Edmunds’ February 23, 2026 U.S.-market comparison names ten 2026 SUVs with square profiles, spanning serious off-roaders, luxury models, family crossovers and an electric three-row SUV. It is an editorial shortlist—not a universal ranking—and the right choice depends on how you will use the vehicle.
What makes a boxy SUV a champion?
An upright profile can bring a distinctive look and a cabin shaped around useful passenger or cargo space, but it does not guarantee trail ability, easy handling or a comfortable ride. The ten models below come from Edmunds’ U.S. comparison of 2026 vehicles. Use the list as a starting point: compare seating and cargo needs, powertrain, local price and availability, ride comfort, fuel use or electric range, and the specific equipment that matters for your driving. Square styling alone is a poor way to choose an off-roader.
10 square-profile SUVs to consider for 2026
1. Jeep Wrangler: open-air off-road icon
The Wrangler stands out for off-road focus and open-air options, including removable roof choices and soft tops. Edmunds notes that slow steering and weak cabin insulation are compromises to consider if you spend more time commuting than exploring trails.

2. Mercedes-Benz G-Class: luxury with off-road roots
The G-Class combines a plush luxury positioning with a boxy shape and military roots. Edmunds cautions that cargo space is less generous than in some rivals, so check the luggage area against your real-world needs rather than assuming the large exterior means maximum utility.
3. Ford Bronco: broad choice for trail and open-air use
The Bronco is a close Wrangler rival, with a broad trim range and hardtop or soft-top choices. Edmunds identifies road refinement and fuel economy as tradeoffs. Trim and equipment matter: compare the exact version you want rather than treating every Bronco as equally trail-ready.
4. Toyota 4Runner: retro look, off-road-oriented trims
The 4Runner brings retro styling and off-road-focused trims. Edmunds flags limited rear-seat space and reduced cargo capacity in hybrid versions as practical considerations. If you need to carry both passengers and bulky gear, assess the specific powertrain and seating configuration.

5. Toyota Land Cruiser: a more comfort-minded alternative
Edmunds positions the Land Cruiser as a roomier, more comfortable and pricier alternative to the 4Runner, with a more efficient hybrid powertrain. Toyota’s Japanese-market Land Cruiser FJ is a separate model and should not be confused with the U.S. Land Cruiser in this 2026 shortlist.
6. Lexus GX: boxy luxury with a powerful turbo V6
The GX pairs luxury positioning with a boxy profile. Edmunds describes its turbocharged six-cylinder as more powerful than the Land Cruiser’s, with higher fuel use as the tradeoff. Compare the two on the balance you actually want between performance, comfort and running costs.
7. Hyundai Santa Fe: three rows in a family-oriented crossover
The Santa Fe offers three-row seating in a family-focused package. Edmunds notes that the rearmost seat is tight, so families who regularly use all three rows should try that seat with the intended passengers before deciding.

8. Honda Passport: spacious and comfortable, with a trail-capability ceiling
The Passport’s boxier redesign accompanies a comfortable, spacious cabin. Its TrailSport trim adds an off-road-oriented option, but Edmunds says it remains less capable off-road than the Wrangler and Bronco. Consider it for passenger space and comfort rather than assuming the trim name makes it a match for those dedicated off-roaders.

The Palisade is the larger Hyundai in this group, with a newer, boxier design and three-row family utility. Compare its cabin and cargo configuration with the Santa Fe’s if both are on your list; the best fit depends on how often you need the extra room.
10. Kia EV9: electric three-row space
The EV9 is the electric option among the ten and is described by Edmunds as a spacious three-row SUV. Edmunds rated it 8.2 out of 10 in its boxy-SUV comparison, the highest rating in that comparison. That score is Edmunds’ own editorial rating, not a standardized industry measure. Edmunds also reported a $56,545 entry price and 230-mile range for lower-spec trims in its comparison; those figures are tied to that context, not guaranteed current transaction prices or a claim about every trim.

How to narrow the shortlist
If trail driving and removable roofs come first
Start with the Wrangler and Bronco, then compare the exact trim and roof setup. Their off-road orientation and open-air choices distinguish them from family crossovers, while their road refinement and fuel-economy compromises deserve attention.
If you need three rows
Consider the Santa Fe, Palisade and EV9. The Santa Fe’s rear-most seat is tight according to Edmunds; the Palisade is the larger Hyundai; and the EV9 is electric. Check passenger access, cargo room with seats in use, and the powertrain’s fit with your driving and charging options.
If luxury is the priority
Compare the G-Class and Lexus GX. The G-Class emphasizes plush luxury and off-road character but gives up cargo space versus some rivals. The GX offers a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder and higher fuel use than the Land Cruiser, according to Edmunds.

If retro styling and capability matter
Compare the 4Runner and Land Cruiser by the actual configuration you would buy. Edmunds describes the Land Cruiser as roomier and more comfortable, while noting its higher price and more efficient hybrid powertrain. The 4Runner’s rear-seat and hybrid cargo limitations may be decisive for some households.
Why “boxy” does not mean the same thing everywhere
Edmunds’ ten vehicles are U.S.-market 2026 models, not a global inventory list. Two other square-profile vehicles illustrate why geography matters. Suzuki’s five-door Jimny Nomade launched in Japan in 2025; Suzuki says its global product pages may show Latin American specifications, and appearance, colors and equipment can vary by market and grade. Toyota announced Japanese sales of the Land Cruiser FJ starting May 14, 2026. Its Japanese specification page describes a five-seat, part-time 4WD model with a 2.7-liter engine and a Japan tax-inclusive price of ¥4,500,100. Those are Japan-specific details, not evidence that the FJ is available in the United States or another market. Toyota describes its traditional square cabin and ladder-frame construction on its Land Cruiser FJ design page and lists specifications on its Japanese model page.
Toyota Motor Corporation reported about 12.4 million cumulative Land Cruiser sales in more than 190 countries and regions as of the end of March 2026. That total includes Lexus LX and GX, so it is not a count of the current Land Cruiser alone. The figure is historical context, not a ranking of the ten 2026 SUVs.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The vehicles serve different purposes, and Edmunds’ comparison does not provide a common independent test protocol or a like-for-like ownership-cost comparison across all ten. It therefore cannot establish a reliable cross-model ranking for fuel costs, reliability, safety or sales. Check current local specifications, pricing and availability, and compare the trims you can actually buy before making a decision.
