10 Cheap Sports Cars You May Find for Under $5,000

A $5,000 cap can turn up sports-car listings, but condition matters more than the badge. Here are 10 models to search for and what to verify before buying.

You can find sports cars advertised for less than $5,000 in the U.S., but that budget does not guarantee a clean, road-ready car—or even a nearby choice. Treat this as a shortlist of models to search, not a promise that ten sorted examples are routinely available. Check each car’s condition, title, rust, maintenance history and immediate repair needs, and leave room in your budget beyond the purchase price.

The clearest current listing evidence is for the Mazda MX-5 Miata; the BMW Z3 has a 2025 fair-condition valuation near the cap. Other candidates are credible search leads, but their actual availability under $5,000 depends on your area and the specific car.

What “under $5,000” means in practice

Listings do exist, but a low asking price is only the starting point. When checked on October 4, 2026, Edmunds displayed four nationwide Miata listings below $5,000, including a 2000 car at $4,750 with 152,976 miles and a 1994 car at $4,995 with 217,457 miles. These are individual listings, not a representative survey of the market, and the cars were in different states. Edmunds’ Miata listings asks shoppers to enter a ZIP code for local results.

Hagerty’s March 11, 2025 valuation for a 1996 BMW Z3 puts fair condition at $4,900 and good condition at $9,900. Those are valuation estimates, not dealer asking prices; the report also adjusts its figures by $2,000 for a removable hardtop and by -15% for an automatic transmission. The gap illustrates why condition and specification matter as much as the model name. Read Hagerty’s Z3 valuation report.

  • Opening Doors: The model features opening doors that allow you to admire the intricate interior detailing.
  • Pull-Back Action: Engaging the pull-back mechanism enables this toy car to zip across smooth surfaces.
  • Vibrant Color: Showcasing a rich white hue, this miniature captures the sleek and stylish design of the full-size McLaren.
  • Compact Size: Measuring approximately 5 inches in length, this model is perfectly sized for display or playtime.

Use the ten models below as leads. The first two have specific price or valuation evidence in this budget range; the rest are options to investigate locally, not verified nationwide bargains. A guide from CarCody likewise cautions that a sub-$5,000 asking price does not necessarily buy a sorted, reliable car. CarCody’s used sports-car guide.

10 sports cars to search for under $5,000

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata — strongest listing evidence

The Miata is the best-supported starting point in this shortlist: Edmunds showed four nationwide examples under $5,000 on October 4, 2026. One was a 2000 MX-5 Miata LS convertible listed at $4,750 with 152,976 miles in Bonneau, South Carolina; another was a 1994 base convertible at $4,995 with 217,457 miles in Bridgeport, Ohio. The same page also displayed a 2006 Touring at $4,900 with mileage not supplied and a 2011 Sport at $4,950 with 107,000 miles. Listings change, so confirm that any car is still available and inspect its condition before treating the price as a real opportunity. See the live Edmunds search.

Hagerty’s report on the 1990–1998 generation describes rear-wheel drive and says the original 1.6-liter engine made 120 hp. It also notes power-window issues and says timing belts should be changed every five years or 60,000 miles. Its July 16, 2025 report states: “With a modicum of care, Miatas are capable of high mileage and reliable long term service.” That is Hagerty’s general assessment, not a guarantee about any particular high-mileage car. Read Hagerty’s Miata valuation report.

  • Realistic Replica: This 1:36 scale die-cast metal model car is a detailed miniature replica of the iconic McLaren 720s supercar.

It is a two-seat roadster, so check that you fit comfortably and can live with its limited cargo space. Ask for evidence of timing-belt service and inspect carefully for rust and deferred maintenance.

2. BMW Z3 — possible at the cap in fair condition

Hagerty’s March 2025 valuation places a 1996 Z3 in fair condition at $4,900, but its good-condition estimate is $9,900. That makes a sub-$5,000 Z3 plausible as a fair-condition car, not evidence that tidy examples are generally offered at that price. Treat the valuation as a comparison point, not a listing. Verify the individual car’s condition, history and likely repair needs before buying. Hagerty’s 1996 Z3 valuation report.

3. Ford Mustang V6 — a search lead for a coupe with more room

A used V6 Mustang is among the candidates named in CarCody’s guide. Search by year, condition and local asking price rather than assuming that every generation or trim falls below the cap. Compare the specific car’s title, maintenance records, rust and repair needs; the available evidence here does not establish a typical under-$5,000 price for a particular Mustang year.

4. Chevrolet Camaro — investigate the individual car

CarCody names the Camaro as a candidate, but a model name alone cannot tell you whether a car near this budget is sound. Check for accident repairs, corrosion, title issues and signs of deferred maintenance, and compare the asking price with the work a mechanic identifies.

5. Pontiac Firebird — a related local-search option

The Firebird also appears in CarCody’s candidate list. Treat it as a local deal or project-car possibility rather than a reliably available bargain: the evidence does not establish current under-$5,000 inventory or a model-specific price range. Inspect the particular car and verify its paperwork before committing.

6. Mitsubishi Eclipse — check year, condition and specification

CarCody includes the Eclipse among its suggested used-car leads. Because no specific year or current under-$5,000 listing evidence is established here, compare actual local examples rather than relying on a broad model label. Prioritize maintenance records and a thorough mechanical inspection.

7. Pontiac Solstice — surfaced in a budget RWD search

The Solstice appeared on iSeeCars’ used rear-wheel-drive sports-car search page for cars under $5,000. That makes it worth checking in current local inventory, but a search page is not proof that a suitable example is available near you or that a listed car is in good condition. Check iSeeCars’ under-$5,000 RWD search.

8. Nissan 350Z — verify the price against the car’s condition

The 350Z also surfaced on that iSeeCars search page. Use it as a lead to investigate, not as evidence of a typical market price. Check mileage, service history, title status and the results of an independent inspection before deciding whether a low asking price is worthwhile. Browse the iSeeCars search page.

9. Toyota Celica — worth searching locally, not price-verified here

CarCody names the Celica as a possible budget sports-car search. The available evidence does not independently establish current sub-$5,000 listings for it. If you find one, judge its actual condition and records rather than assuming a low price means it needs only minor work.

10. Honda Prelude — a local-search lead

The Prelude is another model named by CarCody, but current under-$5,000 listing evidence was not established here. Look for documented maintenance, inspect for rust and accident repairs, and have a mechanic assess the car before purchase.

Why the Toyota MR2 Spyder is not a typical $5,000 pick

The MR2 is a two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car sold across three generations from 1984 to 2007. But the MR2 Spyder’s CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark was $12,939 in the page view checked in 2026, and CLASSIC.COM says actual value depends on condition. It is a model to watch for an unusual local deal or project—not one to count on finding in ordinary usable condition under $5,000. A historical low sale is not a guarantee of a current budget-priced car. See CLASSIC.COM’s Toyota MR2 market page.

How to choose between candidates

At this price, the best fit is the car you can find nearby in the best verifiable condition—not necessarily the one with the most famous badge. Compare these factors before narrowing your search:

  • Local availability: Check current listings using your ZIP code. A nationwide result hundreds of miles away may not be a practical buy.
  • Body style and space: Roadsters such as the Miata and Z3 are two-seat convertibles; make sure the seating and cargo capacity suit how you will use the car.
  • Condition and rust: Look underneath and around structural areas for corrosion, and check for poor-quality accident repairs.
  • Mileage and records: Mileage is context, not a condition report. Seek service records and ask what work is overdue.
  • Title and history: Confirm the title status and VIN history, and make sure the seller’s paperwork matches the vehicle.
  • Use case: Decide whether you need a dependable daily driver or are willing to take on a project. The asking price alone cannot answer that.
  • Ownership costs: Get an insurance quote and ask a mechanic to identify likely immediate work. No comparable repair-cost figures are established across these ten models, so do not assume they share a repair budget.

Pre-purchase checks before you hand over the money

  1. Confirm the listing and paperwork. Verify the car is still for sale, inspect the title, and match the VIN on the vehicle to the documents and history information.
  2. Ask for maintenance evidence. Request records and ask the seller what is known about overdue servicing, previous damage and repairs.
  3. Inspect the car in person. Check for rust, signs of accident repair and obvious mechanical problems. If you are not equipped to assess it, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
  4. Scan for diagnostic codes if useful. A generic OBD-II code reader can provide a preliminary clue, but it cannot establish that a car is mechanically sound or replace a professional inspection.
  5. Price the whole decision, not just the sale. Account for the immediate work identified by an inspection and your insurance quote before deciding whether the car fits your budget.

Market figures are clues, not guarantees

Hagerty’s report for the 1990–1998 Miata generation recorded a lowest sale of $1,651 and a most recent sale of $9,660 in its dataset; the report was published July 16, 2025. Those are historical transactions, not a promise that you can buy a suitable car at either figure today. Hagerty’s Miata report.

Likewise, listings, valuation estimates, search results and past sale prices describe different things. Check the current local listing, then let the specific car’s condition and a professional inspection guide your decision.
