10 Best Adventure Motorcycles of 2025, Ranked

The BMW R 1300 GS is the best premium all-rounder, but the KTM 890 Adventure R, Honda Africa Twin, Yamaha Ténéré 700, and other 2025 adventure motorcycles make stronger choices for specific riders and terrain.

The BMW R 1300 GS is the best overall 2025 adventure motorcycle for the broadest range of riders, especially those dividing their time between paved touring, gravel roads, and moderate off-road travel. It is not the best choice for everyone: the KTM 890 Adventure R is better for aggressive dirt riding, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 offers a simpler dirt-focused platform, and the Honda Africa Twin is the more versatile pick if a dual-clutch transmission matters.

This ranking covers 2025 model-year motorcycles, not necessarily the newest motorcycles sold today. It is primarily U.S.-oriented, and pricing, trim names, equipment, model-year availability, and dealer inventory can vary by country. The order is an editorial comparison of manufacturer-published specifications, equipment, wheel sizes, suspension, weight, fuel capacity, intended use, and price positioning—not the result of first-hand testing, dyno testing, or long-term reliability testing.

2 Honda Africa Twin Proven mixed-surface touring 1,083cc twin, manual or DCT versions, touring-focused Adventure Sports ES trim Large and heavier in its most touring-oriented forms
3 KTM 890 Adventure R Serious off-road riding WP XPLOR suspension, Offroad ABS, Connectivity Unit, optional Rally Mode Tall, demanding, and less relaxed on pavement
4 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro Refined middleweight versatility 888cc triple, 21-inch front wheel, tubeless spoked wheels, 7-inch TFT Still tall and heavy in technical terrain
5 Yamaha Ténéré 700 Simple dirt-oriented value 21/18-inch wheels, adjustable suspension, 459-pound wet weight Less luxury equipment and wind protection
6 Ducati DesertX Performance-oriented adventure riding 21/18-inch wheels, approximately 110 hp, 5.54-gallon tank Premium purchase and running costs
7 BMW F 900 GS Lighter European alternative 482-pound ready-to-ride weight, 105 hp, available Enduro package Pro Small 3.8-gallon tank for long, loaded trips
8 Aprilia Tuareg 660 Lightweight chassis balance 449-pound wet weight, 240mm of front and rear travel, cruise control Smaller service footprint in some U.S. regions
9 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Practical mid-price buying 5.3-gallon tank, Gravel mode, 21-inch front wheel, $11,709 U.S. base MSRP Heavy for a middleweight and tube-type wheels
10 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special High-power American touring 150 hp, semi-active suspension, nine ride modes, Adaptive Ride Height 569-pound running-order weight

How to read the numbers: manufacturer-reported horsepower, wet weight, curb weight, and ready-to-ride weight are not necessarily measured using the same procedures or equipment assumptions. Treat the figures as useful category indicators, not as a laboratory-standard comparison.

1. BMW R 1300 GS: best premium all-rounder

The BMW R 1300 GS is the strongest default recommendation when one motorcycle needs to handle long paved trips, two-up travel, gravel roads, and moderate off-road use. Its boxer-twin layout, shaft drive, substantial electronics package, and road-oriented 19/17-inch cast wheels make it particularly convincing as a high-speed travel motorcycle that can still leave the pavement.

#1 Best Overall
ILM Full Face Motorcycle Helmets for Adult Men and Women DOT Model ILM-313
  • 2 Visors Included: Clear + Smoked and 1 Neck Scarf for Winter Use
  • Streamlined Aerodynamic Design Reduces Wind Noise and Drag
  • Advanced and Lightweight Durable ABS Shell
  • Quick Release Clasp and Strap and Removable Inner Lining Pads
  • Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards

BMW lists a 1,300cc boxer twin producing 145 hp and 110 lb-ft of torque. The motorcycle has a 5.0-gallon fuel tank, 523-pound ready-to-ride weight, 7.5 inches of front suspension travel, and 7.9 inches at the rear. Standard equipment includes lean-angle-optimized ABS, traction control, cruise control, and four riding modes.

The 19-inch front wheel is a useful compromise. It rolls more naturally on pavement and supports the GS’s touring mission better than a 21-inch wheel, while remaining capable on maintained gravel and uncomplicated trails. The trade-off appears when terrain becomes rocky, deeply rutted, sandy, or technically steep: the BMW’s weight and cast wheels make it less agile and less forgiving than the lighter, dirt-biased motorcycles farther down this list.

Choose it if: premium touring, passenger comfort, electronic assistance, and one-bike versatility matter more than minimizing mass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if: difficult trails will be a regular part of the riding plan or the purchase budget is tight.

2. Honda Africa Twin: best proven adventure-touring platform

The 2025 Honda Africa Twin remains one of the broadest-purpose choices in the category. It has the engine size and road manners for highway travel, a low-center-of-gravity design intended to make a large motorcycle more manageable, and the equipment needed for serious mixed-surface touring. Its biggest buying advantage is that the range includes both conventional-manual and dual-clutch transmission, or DCT, versions.

Honda identifies the 1,083cc parallel twin, cruise control, 6.5-inch touchscreen display, and selectable torque control among the model’s core features. Buyers can also choose the Adventure Sports ES trim, which emphasizes touring equipment and uses electronically controlled suspension. That creates a meaningful choice within the range: a rider prioritizing rougher surfaces may prefer the more direct conventional version, while a rider covering long distances with luggage may value the additional touring equipment and suspension technology of the Adventure Sports ES.

The Africa Twin is also a sensible choice for riders who place a high value on Honda’s broad dealer network and established model support. It is not a small motorcycle, however, and the most touring-oriented versions add both weight and cost. DCT is convenient and distinctive, but it also makes the buying decision more specialized than simply choosing between two similar manual trims.

Choose it if: you want a capable mixed-surface tourer, need the option of DCT, or value Honda’s support network.

Look elsewhere if: low mass and technical trail agility are more important than highway comfort and transmission choice.

3. KTM 890 Adventure R: best off-road-focused middleweight

The KTM 890 Adventure R is the most overtly dirt-oriented motorcycle in this group. Its mission is not merely to tolerate gravel on the way to a scenic overlook; it is designed for riders who expect difficult gravel, sand, rough trails, and rally-style terrain to be a significant part of the trip.

For 2025, KTM says the model retains WP XPLOR suspension, adds a lower off-road-focused windshield, and includes the Connectivity Unit as standard. The electronics package includes OFFROAD ABS linked with Offroad Mode, while Rally Mode is available as an option. Those controls can be valuable when the surface changes quickly, but they also mean there is more setup knowledge involved than with a simpler motorcycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The R model’s tall, rally-influenced chassis and suspension are advantages when the pace rises off pavement. They give an experienced rider more room and control over rough terrain, but they can be intimidating at low speed or when stopping on uneven ground. Its road manners are perfectly usable for connecting trails, yet the KTM’s character is less relaxed than that of the BMW R 1300 GS or Honda Africa Twin.

Choose it if: aggressive off-road travel, rally-style riding, and suspension capability are the primary priorities.

Look elsewhere if: most of your miles will be paved touring, you are a newer adventure rider, or a low seat and easygoing road behavior matter most.

4. Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro: best refined middleweight all-rounder

The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is one of the most complete compromises in the middleweight class. Its three-cylinder engine gives it a more distinctive road-going character than the typical parallel twin, while its 21-inch front wheel, long-travel suspension, and tubeless spoked wheels preserve credible off-road ability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Triumph lists an 888cc three-cylinder engine producing 106.5 bhp, a 5.28-gallon fuel tank, 503-pound wet weight, and adjustable seat heights of 33.86 or 34.65 inches. Suspension travel measures 240mm at the front and 230mm at the rear. Standard equipment includes adjustable Showa suspension, a 7-inch TFT display, cornering ABS, and 21/17-inch wheels.

This specification makes the Rally Pro especially attractive to riders who want premium standard equipment without moving to a heavyweight flagship. The engine should appeal to riders who spend significant time on pavement, while the wheel size and suspension give it more authority off road than a road-biased adventure tourer.

The compromise is physical size. At 503 pounds wet and with a tall seat, the Triumph is still a substantial motorcycle in technical terrain. It also sits above simpler middleweights in purchase and maintenance-cost expectations.

Choose it if: you want a polished, powerful middleweight that can tour comfortably and still handle serious unpaved travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if: you need the lightest possible trail bike or prefer a simpler, lower-cost ownership proposition.

5. Yamaha Ténéré 700: best simple dirt-oriented value

The 2025 U.S.-specification Yamaha Ténéré 700 is the clearest choice here for riders who want a comparatively direct, dirt-focused adventure motorcycle without moving to a single-cylinder design. Its 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, relatively low wet weight, long-travel suspension, and 689cc parallel twin give it a useful balance for backcountry travel.

Yamaha lists a 459-pound wet weight, 4.2-gallon fuel capacity, 8.3 inches of front suspension travel, and 7.9 inches at the rear. The motorcycle uses a fully adjustable 43mm front fork, selectable ABS, and a 34.4-inch seat. For 2025, Yamaha added YCC-T electronic throttle control and revised rider-interface equipment while retaining the model’s direct off-road-focused layout.

The Ténéré 700’s appeal is not a long list of luxury features. It is the combination of manageable weight, proper dirt-oriented wheel sizes, useful suspension travel, and a platform that makes sense for riders planning self-supported travel on dirt roads and remote routes. The tall seat is a genuine consideration, and its wind protection and long-haul polish are not on the same level as the larger touring machines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: dirt roads, backcountry travel, and a relatively straightforward motorcycle matter more than a luxury electronics package.

Look elsewhere if: two-up highway touring, maximum wind protection, a low seat, or extensive standard touring equipment is the priority.

6. Ducati DesertX: best performance-oriented 21-inch adventure bike

The Ducati DesertX is for riders who want a serious off-road wheel configuration without giving up Ducati’s performance-oriented identity and styling. Ducati positions it for challenging off-road terrain as well as asphalt travel, and its 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels make its intent clearer than that of a typical road-biased adventure motorcycle.

Ducati’s U.S. technical information lists a 5.54-gallon tank. The current standard DesertX model listing identifies approximately 110 hp and a 463-pound wet weight excluding fuel. That weight qualification matters: it should not be compared directly with motorcycles whose published figures include fuel or use a different curb-weight standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DesertX makes the most sense for a rider who will notice and enjoy strong road performance, distinctive design, and an aggressive chassis on unpaved terrain. It is not the rational choice solely because it carries more equipment per dollar. Premium pricing and higher running-cost expectations make ownership economics less forgiving than with Japanese alternatives.

Choose it if: performance, design, and a serious 21/18-inch chassis are equally important.

Look elsewhere if: minimizing purchase price, service cost, or ownership complexity is the main goal.

7. BMW F 900 GS: best lighter European alternative

The BMW F 900 GS fills the gap between the heavyweight R 1300 GS and smaller middleweights. It gives BMW buyers a more manageable option for frequent off-pavement riding while retaining a premium equipment list and enough engine performance for highway travel.

BMW lists an 895cc twin producing 105 hp, a 482-pound ready-to-ride weight, and a 3.8-gallon fuel tank. The standard seat height is 34.2 inches, with lower configurations available. Equipment includes ABS Pro, traction control, heated grips, an engine guard, and an available Enduro package Pro.

Compared with the R 1300 GS, the F 900 GS’s lower weight makes it the more logical BMW for riders who expect to pick their motorcycle up, maneuver it through tighter terrain, or spend more time away from pavement. The smaller tank is the major touring compromise, especially when the bike is loaded or used for long stretches between fuel stops.

Choose it if: you want BMW electronics and finish in a lighter package with a more credible off-road bias.

Look elsewhere if: maximum two-up highway reserve, long fuel range, or the smoothest heavyweight touring experience matters most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Aprilia Tuareg 660: best lightweight chassis and suspension balance

The Aprilia Tuareg 660 is one of the strongest options for riders who want a genuinely light, fully equipped 50/50 adventure motorcycle. It avoids the mass of the heavyweight machines while retaining a parallel-twin engine and long-travel suspension rather than compromising toward a basic single-cylinder format.

Aprilia lists 80 hp from its 659cc twin, a 449-pound wet weight, and a 4.7-gallon tank. Both the front and rear suspension offer 240mm of travel. The equipment package includes four riding modes, cruise control, traction control, and selectable ABS intervention.

The Tuareg’s combination of low weight and suspension travel makes it appealing to riders who prioritize control on rough surfaces but still need to cover highway distances. It is also more electronically complete than the phrase lightweight might suggest. The principal ownership caveat is regional: in some U.S. areas, Aprilia’s dealer and service footprint is smaller than Honda’s, Yamaha’s, or Suzuki’s. That should be checked before committing to remote travel or long-term ownership.

Choose it if: low mass, long suspension travel, and a full feature set are more important than brand-dealer reach.

Look elsewhere if: you live far from Aprilia support or want the broadest established service network.

9. Suzuki V-Strom 800DE: best practical mid-price choice

The 2025 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is the most dirt-capable V-Strom, and it offers a compelling feature-to-price balance. Suzuki lists a U.S. base MSRP of $11,709 for the 2025 model, before applicable destination, freight, setup, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and optional equipment.

The motorcycle uses a 776cc parallel twin, 21/17-inch wheels, 220mm of front and rear suspension travel, and a 5.3-gallon tank. Its electronics include a Gravel traction-control mode and switchable rear ABS for off-road use. Suzuki lists a 507-pound curb weight.

The V-Strom 800DE is practical rather than extreme. Its fuel capacity supports touring, its electronics are useful on loose surfaces, and its price positioning makes it easier to justify than several premium European alternatives. However, it is heavy compared with the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and Aprilia Tuareg 660. Its tube-type wheels also require more involved roadside puncture repair than a tubeless setup, particularly for riders traveling alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you want a feature-rich, usable middleweight with good fuel capacity and a comparatively approachable U.S. MSRP.

Look elsewhere if: minimum weight or easy tubeless puncture repair is more important than price and touring practicality.

10. Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special: best high-power American alternative

The Pan America 1250 Special is the outlier in this ranking. It delivers more power and electronic sophistication than most adventure motorcycles, while offering a distinctive American alternative to the established European and Japanese choices.

Harley-Davidson lists 150 hp and 95 lb-ft of torque, a 5.6-gallon tank, and a 569-pound running-order weight. The Special includes semi-active suspension, nine ride modes, a 6.8-inch TFT display, cornering rider-safety systems, and Adaptive Ride Height. Its 2025 U.S. MSRP is listed as $19,999, before additional purchase costs and options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pan America is at its best when road performance, highway acceleration, electronic features, and long-distance character matter more than technical trail agility. Adaptive Ride Height can be useful for riders concerned about reach to the ground, but the motorcycle remains the heaviest machine in this group. That mass is noticeable when the surface becomes narrow, loose, or difficult.

Choose it if: you want abundant power, sophisticated electronics, and a motorcycle with a distinct American identity.

Look elsewhere if: technical off-road riding is central to the mission or reducing weight is the top priority.

How to choose among the 10

For mostly paved touring and two-up travel

Start with the BMW R 1300 GS, Honda Africa Twin, Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, or Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special. The BMW is the most complete premium all-rounder. The Africa Twin is especially attractive if DCT is desirable. The Tiger offers a refined middleweight alternative, while the Pan America emphasizes power and American character.

For difficult off-road riding

Look first at the KTM 890 Adventure R, Yamaha Ténéré 700, Aprilia Tuareg 660, Ducati DesertX, and BMW F 900 GS. The KTM is the most purpose-built for aggressive terrain. The Ténéré 700 favors simplicity and value. The Tuareg offers an unusually strong weight-and-suspension combination, while the DesertX and F 900 GS bring more premium performance and equipment.

For one motorcycle that must do nearly everything

The BMW R 1300 GS is the safest broad recommendation if the budget allows it. The Honda Africa Twin is the more flexible alternative for buyers who want manual or DCT transmission choices. The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is a strong middleweight compromise for riders who want road refinement without moving all the way to a heavyweight flagship.

For the simplest dirt-oriented approach

The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is the clearest fit in this list. That does not mean it lacks modern equipment—the 2025 model adds YCC-T electronic throttle control—but its overall layout remains more direct and dirt-focused than the premium touring machines. The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is worth considering when fuel capacity, standard electronics, and a lower starting price carry more weight than minimum mass.

For riders concerned about reach and low-speed control

Do not choose by advertised seat height alone. Seat width, suspension sag, rider inseam, luggage load, and the ability to place one foot securely on uneven ground all matter. The Ténéré 700’s 34.4-inch seat and the tall KTM 890 Adventure R deserve particular attention. The BMW F 900 GS offers lower seat configurations, and the Pan America’s Adaptive Ride Height is intended to address reach-to-ground concerns, but neither eliminates the importance of practicing low-speed control on a large motorcycle.

Wheel size, suspension, and weight matter more than a horsepower ranking

A 21-inch front wheel generally gives a dirt-oriented adventure motorcycle more ability to roll over obstacles and track through rougher terrain. A 19-inch front wheel, such as the BMW R 1300 GS uses, usually supports quicker road response and touring stability. Neither wheel size independently determines whether a motorcycle is good or bad off road.

Suspension travel tells only part of the story. Long travel can improve control over rough surfaces, but it often raises the seat and can make low-speed stops more difficult. A motorcycle’s steering geometry, damping, ground clearance, tires, rider skill, and loaded weight are equally important.

Weight is similarly difficult to compare. This list includes ready-to-ride, wet, curb, and running-order figures from different manufacturers. Fuel levels, fluids, standard equipment, and measurement methods may differ. A 449-pound wet motorcycle and a 482-pound ready-to-ride motorcycle may not be separated by a true 33 pounds under identical conditions.

Adventure-riding equipment to budget for

Build the motorcycle around the trip, not just the showroom specification. A realistic adventure setup may need a motorcycle phone mount, motorcycle GPS navigation, waterproof motorcycle luggage, a motorcycle tire repair kit, a portable motorcycle tire inflator, hand protection, and model-specific crash protection. Check the exact motorcycle model year, trim, wheel configuration, luggage mounts, electrical capacity, and clearance before buying any accessory. A part that fits a standard Africa Twin may not fit an Adventure Sports ES, and equipment for one generation of Ténéré 700, GS, or V-Strom may not transfer to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For trips involving rocks or deep ruts, protection such as crash bars and a skid plate can be more consequential than cosmetic accessories. For highway-heavy travel, luggage mounting, weather protection, passenger comfort, and tire choice may matter more. Carrying repair equipment does not make a motorcycle invulnerable; learn how to use it before leaving cell coverage.

Planning a multi-day U.S. backcountry ride

Backcountry Discovery Routes provides free GPS tracks and planning resources for adventure motorcyclists and sells waterproof printed route maps. Official Backcountry Discovery Route maps can be useful as a physical backup when a phone battery, signal, or navigation device becomes unavailable. A route’s existence does not mean every motorcycle on this list is suitable for every section: check current closures, weather, fuel spacing, skill requirements, seasonal access, and the motorcycle’s loaded range before departure.

On a large adventure motorcycle, route planning should include realistic turnaround points. A rider may be able to reach a remote section but lack the energy, fuel, tire setup, or recovery equipment to return safely after conditions deteriorate.

Buying checklist

  1. Define the surface split. Estimate paved touring, maintained gravel, rough two-track, and technical trail mileage separately.
  2. Account for passenger and luggage weight. A motorcycle that feels manageable unloaded can become substantially more demanding with a passenger, panniers, tools, and extra fuel.
  3. Compare the right weight figures. Confirm whether each published number is wet, curb, running order, or ready to ride.
  4. Check seat and standing ergonomics. Verify reach to the ground, handlebar position, peg position, and comfort while standing on the pegs.
  5. Choose wheel and tire priorities. Tubeless wheels simplify many puncture repairs; tube-type wheels can be more vulnerable to roadside inconvenience but remain serviceable with the right tools and skills.
  6. Price the complete motorcycle. Include protection, luggage, tires, navigation, maintenance, freight, setup, taxes, registration, and dealer fees.
  7. Confirm local support. Check dealer inventory, service capability, warranty terms, parts availability, and recalls for the exact model and trim.
  8. Test the actual version. Transmission, suspension, seat, luggage, and fuel-load differences can change the motorcycle’s behavior considerably.

Important 2025 buying caveats

Model-year naming does not guarantee identical equipment worldwide. A trim sold in the United States may not be offered in another market, and a motorcycle described as a 2025 model may remain in dealer inventory after newer model years arrive. Confirm the exact VIN-level equipment, warranty coverage, recall status, and final out-the-door price with a dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Published MSRP is also not a universal final price. Manufacturer figures may exclude some combination of destination, freight, setup, taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, or tariffs. The Suzuki and Harley-Davidson prices quoted above are the U.S. base MSRPs identified for their 2025 models; they should not be treated as direct comparisons with unlisted prices for the other motorcycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMW R 1300 GS actually the best off-road adventure motorcycle?

Not for every kind of off-road riding. It is the best overall recommendation for a rider combining paved touring, gravel, and moderate off-road travel. The KTM 890 Adventure R, Yamaha Ténéré 700, Aprilia Tuareg 660, and other lighter 21-inch-front motorcycles are better starting points for frequent technical trails.

Which 2025 adventure motorcycle has a DCT transmission?

The Honda Africa Twin range includes both conventional-manual and dual-clutch transmission versions. Availability and the exact equipment differences depend on the trim and market, so confirm the specific 2025 version with a Honda dealer.

Is the Yamaha Ténéré 700 easier to ride than the larger motorcycles?

Its 459-pound wet weight is lower than the published weights of the heavyweight machines here, which can make it easier to manage off pavement. However, its 34.4-inch seat is tall, and lower weight does not automatically make a motorcycle easy for every rider. Fit, experience, tires, luggage, and terrain remain important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can these motorcycles be compared directly by weight?

Only cautiously. The manufacturers use different terms and measurement assumptions, including wet, curb, running-order, and ready-to-ride weight. Fuel, fluids, and standard equipment may differ. Treat the figures as broad indicators rather than a controlled test.

Are these still the newest adventure motorcycles available?

They are 2025 model-year motorcycles. Because model years and sales timing vary by market, they should not automatically be described as the newest motorcycles sold in 2026 or later. Check current manufacturer listings and dealer inventory before buying.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the BMW R 1300 GS for premium all-road touring, the Honda Africa Twin for broad versatility and DCT availability, the KTM 890 Adventure R for difficult off-road riding, and the Yamaha Ténéré 700 for a simpler dirt-oriented platform. The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro is the polished middleweight compromise; the Aprilia Tuareg 660 and BMW F 900 GS are the strongest lighter European alternatives; the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is the practical value pick. The Ducati DesertX and Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special make the most sense when performance, character, or brand identity outweighs straightforward ownership economics.
