The Ford F-150 ranks first, followed by the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota Tundra, GMC Sierra 1500, Jeep Gladiator, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Rivian R1T. That is the 2023 order from CarCovers.com’s April 5, 2023 editorial list—not an objective industry-wide verdict. The best truck changes with the job: full-size towing, daily comfort, trail driving, compact utility, or electric ownership all reward different choices.

How this 2023 ranking works

This is a source-specific ranking, not a universal industry consensus. The order below follows CarCovers.com’s April 5, 2023 list of the 10 Best Pickup Trucks for 2023. It should be read as an editorial judgment about the 2023 market, not as a laboratory-tested scorecard or a claim that every truck suits every buyer.

Other respected lists used different methods and reached different conclusions. Car and Driver’s 2023 rankings relied on instrumented testing, expert impressions, and a large set of comparison points; its separate 10Best process involved staff testing and individual voting. Cars.com, meanwhile, selected the Ford Maverick as its 2023 Best Pickup Truck. Those differences are useful context: the “best” truck depends heavily on whether you value towing, comfort, off-road ability, fuel economy, size, price, or electric performance.

The Ford F-150 earned the top position in the source ranking because it can be configured for an unusually wide range of jobs and lifestyles. Buyers could choose among different cab and bed arrangements, trims, powertrains, and equipment levels, creating versions aimed at everything from commercial work to family transportation and recreational use.

Its appeal is breadth rather than one single standout attribute. The F-150 can be a relatively straightforward work truck, a heavily equipped luxury-oriented pickup, or a more recreation-focused model. Towing and payload capability are important strengths, but the actual rating depends on the engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, and options selected.

The available PowerBoost hybrid system is worth noting as model-history context: Ford introduced it for the F-150 in the 2021 model year. That does not make every 2023 F-150 a hybrid, and fuel economy, towing, price, and size can make another truck a better fit for a particular buyer.

2. Ram 1500

Best for: full-size pickup buyers who put ride comfort and interior refinement near the top of the list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Ram 1500 ranked second in the direct-match list and was ranked first among Car and Driver’s 2023 full-size pickups, where it received a 10/10 rating. Its central argument is the combination of traditional truck capability with a comfortable ride, a well-finished interior, useful customization, and strong towing potential.

That refinement matters if the truck will spend as much time commuting or carrying passengers as it does hauling. The Ram’s position does not mean it automatically beats the F-150 for towing, price, fuel economy, or configuration flexibility. Compare the exact truck being considered, especially its cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, and available tow equipment.

3. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Best for: shoppers who want a wide full-size lineup and an improved cabin.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 placed third. Its main advantage is choice: Chevrolet offered numerous configurations, powertrains, trims, and equipment combinations, allowing the Silverado to cover work, family, towing, and recreational roles.

The 2023 model also benefited from a significant interior and infotainment update. MotorTrend’s 2023 Truck of the Year contender coverage highlighted the refresh, including a large available touchscreen on most trim levels. That was an important improvement over the outgoing cabin, although exact screen availability and other equipment still depended on trim.

Do not compare a base Silverado with a highly equipped rival and assume the result applies across the lineup. Towing, payload, fuel economy, seating, and bed utility vary substantially by configuration.

4. Toyota Tundra

Best for: buyers interested in Toyota’s redesigned full-size pickup and its modern powertrain and technology.

Rank #2

The Toyota Tundra took fourth place. The 2023 truck offered a turbocharged V6, a 10-speed automatic transmission, a spacious cabin, and an available 14-inch infotainment display. Those features made the redesigned Tundra a more technology-focused entry in the full-size class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source ranking also acknowledged underwhelming real-world fuel economy. That is an important counterweight to the Tundra’s technology and powertrain story, particularly for owners who drive many miles or tow frequently.

Toyota’s reputation may influence a buyer’s decision, but this ranking does not establish superior reliability, durability, or long-term ownership costs. Those claims require separate, model-specific evidence.

5. GMC Sierra 1500

Best for: shoppers drawn to distinctive styling and upscale full-size-truck equipment.

The GMC Sierra 1500 ranked fifth and occupied the more style- and luxury-oriented side of the General Motors full-size pickup family. The Denali trim was a major part of that appeal, while the 2023 update added technology and other equipment improvements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MotorTrend included the Sierra among its 2023 Truck of the Year contenders and discussed its recent midcycle update. The Sierra can therefore make sense for someone who wants a capable full-size truck but prefers GMC’s exterior design or the equipment approach of a Denali-level model.

Luxury trim and visual distinction are not proof of superior towing, reliability, or value. Compare the mechanical configuration and tow ratings—not just the badge or trim name—when the truck will perform demanding work.

6. Jeep Gladiator

Best for: open-air driving and trail use.

The Jeep Gladiator ranked sixth and is the most specialized conventional truck on this list. It combines a Wrangler-derived design with a pickup bed, removable body panels, serious off-road capability, and the option of a 3.6-liter V6 paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Its distinctive architecture is the reason to buy it—and also the reason not to treat it as a conventional full-size pickup substitute. Removable panels and trail-focused hardware support an experience that most traditional trucks cannot replicate, but buyers should expect compromises in highway quietness, ride comfort, interior space, and bed capacity compared with larger work-oriented pickups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Gladiator because you genuinely value its open-air and off-road abilities, not because you expect it to be the most efficient way to tow or carry bulky cargo.

7. Honda Ridgeline

Best for: everyday drivers who need an open bed but spend most of their time on pavement.

The Honda Ridgeline placed seventh in the direct-match ranking, but Car and Driver ranked it first in its 2023 midsize pickup category. The difference reflects different editorial methods and priorities, not a factual contradiction.

The Ridgeline’s defining distinction is its unibody construction. Unlike traditional body-on-frame pickups, it is engineered more like a crossover underneath. That contributes to a crossover-like ride and road manners, making it particularly appealing for commuting, errands, family use, and light-duty hauling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its short but wide bed and underfloor trunk add practical flexibility. The trade-off is that buyers seeking the traditional feel, heavy-duty work capability, or maximum trail-oriented hardware of a body-on-frame truck may prefer another entry. The Ridgeline is strongest when its on-road comfort and clever cargo usefulness matter more than pickup-truck convention.

8. Ford Ranger

Best for: buyers who want a maneuverable midsize truck rather than full-size dimensions.

The Ford Ranger ranked eighth and served as a midsize bridge between the compact Maverick and larger F-150 in the source’s description. Its core 2023 powertrain was a 2.3-liter four-cylinder paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

A Ranger can be easier to maneuver and park than a full-size pickup while still providing an open bed and truck-based utility. It is a sensible size choice for buyers who do not need the largest cab, bed, or towing configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model-year precision matters here. The source included some forward-looking language, so claims about the Ranger should be limited to what was available for the 2023 model year rather than blending in later-generation or expected features. Verify the exact market, trim, engine, and equipment before using a Ranger specification for a purchase decision.

9. Toyota Tacoma

Best for: buyers who prioritize compact dimensions and trail-ready equipment.

The Toyota Tacoma ranked ninth. Its appeal came from a relatively compact footprint, available off-road equipment, useful ground clearance, and a reputation for being a practical daily driver as well as a trail vehicle.

The Tacoma makes particular sense for someone who wants a smaller truck that can reach places where a full-size pickup feels cumbersome. Its ranking should not be interpreted as evidence that it is more reliable, durable, or valuable over the long term than every rival. Those are separate questions that depend on the specific vehicle, maintenance history, use, and ownership period.

10. Rivian R1T

Best for: early adopters seeking an electric pickup with strong performance and advanced technology.

The Rivian R1T was tenth and the only all-electric truck in this particular list. It stood out for its multiple motor and battery configurations, crew-cab-only layout, rapid acceleration, and technology-forward design.

Some statements in the 2023 source were written in future tense, including availability and projected performance. They should be treated as historical reporting from that time, not automatically as verified specifications. The same caution applies to the source’s reference to a large-battery range above 400 miles: advertised range, configuration, temperature, speed, payload, and towing conditions all matter.

Towing is the most important practical qualification. Car and Driver’s broader EV guidance notes that heavy trailer loads can reduce electric-pickup range dramatically. A gas or diesel truck will generally offer longer travel between stops and faster replenishment, while an R1T buyer must plan charging access, trailer-compatible routes, and extra time for recharging. Acceleration is impressive, but it should not be the deciding factor for someone who regularly tows long distances.

Full-size technology or upscale presentation Toyota Tundra, GMC Sierra 1500 The Tundra emphasized its modern powertrain and infotainment; the Sierra leaned toward styling and Denali luxury equipment.
Open-air trail driving Jeep Gladiator Removable body panels and Wrangler-derived off-road hardware are central to its identity.
On-road comfort with an open bed Honda Ridgeline Its unibody construction, crossover-like ride, wide bed, and underfloor trunk favor daily use.
Smaller footprint and trail readiness Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma Both provide midsize or compact-oriented alternatives to full-size trucks.
Electric performance and technology Rivian R1T It combines electric power with rapid acceleration and multiple motor and battery choices.

The truck that this list leaves out: Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is not an unlisted eleventh-place truck. It is an example of why rankings must be read in context. Cars.com named the 2023 Maverick its Best Pickup Truck, emphasizing its standard hybrid powertrain, a rated 42/33/37 mpg city/highway/combined figure, an available 250-horsepower turbocharged engine, and up to 4,000 pounds of towing when properly equipped.

That result does not invalidate the CarCovers.com order. The Maverick is a compact pickup aimed at a different value proposition: lower size and potentially lower operating costs rather than the full-size capability or enthusiast-oriented breadth represented by much of this list.

How to choose among the 2023 trucks

  1. Start with the job, not the badge. Decide whether you need a full-size work truck, a midsize daily driver, an off-road specialist, an open-air vehicle, or an electric pickup.
  2. Calculate the real trailer and payload requirement. Towing and payload figures depend on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, and options. Compare the rating of the exact configuration, not the maximum number advertised for the model line.
  3. Choose the bed and cab before the trim. A longer bed may matter more than a luxury package. Cab size affects passenger space, cargo flexibility, wheelbase, and sometimes the available payload or tow configuration.
  4. Estimate fuel or charging logistics. A hybrid or compact truck may better suit a high-mileage commuter. An electric truck can work well when charging is convenient, but towing and cold-weather conditions can make range planning much more demanding.
  5. Separate lifestyle equipment from work capability. Removable panels, off-road hardware, luxury trim, a large screen, and rapid acceleration are legitimate reasons to choose a truck—but none alone proves better payload, towing, reliability, or value.
  6. Verify 2023-specific information. Do not substitute a current model’s engine, screen, range, transmission, or trim structure for what was available in the 2023 model year.

Protecting a truck after purchase

Owners who park outdoors may want a pickup truck cover to reduce exposure to weather and ultraviolet light. This is a model-neutral accessory, but it is not a one-size-fits-all purchase. Before ordering, verify the truck’s cab configuration, bed length, mirror clearance, racks, tonneau cover, and whether the cover is rated for indoor or outdoor use. A cover designed for one F-150 bed and cab combination may not fit a Tacoma, Gladiator, Ridgeline, or R1T correctly.

For trucks used as work vehicles, bed protection and storage accessories can also be worthwhile, but mounting systems and bed dimensions differ significantly across the ten models. Match the product to the specific truck rather than buying on the basis of “pickup” alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disclosure: Product availability and fitment can change. Check the current listing and confirm compatibility with your exact truck before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the top truck in the CarCovers.com ranking used for this article, but that is a source-specific editorial judgment. Other publications ranked the Ram 1500 first among full-size trucks, while Cars.com selected the compact Ford Maverick as its 2023 Best Pickup Truck.

Is the Ford F-150 really the best pickup truck of 2023?

The Honda Ridgeline is the strongest choice here for buyers who spend most of their time on pavement and still want an open bed. Its unibody construction, crossover-like ride, wide bed, and underfloor trunk distinguish it from traditional body-on-frame pickups.

Which 2023 pickup is best for everyday driving?

The Jeep Gladiator is the most specialized off-road and open-air choice in this ranking, while the Toyota Tacoma is a smaller, more conventional alternative with available trail-oriented equipment. The best version depends on the type of terrain and how much highway comfort you need.

Which truck is best for off-road driving?

It can be practical for some owners, but heavy trailer loads can reduce electric range substantially. Before buying, map charging stops that work with the trailer, allow additional charging time, and compare the exact R1T configuration’s tow and payload limits.

Is the Rivian R1T practical for towing?

No. Fit depends on cab configuration, bed length, mirror clearance, racks, tonneau covers, and the cover’s indoor or outdoor rating. Confirm exact fitment before ordering.

Can one pickup truck cover fit all ten trucks?

The Bottom Line

The Ford F-150 is the strongest all-purpose choice in this source-specific 2023 ranking because of its breadth of configurations. The Ram 1500 is the better argument for full-size comfort, the Honda Ridgeline for easy everyday driving, the Jeep Gladiator for open-air off-roading, and the Rivian R1T for electric performance. The right choice still depends on the exact cab, bed, powertrain, equipment, workload, and—especially for the R1T—towing and charging requirements.
