For mostly paved miles, start with an endurance road bike; for regular gravel and dirt, consider an all-road or gravel model; for substantial luggage, look at a touring bike. The ten options below are a curated shortlist, not a tested ranking. Fit, current specifications, and local availability can change which one is right for you.
Choose the bike by route, fit, and load
Mostly pavement: endurance road
Endurance road bikes retain a road-bike character while prioritizing comfort and stability for longer days and rougher pavement. Canyon describes its Endurace range in terms of relaxed geometry, a longer steerer, greater stability, increased tire clearance, and comfort features. Those are category tendencies, not a promise that every rider will find a particular frame comfortable. Canyon Endurace
A mix of pavement and unpaved roads: all-road or gravel
All-road and gravel bikes make sense as unpaved riding becomes a regular part of the route. The boundary is not exact: Cyclingnews describes endurance/all-road and gravel as a continuum. A gravel-oriented bike may offer more clearance, tread options, and mounts, but it can feel different from a road-focused machine. Consider how rough and frequent the unpaved sections are rather than choosing by label alone. Cyclingnews on endurance, all-road, and gravel
Heavy luggage: touring
If you plan to carry substantial bags or a loaded rack, investigate touring bikes. They are designed around heavier loads and comfortable long-distance riding; an endurance or gravel bike may work for lighter bikepacking when its mounts and capacity suit the load. Cyclingnews touring-bike guide

Starting cycling can be intimidating, but we believe that new riders deserve bikes that deliver affordable performance without compromising on quality. This bike is perfect for new riders who are serious about their cycling goals. - BUILT TO LAST: All too often things are made cheaply and break before their time. We believe that bikes should be reliable and built to last. This is why we use premium aluminum in our frames, and back it with our industry leading lifetime warranty. We use only Shimano components, which are backed by Shimano’s two year warranty and function better than competitors. Ride with confidence!
Fit is personal
Geometry and a relaxed riding position matter more than the name on the category. A product description cannot tell you whether a frame size, reach, or handlebar position will suit your body. Test ride likely sizes and, where available, get professional sizing before committing.
Ten bikes to put on your shortlist
This selection covers paved endurance riding, mixed surfaces, and loaded touring. It is not a head-to-head test: the cited sources do not provide standardized measurements across all ten models. Model-year specifications and availability can vary by market, so confirm the exact trim before purchase.

Compare the details that shape a long ride
- Route surface: Match the bike to the actual proportion and roughness of pavement, gravel, and dirt you ride.
- Fit and position: Check frame size, reach, and riding position in person when possible; category labels cannot settle fit.
- Tires and clearance: Confirm both the frame’s stated clearance and the tire supplied on the exact build. Clearance figures above come from different manufacturers and measurement contexts, so they are not a direct performance ranking.
- Handling and gearing: Consider whether you prefer quick road handling or more stability, and whether the available gears suit your hills and cadence.
- Cargo and support: Check rack and bag mounts against the load you intend to carry, and consider access to service and replacement parts where you ride.
- Build and price: Compare the exact component trim and current local price. The cited guides do not establish a standardized price comparison across all candidates.
Choose tires and carry basic repair supplies
Adventure Cycling Association’s 2025 tour catalog gives paved-tour tire guidance of at least 700c × 28–32 mm in one passage and at least 700c × 32 mm in another. For off-road or mixed-surface tours, it recommends a mountain, hybrid, or gravel bike with more aggressive tread and, in the relevant passage, tires at least 2.0 inches wide. Technical singletrack calls for an appropriately equipped mountain bike. These are tour-organization recommendations, not universal fit rules: check frame clearance, tire standards, terrain, and tour-specific restrictions. Adventure Cycling Association 2025 tour catalog
Pack spare tubes and basic tools for minor roadside repairs, as the catalog advises. Make sure the tubes match your tire and valve, and learn how to use your repair kit before the ride. Adventure Cycling Association 2025 tour catalog
