For a modern Toyota starting point, the GR86 is the clearest choice in the available specifications: it is rear-wheel drive and includes a Torsen limited-slip differential. But the evidence here does not establish ten distinct Toyota sports cars as comparable drift choices, so a trustworthy list should not pad the count or pretend to rank them. The AE86 belongs as a historically important project-car candidate; the Supra needs to be considered by generation and market.
How to choose a Toyota for drifting
For a drift-oriented car, the key starting points are rear-wheel drive and the ability to manage torque at the driven axle. A limited-slip differential is relevant because it helps deliver power through the rear wheels, while engine output, transmission, tires and setup affect how the car behaves. The sources available here document some factory features, but do not provide comparable drift testing, build costs or parts-support data across Toyota models. That is not enough to produce a defensible ten-car ranking.
This article therefore separates the documented modern starting point from a historic candidate and a generation-dependent possibility. It does not treat reputation as proof of performance, affordability or beginner suitability. Drifting should be practiced at a closed course or sanctioned event; check the local rules and event regulations that apply to you.

Toyota GR86: the clearest modern factory starting point
Toyota’s 2021 Japan-market launch release describes the GR86 as front-engine, rear-wheel drive, with a Torsen limited-slip differential and six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It gives a 215/40 R18 tire specification. Those are Japan-spec launch details, not a universal setup recommendation. Toyota Motor Corporation’s 2021 GR86 announcement.

Toyota USA’s June 1, 2026 announcement for the U.S. 2027 GR86 lists a 2.4-liter engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, an available six-speed manual and Track mode. Toyota said the model was expected at U.S. dealers in summer 2026; check local dealer availability and specifications rather than assuming the U.S. announcement applies in another market. Toyota’s Japan-market update, announced August 6, 2026, describes the updated GR86 as front-engine and rear-wheel drive and says Japanese dealers would start accepting orders on August 28, 2026. That timing and any market-specific equipment should not be generalized to other countries. Toyota’s Japan-market GR86 update.

For tires, confirm the exact year, grade, wheel, load and speed rating, and intended use before choosing a size. The 215/40 R18 figure is Toyota’s Japan-spec reference, not a general drift-fitment recommendation.
Toyota AE86: the historical anchor, not an automatic first-car recommendation
The AE86 has an important place in drifting history. Toyota’s 2024 GR86 TRUENO Edition announcement says the AE86 became the model of choice for Japanese “Drift King” Keiichi Tsuchiya and calls the GR86 “the spiritual successor to the AE86.” That is Toyota’s historical and enthusiast framing, not the result of a comparative drift test. It does not establish present-day price, availability, condition, or suitability for a beginner. Toyota USA’s 2024 GR86 TRUENO Edition announcement.

Toyota Supra: assess the specific generation and market
A Supra may be relevant to a drift build, but “Supra” covers distinct generations, and the evidence here does not compare them against the GR86 or AE86 for drift suitability. Toyota Ireland’s specification page describes the GR Supra’s balance of agility and stability; it is market-specific information, not proof that every Supra generation is a better or worse drift choice. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a ranked list of ten cars
The available official material establishes useful GR86 specifications and Toyota’s account of the AE86’s legacy, but it does not substantiate ten distinct Toyota sports cars as comparable drift candidates. Nor does it provide consistent evidence on purchase costs, build budgets, current parts and tire support, or performance in drift conditions. Filling ten slots would risk mixing unrelated models with historic or project cars and presenting folklore as a measured recommendation.

Before comparing additional candidates, identify the generation and market, then verify drivetrain and differential, factory power and transmission, tire and parts availability, and the cost and condition of the specific car. Those comparisons require model-specific evidence; a shared badge or reputation is not enough.

What to verify before choosing a GR86
- Confirm your local model year, trim and equipment with Toyota or a dealer; U.S. and Japan announcements differ in market and timing.
- Check the vehicle’s actual wheel and tire specifications. Do not assume Toyota’s Japan-market 215/40 R18 reference fits every grade or drift setup.
- Review the regulations and safety requirements for the closed course or sanctioned event where you plan to drive.
