The BMW B58 is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six introduced in 2015, and it has earned a strong reputation among owners and enthusiasts. But “most reliable” is a reputation-led description, not a proven ranking: there is no comprehensive, controlled study establishing it as BMW’s most reliable modern engine. The cars below are representative B58 applications, not a reliability ranking; exact engine fitment depends on model year, market and vehicle configuration.
What is BMW’s most reliable modern engine?
The B58 is often named as a reliability favorite among BMW’s modern engines. BMW describes it as part of a modular engine strategy, with features including integrated indirect charge-air cooling and a heat-management module. Those design details—and the B58 name itself—do not guarantee identical hardware or service requirements across every revision. Check a specific vehicle’s VIN and authoritative vehicle records to confirm its engine variant.
A 2025 UK dataset from BMWengines.uk counted 540 B58B30 enquiries, the lowest enquiry volume among the major BMW engines in that publisher’s comparison. These are the publisher’s enquiry counts, not a population-adjusted failure rate: they do not establish how likely an individual B58 is to fail. BMW’s 2019 press material gave a broad 335–503 hp range for its 3.0-litre inline-six across versions in the lineup; that historical range is not the specification for every B58-equipped car. BMW also cited a WardsAuto award test of a 335-hp B58 in an X5, which is an award statement, not long-term reliability evidence.
Which cars use the B58?
These ten representative model families have been reported with B58 applications. Fitment varies by year, market, body style and configuration, so the model name alone is not proof that a particular car has the engine.

BMW M240i
Some M240i applications, including earlier F22 coupes, use the B58. Verify the year, market and VIN rather than assuming every M240i has the same engine revision.

BMW 340i and M340i
Both model names appear among reported B58 applications. The 340i and M340i are distinct model generations and specifications; confirm the exact car’s engine and build date.

BMW X3 M40i
Some X3 M40i versions use the B58. The SUV’s drivetrain, model year and engine revision affect the individual vehicle’s specification.

Toyota GR Supra 3.0
The GR Supra 3.0 is the non-BMW entry on this list and is reported with a B58 application. Confirm the particular car’s specification and market rather than relying on the badge alone.
How reliable is a B58-equipped car?
The B58’s favorable reputation is based largely on owner experience and service history, rather than a published study comparing failure rates across equivalent vehicle populations. A specialist buyer guide flags coolant hose fittings and direct-injection carbon accumulation as possible inspection concerns. That does not mean either issue is inevitable, and the available information does not establish a failure rate for them.
Engine reputation is only one part of a used-car decision. Maintenance history, mileage, modifications, previous use, accident history and the condition of the rest of the vehicle can matter as much as the engine family. The evidence does not support naming a definitive “best year” or ranking these ten models by reliability.

How to choose among the ten cars
Start with the type of vehicle that suits your needs, then compare the actual examples you can verify. The B58 is a shared engine family; the rest of each car is not shared.
- Choose the body style and use case: compact coupe, sport sedan, executive sedan, SUV, roadster or two-seat sports coupe.
- Compare exact specifications: model year, engine revision, market and drivetrain. Ask for the VIN and verify the production date and engine variant in authoritative records.
- Assess the whole vehicle: review service records, mileage, modifications, prior use and accident history, and consider the condition of the transmission, electronics and other systems.
- Check current records: use the relevant manufacturer or regulator lookup for applicable recalls and service campaigns; there is no single recall or campaign established for every B58 vehicle.
- Arrange an independent inspection: have a qualified professional assess the specific car before purchase, including the reported coolant-fitting and carbon-accumulation considerations where relevant.
No numeric reliability ordering among these models is justified. A well-documented, carefully maintained example may be a better choice than a more desirable model with an uncertain history; decide based on the particular car, not the engine’s reputation alone.
