BMW has built vehicles in the United States at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina since 1994. Its production history includes roadsters as well as SUVs, and its current lineup there is not the same as the plant’s historical roster. Here are the nameplates documented in BMW’s sources, with the dates and counting limits made clear.
Where BMW builds cars in North America
The documented production story here centers on BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, where vehicle assembly began in 1994. BMW’s sources establish production at this U.S. plant; they do not amount to a complete all-time roster for every BMW facility in North America.
There is also no official BMW list that defines exactly ten separate models. To make the headline’s count transparent, the ten entries below are nameplates and model lines, not ten unrelated vehicles: the X5 xDrive40e is described within the X5 entry rather than counted as a separate nameplate. Some entries are historical, while others appear in more recent plant records.
Ten BMW nameplates and model lines tied to Spartanburg
1. BMW Z3
The Z3 was among the early models built at Spartanburg. BMW’s plant history records its production, making it a notable roadster in a factory story now strongly associated with SUVs. The history page is the reference for its production milestone and timing.

3. BMW X3
The X3 appears on BMW’s current Spartanburg plant page, and the plant history records the start of X3 assembly there. It is one of the nameplates linking the factory’s earlier production history to its present-day roster.

4. BMW X4
The X4 appears in BMW Group’s 2024 report as a model associated with Spartanburg. BMW’s shorter live plant roster does not include it, so the 2024 report is the dated basis for this entry rather than evidence of an undated current listing.
5. BMW X5
The X5 is included in current Spartanburg plant information and in BMW’s 2024 production-site reporting. BMW also documented a specific electrified version: the X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid was assembled at Spartanburg from 2015 through 2018. That is a variant and a defined production period, not a separate nameplate.

8. BMW XM
BMW says the XM entered series production at Spartanburg and would be built alongside the X5, X6, and X7. The XM therefore belongs to the plant’s modern production story, unlike the historic Z3 and Z4 entries.
9–10. More than one way to count the lineup
BMW’s records establish a set of model lines, not a canonical ten-item list. Counting model variants separately could produce a different total, but the available documentation here does not support treating every variant as an independent model. The X5 xDrive40e is the clearly dated example: it belongs under X5, with its 2015–2018 assembly period stated explicitly.

How to read BMW’s changing plant roster
| Source and date | What it establishes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| BMW Group Plant Spartanburg live plant page, accessed October 7, 2026 | Lists the X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM as current plant models. | A current snapshot, not a complete history of every model built at the plant. |
| BMW Group Report 2024 | Lists the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM for Spartanburg. | A dated production-site record; it is why the X4 is included here even though it is absent from the live page’s short roster. |
| BMW plant history and model-specific releases | Document historic Z3 and Z4 production, the X3’s plant history, the X5 xDrive40e’s 2015–2018 period, and the XM’s series-production start. | Use the stated period or milestone for each claim rather than assuming all generations or variants shared the same production location. |
What the production milestones say about Spartanburg
BMW Manufacturing announced on April 30, 2025, that the seven-millionth BMW assembled in the United States had rolled off the Spartanburg line that month. That is a dated milestone, not a current cumulative total. Separately, BMW’s live plant page reported more than 7.3 million vehicles assembled since 1994 as of October 7, 2026; because it is a live cumulative figure, it will change over time.
These figures come from BMW and should be understood as company-reported production milestones. They describe the scale of the South Carolina plant, but they do not by themselves establish a full North American production history across all BMW facilities.
