If your priority is a sedan that is likely to stay on the road for years without frequent, severe repair bills, start with the Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Prius, and Toyota Avalon. The Lexus IS has the strongest long-mileage signal in the available data, while the Lexus ES Hybrid offers a more comfortable premium alternative. Used-car shoppers should also consider the discontinued Acura ILX and Toyota Avalon Hybrid—but only after verifying condition and service history.

These are comparative recommendations, not promises. No sedan is maintenance-free, and a neglected Civic can be a worse purchase than a carefully maintained Lexus or Avalon. The best evidence measures either the predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles or the typical cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs. It cannot predict exactly what will happen to one individual car.

Rank Sedan Predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles Best fit Main caution
1 Lexus IS 27.5% Long-term ownership with a premium feel Luxury parts and labor can cost more
2 Toyota Avalon 18.9% Roomy, comfortable used sedan buyers Discontinued; age-related repairs still matter
3 Toyota Prius 12.2% Efficient commuting and high-mileage use Hybrid-system and battery condition must be checked
4 Honda Civic 10.9% Low-cost compact ownership Exact year, recall, and accident history are important
5 Acura ILX 10.6% Used buyers seeking Civic-like durability with a premium badge Used-only model; service can cost more than a Civic
6 Toyota Camry Hybrid 10.2% Efficient mainstream family transportation Hybrid battery and system condition need verification
7 Toyota Avalon Hybrid 9.7% Comfortable, efficient used-sedan ownership Discontinued and increasingly age-sensitive
8 Toyota Camry 9.0% Balanced mainstream family ownership Powertrain and known issues vary by model year
9 Honda Accord 8.8% More space than a Civic without luxury-brand costs Year-specific engines, transmissions, and recalls matter
10 Lexus ES Hybrid 7.5% Quiet, comfortable long-distance driving Premium repair and maintenance costs

The order should not be read as a complete ownership-cost ranking. A car's purchase price, insurance, fuel use, mileage, rust, accident history, and maintenance records can matter more than a few percentage points in a population study.

What rarely needs repairs really means

A long-lasting sedan can still need regular service. Oil or fluid changes, tires, brakes, batteries, filters, belts, wiper parts, suspension components, and corrosion prevention are not evidence that a model is unreliable. They are normal ownership requirements.

For this article, rarely needs repairs means a model has a comparatively strong record for surviving high mileage and avoiding unusually frequent or severe unscheduled repairs. That definition has two separate parts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Longevity: the likelihood of reaching very high mileage, measured here by iSeeCars' 250,000-mile prediction.
  • Repair burden: typical repair cost, shop-visit frequency, and the chance that a repair will be severe, measured separately with RepairPal data where available.

Those measurements answer different questions. A model can have an excellent chance of reaching 250,000 miles but still require occasional expensive repairs as it ages. Conversely, a model with low average repair costs may not be especially likely to reach extreme mileage if owners commonly retire it earlier for other reasons.

Repair-cost context: how the leading choices compare

RepairPal's reliability rating combines repair cost, repair frequency, and the severity of unscheduled repairs. Its annual figures represent all model years in its database, so they are useful for broad comparison but are not a quote for a specific year, mileage, location, or vehicle condition. The methodology and Civic figures can be reviewed through RepairPal's Civic reliability information.

Model or data set RepairPal reliability rating Average annual repair and maintenance cost Unscheduled visits per year Probability of severe repair
Lexus IS250 4.0/5 $487 Not supplied in the cited data 8%
Toyota Prius 4.0/5 $408 Repairs described as comparatively minor, with somewhat more frequent visits than average Not supplied in the cited data
Honda Civic 4.5/5 $368 0.22 10%
Toyota Camry 4.0/5 $388 0.28 11%
Honda Accord 4.5/5 $400 0.26 9%

There are no directly comparable model-level figures in the supplied data for every sedan on the list. RepairPal's broader Toyota, Acura, and Lexus results still support the general pattern: these brands have strong reliability reputations, but luxury-brand parts and labor can increase the cost of an otherwise manageable repair.

1. Lexus IS

The Lexus IS ranked first among the sedans in iSeeCars' passenger-car table, with a 27.5% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That was 10.6 times the passenger-car average in the study, giving the IS the clearest statistical longevity advantage here.

RepairPal's IS250 data adds important context: a 4.0/5 reliability rating, approximately $487 in average annual repair and maintenance costs, and an 8% probability of a severe repair. Those figures do not cover every IS model year or powertrain, but they show why the IS should not be described as an inexpensive Toyota alternative. Lexus parts, specialized systems, tires, and labor can cost more than comparable Honda or Toyota components.

The best used IS is a well-maintained, non-neglected example with complete records. Check transmission service where applicable, suspension wear, oil or coolant leaks, electrical equipment, tire condition, and evidence of performance modifications or hard driving. The model's longevity signal is most useful when the individual car has been serviced consistently.

2. Toyota Avalon

Best for: Used-car buyers who want a large, quiet, comfortable sedan with a strong long-mileage record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Avalon had an 18.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, making it one of the strongest large-sedan choices in the iSeeCars passenger-car analysis. It is especially appealing to drivers who want more cabin room and a softer, more relaxed driving experience than a compact sedan.

The Avalon is no longer a new-car choice, so age and condition are central to the recommendation. Toyota's overall reliability is strong, but an older Avalon can still develop expensive problems involving sensors, gaskets, suspension components, and electrical equipment. A high odometer reading is not automatically disqualifying; missing records, corrosion, neglected fluids, and deferred suspension work are much more concerning.

Prioritize a later, documented example when your budget allows. Before buying, inspect the underside for rust and leaks, confirm that the transmission and cooling system have been maintained, and have a mechanic check suspension bushings, steering components, engine seals, and electrical systems. The Avalon is a durable platform, not an exemption from age-related repairs.

3. Toyota Prius

Best for: Drivers who want excellent fuel economy and a sedan or hatchback that can accumulate substantial mileage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Prius recorded a 12.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, ranking third in iSeeCars' passenger-car table. RepairPal rates the Prius 4.0/5 and reports approximately $408 in average annual repair and maintenance costs. Its repairs are described as comparatively minor, although shop visits may be somewhat more frequent than average.

The major buying mistake is to treat the hybrid system as either automatically fragile or automatically immortal. A Prius can be a very durable high-mileage vehicle, but battery age, hybrid-system cooling, inverter-related history, software updates, and recall completion should be investigated—particularly on older, high-mileage examples.

Ask the seller for hybrid-system diagnostic information rather than relying only on a warning-light-free dashboard. Inspect the cooling passages and listen for unusual fan operation. Also budget for the ordinary components that every older car needs: tires, brakes, suspension parts, air-conditioning work, and the 12-volt battery. A Prius with a healthy hybrid system and clear records can be an outstanding commuter; one with an unknown battery condition deserves a lower offer or a professional diagnostic assessment.

4. Honda Civic

Best for: Buyers seeking a compact sedan with low typical repair costs and broad parts availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Civic had a 10.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. RepairPal gives it a 4.5/5 reliability rating, approximately $368 in average annual repair and maintenance costs, 0.22 unscheduled repair visits per year, and a 10% probability of a severe repair.

Among the models with supplied RepairPal cost figures, the Civic has the lowest average annual cost. That does not make every Civic inexpensive to own: turbocharged engines, continuously variable transmissions, advanced driver-assistance equipment, air-conditioning systems, and model-year-specific electronics can change the repair picture.

When shopping used, identify the exact generation and engine, review maintenance records, check for uneven tire wear or collision damage, and verify recalls by VIN. A Civic is often a sensible choice for a first-time buyer or a household that wants predictable mainstream service, but its individual history still matters more than the badge.

5. Acura ILX

Best for: Used buyers who want a compact premium sedan with a durable underlying package and are comfortable paying more than Civic prices for some service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ILX recorded a 10.6% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. It is a used-only recommendation because production ended after the 2022 model year. Acura's brand-level reliability results are strong, and the ILX shares some of the practical advantages associated with Honda and Acura engineering.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase

The trade-off is ownership cost. A premium badge can mean more expensive parts, specialized labor, insurance, and trim-specific electronics even when the mechanical foundation is durable. The ILX is therefore not automatically a better financial choice than a Civic.

Look for a stock or lightly modified car with complete maintenance documentation. Check recalls, transmission behavior, suspension noise, air-conditioning performance, infotainment and safety electronics, and signs of accident repair. If two examples are otherwise similar, choose the one with the clearer history and better inspection results rather than the one with the lower advertised price.

6. Toyota Camry Hybrid

Best for: Drivers who want a spacious mainstream sedan with hybrid fuel economy and a strong long-term record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Camry Hybrid posted a 10.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, ahead of the conventional Camry in the iSeeCars passenger-car table. Toyota hybrids have a long-established presence, but a used buyer should still verify battery and hybrid-system condition rather than assuming that all hybrid components are equally healthy.

Toyota states that hybrid batteries in 2020-and-newer Toyota hybrids receive coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to the applicable warranty terms. Warranty coverage is useful protection, but it is not evidence that a battery will last indefinitely or that a particular used car has been maintained properly.

The Camry is hybrid-only in the United States beginning with the 2025 model year, according to Toyota's announcement of the next-generation Camry. That means shoppers need to separate older gasoline Camrys from newer hybrid-only Camrys when comparing price, fuel economy, warranty coverage, and repair risk. Toyota lists ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance coverage for the 2026 Camry for two years or 25,000 miles; confirm the exact terms for the vehicle's market, model year, and purchase date.

For a used Camry Hybrid, request battery-health information, check hybrid-system cooling and warning codes, verify recall completion, and inspect the conventional parts too. Suspension, brakes, air conditioning, tires, and interior electronics can still require repair even when the hybrid drivetrain is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Toyota Avalon Hybrid

Best for: Used buyers who want Avalon comfort with better fuel efficiency and are prepared to evaluate an older hybrid carefully.

The Avalon Hybrid had a 9.7% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. It combines the Avalon's roomy, comfortable sedan format with Toyota's established hybrid architecture, making it an attractive used-market alternative to a newer, smaller hybrid.

It is also discontinued, so battery age becomes more important with every passing year. Check hybrid-system diagnostic data, battery cooling, software and recall history, and the condition of the conventional suspension and electrical equipment. The car may be mechanically durable while still needing age-related work in areas unrelated to the hybrid battery.

Avalon Hybrids are compelling when the condition is unusually strong and the records are complete. They are less attractive when the seller cannot document routine service or when the price assumes that the car is valuable simply because Toyota hybrids have a good reputation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Toyota Camry

Best for: Mainstream buyers who want a comfortable, widely supported midsize sedan and are shopping primarily in the used market.

The conventional Camry had a 9.0% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. RepairPal rates it 4.0/5, with approximately $388 in average annual repair costs, 0.28 annual repair visits, and an 11% probability of a severe repair.

The Camry recommendation needs more model-year qualification than its reputation sometimes receives. Older gasoline Camrys, newer turbocharged variants, and hybrid Camrys do not have identical powertrains or maintenance considerations. Verify the exact engine and transmission, investigate model-year-specific recalls and known issues, and confirm that fluid services were completed on schedule.

For many buyers, the Camry remains one of the safest all-around choices because it combines comfortable dimensions, mainstream parts availability, strong resale demand, and a substantial reliability record. But high resale value can cause sellers to overprice neglected examples. Compare the car's inspection results and records—not just its mileage and Toyota badge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Honda Accord

Best for: Buyers who need more passenger and trunk space than a Civic without moving to a luxury brand.

The Accord had an 8.8% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. RepairPal rates it 4.5/5 and ranks it first among midsize cars in its comparison, with approximately $400 in average annual repair costs, 0.26 annual shop visits, and a 9% probability of a severe repair.

The Accord is a strong balance between space, driving comfort, parts availability, and repair-cost discipline. As with the Civic and Camry, the exact year matters. Engine design, transmission type, driver-assistance hardware, infotainment systems, recalls, and maintenance requirements can differ substantially between generations.

Inspect for oil leaks, cooling-system problems, suspension wear, uneven tire wear, transmission behavior, and evidence of collision repair. A well-maintained Accord is a particularly good choice for a family that needs a midsize sedan but does not want the potential labor and parts costs of a luxury model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Lexus ES Hybrid

Best for: Drivers who prioritize quiet, comfortable long-distance travel and are willing to pay premium-brand repair prices.

The Lexus ES Hybrid had a 7.5% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, compared with 6.5% for the non-hybrid ES in the same iSeeCars passenger-car data. It is a comfort-focused long-term choice rather than the cheapest sedan to repair.

The ES Hybrid benefits from Lexus' strong reliability reputation and Toyota hybrid experience, but premium ownership costs still apply. Lexus parts, labor, tires, electronics, and luxury interior components may cost more than equivalent Toyota or Honda items. A strong reliability rating does not eliminate the possibility of a costly suspension, air-conditioning, battery, or electronic repair on an older vehicle.

Choose an ES Hybrid when its condition, records, and inspection justify the price. Confirm battery and hybrid-system health, check for recalls, inspect the suspension and underbody, and make sure the vehicle has not been neglected because its previous owner assumed Lexus quality would compensate for skipped maintenance.

Which sedan is best for your situation?

Your priority Best starting choices Why
Lowest typical repair cost among the supplied figures Honda Civic Strong RepairPal rating and the lowest listed average annual repair and maintenance cost
More room without luxury-brand service Honda Accord or Toyota Camry Midsize space, mainstream parts support, and strong reliability records
Fuel economy and high-mileage commuting Toyota Prius or Camry Hybrid Strong longevity signals with efficient hybrid powertrains
Best extreme-mileage statistical signal Lexus IS Highest predicted 250,000-mile probability in the cited passenger-car table
Large used sedan value Toyota Avalon Excellent longevity signal and a roomy, comfortable cabin
Used premium compact Acura ILX Durable underlying package, but potentially higher service costs than a Civic
Premium comfort Lexus ES Hybrid Quiet, comfortable design with a strong long-term reputation

If the budget is tight, mainstream Honda and Toyota models generally offer the simplest path to affordable repairs. If comfort is more important than minimum repair cost, the Lexus choices are reasonable—but budget for their premium parts and labor. If you are buying an older Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, or ILX, condition should outweigh the model's position in this ranking.

How to buy an example that actually rarely needs repairs

Model-level reliability only helps after you find a healthy individual car. Use this process before making an offer.

  1. Confirm the VIN and check for unrepaired recalls. Use NHTSA's VIN recall lookup to identify unrepaired safety recalls associated with that specific vehicle. A model-wide recall count is less useful than a VIN-specific result. Recall screening does not replace a mechanical inspection.
  2. Review ownership and title history. Obtain a vehicle history report and look for flood damage, salvage or rebuilt titles, severe collisions, inconsistent mileage, rental or commercial use, and long gaps between ownership or registration events. A clean report is helpful but cannot reveal every repair or accident.
  3. Demand maintenance records. Match invoices, inspection receipts, and digital records against the manufacturer's schedule. Look for evidence of regular fluid changes, brake and tire service, cooling-system work, transmission service where required, and recall completion. A car maintenance log book can help an owner preserve this information for future service and resale, although records from actual shops are more persuasive than an unverified handwritten history.
  4. Pay for an independent inspection before purchase. Arrange a used-car pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic who is not financially connected to the seller. The inspection should include a lift inspection, fluid and leak checks, underbody and rust examination, tire and suspension assessment, brake inspection, and a road test. This is often more valuable than choosing a higher-ranked model with no inspection.
  5. Scan for stored and pending codes. A dashboard with no warning lights does not prove that the vehicle has no diagnostic history. A basic OBD2 scanner for checking a used car can help identify stored or pending codes before purchase. It cannot replace a mechanic: codes may need interpretation, readiness monitors may reveal a recently cleared problem, and many mechanical or body issues will not appear in a basic scan.
  6. Give hybrids an additional diagnostic review. For a Prius, Camry Hybrid, Avalon Hybrid, or ES Hybrid, request hybrid-battery and hybrid-system diagnostic information. Check battery age, cooling, inverter or power-control history, software updates, warranty eligibility, and recall completion. Do not assume that a battery warning light must be present before a battery-related expense becomes possible.
  7. Inspect for neglect and structural damage. Look for oil or coolant leaks, overheating evidence, corrosion, water intrusion, mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, bent suspension components, uneven tire wear, and signs of flood damage. Rust and prior structural damage can make even a mechanically reliable sedan a poor long-term purchase.
  8. Price the full ownership package. Before buying, compare insurance, fuel, tires, brakes, scheduled service, registration, and likely repairs. Luxury-brand examples such as the Lexus IS, Acura ILX, and Lexus ES Hybrid may be reliable but still cost more to maintain. If a major repair is already visible, obtain a car repair cost estimate before deciding whether the asking price is reasonable.

Maintenance habits that protect longevity

Even the best sedan on this list can become expensive when service is deferred. Follow the manufacturer's schedule for the exact engine, transmission, hybrid system, and model year. Keep fluid levels correct, repair leaks promptly, maintain proper tire pressure, rotate and replace tires as needed, and investigate warning lights rather than clearing them.

For older vehicles, prevention becomes increasingly important. Inspect for rust before it spreads, replace worn suspension parts before they damage tires, service cooling systems before overheating occurs, and keep battery terminals clean and secure. Hybrid owners should keep battery-cooling passages clear and address unusual fan noise or warning messages promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The goal is not to avoid every maintenance expense. It is to prevent small, predictable service needs from becoming engine, transmission, battery, or structural failures.

What the ranking cannot tell you

  • It cannot tell you whether a particular used car was maintained properly.
  • It cannot account for regional rust, extreme heat, road salt, towing, short-trip use, or commercial driving.
  • It does not make a discontinued model equivalent to a new vehicle with a factory warranty.
  • It does not prove that a hybrid battery, transmission, air-conditioning system, or electronic module will last to 250,000 miles.
  • It does not compare purchase price, fuel economy, insurance, safety equipment, comfort, or resale value in a complete way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sedan on this list is most likely to reach 250,000 miles?

The Lexus IS had the strongest predicted longevity signal in the cited iSeeCars passenger-car table, with a 27.5% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That is a population estimate, not a guarantee for an individual Lexus IS, and premium repair costs can still be higher than mainstream alternatives.

Are hybrid sedans a bad choice for long-term ownership?

Not necessarily. The Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Avalon Hybrid, and Lexus ES Hybrid all appear among the long-lasting sedans in the cited data. However, used buyers should verify hybrid-battery condition, cooling, diagnostic information, recall completion, and remaining warranty coverage.

Is a discontinued Toyota Avalon still worth buying?

It can be, particularly when the car has complete records, low corrosion, and a strong independent inspection. The Avalon has an 18.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles in the cited study, but age-related repairs involving suspension, sensors, gaskets, and electrical equipment still need to be budgeted.

Is the Honda Civic cheaper to repair than the Toyota Camry?

The supplied RepairPal figures show approximately $368 in average annual repair and maintenance costs for the Civic versus approximately $388 for the Camry. These figures cover all model years represented in RepairPal's database and should not be treated as a forecast for a specific vehicle.

What is the most important step when buying one of these sedans used?

Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection and review the vehicle's maintenance and title history. Also check the VIN for unrepaired recalls, scan for stored or pending diagnostic codes, and request hybrid-system information when shopping for a hybrid.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Prius, and Toyota Avalon are the strongest mainstream starting points for long-term sedan ownership. The Lexus IS leads the cited longevity table, while the Lexus ES Hybrid offers premium comfort. The Acura ILX and Avalon Hybrid can be smart used purchases, but only when their records, inspection results, and condition are clearly better than the alternatives. In every case, choose the individual car with the best history—not simply the model with the highest ranking.
