The newer-car figures are Edmunds’ 2025 model-year starting prices, including destination. They are historical reference prices, not 2026 quotes. Used-car prices vary with mileage, trim, condition, and location.
Set a real out-the-door ceiling before shopping. Leave room for taxes, registration, insurance, tires, a pre-purchase inspection, and any deferred maintenance; the cited sources do not provide a comparable total-cost estimate. These are options to investigate, not guarantees of reliability, value, or suitability outside the US.
Used enthusiast cars in Edmunds’ under-$25,000 guide
1. BMW 2 Series (2015–2018), especially M235i or M240i
The M235i and later M240i offer the more powerful versions, with output cited from 320 to 335 hp. Edmunds highlights balanced handling and long-distance comfort, while noting that the rear seats are small. Earlier M235i examples may be easier to find within the guide’s budget band. A premium coupe or convertible feel comes with the usual need to judge each used car by its history and condition.

2. Chevrolet Corvette C6 (2008–2013)

4. Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86 (2017–2020)

One 2026 reference offers a current-model-year point of comparison, but not a like-for-like price guarantee. Car and Driver’s ranking page displayed starting figures of $31,665 for the 2026 Miata, $32,695 for the 2026 GR86, and $37,055 for the 2026 BRZ when accessed October 7, 2026. Those are the page’s figures and may differ from manufacturer pricing or dealer transaction prices. Mazda’s 2026 release lists 181 hp and 151 lb-ft for the Miata, and a US destination and handling charge of $1,315 (or $1,360 in Alaska), effective August 11, 2026; verify current trim pricing and charges before purchase.

Choose by the kind of driving you want
- For nimble handling and open-air driving: Start with the Miata if two seats and a compact cabin work for you.
- For a rear-drive coupe: Compare the BRZ/86 family for balance and modest power, or consider the Mustang EcoBoost for substantially more power and torque in the cited 2025 configuration.
- For everyday practicality: The GTI supplies four doors and hatchback cargo space; the Hornet GT adds standard AWD and SUV utility.
- For premium comfort or much higher output in a used car: The BMW M235i/M240i and Corvette C6 are compelling on paper, but age, service records, and individual condition matter especially much.
Horsepower alone is a poor way to choose. Think about where you drive, whether you need rear seats, which transmission you want, and whether a firm, focused ride or daily comfort matters more. The cited lists do not establish a universal winner or a cheapest-to-own option.
How to assess a used enthusiast car
- Compare equivalent cars. Check model year, trim, transmission, mileage, equipment, and condition before comparing asking prices. A budget band in an editorial guide does not establish what a particular car should cost today.
- Ask for service records. Edmunds warns about deferred maintenance, neglect, and heavy modifications; its Corvette guidance specifically recommends looking for maintenance history.
- Arrange a qualified pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to evaluate the car’s mechanical condition and any modifications. A code reader may reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot establish overall condition and is not a substitute for an inspection.
- Check the fit and usability in person. Sit in the car, test the driving position, and confirm that passenger and cargo space meet your needs.
What “best” means in published rankings
Rankings answer different questions. iSeeCars’ 2026 used sports-car page names a 2020 Subaru BRZ as its pick under $25,000, a 2023 Miata under $30,000, a 2025 Miata under $35,000, and a 2023 Mustang coupe under $40,000. Those are iSeeCars’ rankings, not universal verdicts. The publisher says its methodology draws on research involving more than 12 million new and used vehicles and combines reliability, five-year value retention adjusted using US Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation data, and safety inputs incorporating NHTSA and IIHS information. Car and Driver presents editorial rankings, a different basis for comparison. Neither approach guarantees that a specific used car is sound or fairly priced.
