For a used sports car with an average price below $30,000, start with the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata, 2020 Chevrolet Camaro coupe or 2023 Subaru BRZ. Those models appear in iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis, but its national averages are not guarantees for a particular car. The shortlist below also includes a convertible, an older V8 Corvette and a practical hatchback, so you can shop by the kind of driving and space you want—not just by rank.
This is a U.S. used-car guide as of October 2026. Treat $30,000 as the vehicle’s purchase-price ceiling before taxes, registration, financing and likely immediate maintenance. Check local listings and the specific car’s history, condition, trim and mileage.
Which used sports cars average under $30,000?
iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis ranks used sports cars using more than 12 million new and used vehicle records and NHTSA safety ratings. Its top results include six models below. The listed prices are average used prices for specified model years, not promised asking prices or transaction prices; individual listings can differ by location, mileage, trim and condition. Model year can change the price picture quickly. In the same iSeeCars analysis, the 2022 Miata averages $27,597 and the 2024 averages $30,857; the 2019 Camaro coupe averages $29,150, while the 2021 averages $33,769. The 2022 BRZ averages $26,299 and the 2024 averages $30,570. For the Challenger, the 2021 average is $32,384; for the Mustang convertible, the 2022 average is $27,281 and the 2024 average is $32,680. These figures are a reminder to compare the exact year and configuration you are considering.

Which one should you choose?
2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata: best for a light roadster
The Miata is a two-seat convertible for shoppers who value nimble-roadster character over room for passengers or luggage. The 2023 model’s $28,876 average in iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis puts it below the cap on average. Edmunds describes 2019–2021 examples as 181-hp two-seaters with an available six-speed manual, and warns that the cabin can feel cramped for tall drivers. 2020 Chevrolet Camaro coupe: best for a performance coupe
The Camaro coupe’s $29,441 average makes the 2020 model a near-cap choice in the cited analysis. Performance varies considerably by engine and trim, so do not shop by model name alone: verify the specific configuration, service history and condition before comparing prices.
2023 Subaru BRZ: best for a compact coupe
The BRZ offers a compact, rear-drive coupe format, with a $27,694 average for the 2023 model in iSeeCars’ 2026 figures. Edmunds notes that the earlier generation’s small rear seat is mainly useful for cargo and calls out revisions from 2017 onward. Treat the back seat as occasional space, not a substitute for a roomy passenger car.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro convertible: best if open-top driving matters
The 2020 Camaro convertible averages $25,809 in the analysis, lower than the coupe’s average in this dataset. That does not mean a particular convertible is in similar condition, has a comparable trim or will cost less to own. Compare the actual listing, equipment and maintenance needs.

The Challenger is the larger-coupe choice on this list, with more cabin room than a small roadster and a $29,945 average for the 2020 model. Confirm the engine and drivetrain, inspect the car carefully and get an insurance quote before deciding; versions can differ substantially.
2023 Ford Mustang convertible: best for a newer drop-top alternative
The Mustang convertible averages $25,737 for 2023 in iSeeCars’ analysis. Check its engine and trim, and compare it with a Mustang coupe if a convertible top is not a priority.

2022 Toyota GR86: a close alternative to the BRZ
iSeeCars reports a $28,737 average for the 2022 GR86 and $30,287 for the 2023 model in its 2026 analysis. The GR86 and BRZ are related, but they are not interchangeable for shopping: compare the exact year, trim, price and condition of each listing.
2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: best for a coupe-like roof
The RF is the Miata variant to consider if you prefer a retractable-fastback roof to the standard convertible’s look and feel. iSeeCars reports a $28,498 average for the 2022 RF. Verify that the specific RF listing—not just the model-year average—fits your price ceiling.
Chevrolet Corvette C6 (2008–2013): best for older V8 performance
For a shopper prioritizing V8 performance, Edmunds’ used-car guidance describes the C6 Corvette as offering up to 430 hp and advises taking a close look at maintenance records. Edmunds says coupes are easier to find below $25,000 than convertibles or later, higher-performance trims. This is an older-car cross-shop option, not a listing-level price guarantee: condition and service history should carry substantial weight.

Volkswagen Golf GTI (2015–2019): best for everyday practicality
The GTI is a sporty four-door hatchback, not a strict two-seat sports car, but it gives you more everyday practicality than a roadster. Edmunds describes an available turbocharged four-cylinder with up to 228 hp; manual and automatic transmissions depend on year and package. Its guidance suggests SE or Autobahn trims. Check local prices for the exact car because the cited advice does not establish current listing prices for every GTI year and trim.

Start with the kind of car you need
- Two seats and a convertible roof: Consider the Miata; choose the RF if you prefer a more coupe-like roof.
- A compact coupe: Compare the BRZ and GR86, checking the exact year and configuration.
- A larger American coupe or convertible: Look at the Camaro, Mustang or Challenger, and verify the specific engine and trim.
- V8 performance: Consider the older C6 Corvette if you can evaluate its condition and maintenance history carefully.
- More passenger and cargo flexibility: The GTI is a sporty hatchback alternative rather than a strict sports car.
Set a purchase-price ceiling, then budget for ownership
Keep the car’s asking price below $30,000 if that is your cap; taxes, registration, financing, insurance, tires, maintenance and repairs add to the cost. A national average is a starting point for comparison, not evidence that a local car is fairly priced or affordable to put on the road.
Inspect the individual car, not just the model
Before committing, review service records, title and vehicle history, modifications, tire and brake condition, and visible wear. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. A basic OBD-II scan can help identify diagnostic codes, but it is only one check and cannot replace a professional inspection. As Edmunds contributor Josh Jacquot put it: “Do your homework by avoiding cars with obvious deferred maintenance, neglect or heavy modifications.”
Check fit and usability in person
Try the seat and controls, assess visibility and entry and exit, and see whether the storage works for your needs. This matters especially in the Miata, whose cabin Edmunds warns may feel cramped for tall drivers, and in compact coupes whose rear seats have limited utility.
Are any new sports cars under $30,000?
New-car starting prices are a separate comparison from used-car averages. Kelley Blue Book listed the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata at $27,100, the 2025 Subaru BRZ at $29,000 and the 2025 Ford Mustang at $29,300; its 2025 Toyota GR86 starting price was $31,500. These are model-year starting-price figures, not used-car values or a guarantee that a particular new trim and configuration can be purchased for that amount.
