered by that dated document, not a current total.

What makes a Le Mans car a classic?
A Le Mans car earns lasting recognition in more than one way. A victory can make it a landmark; an engineering step can influence what follows; a record can outlast the competition that set it. The ACO’s own account describes the event as a history of innovation and says, “The quest for performance has always embraced reliability and safety.” Its centenary exhibition illustrated that breadth with 80 cars, including 59 outright winners—a count for that temporary exhibition, not the full race archive.
That is why this selection includes cars whose strongest claim is a result, such as the GT40 Mk II, alongside cars remembered for a technical milestone, such as the Ferrari 250 P, and a record-holder, the Porsche 917K. “Classic” here spans prewar-era history, postwar winners and later prototypes rather than one narrowly defined age of racing.
