If you’re shopping for a new 2026 hybrid similar to the Toyota Prius, start with the kind of vehicle you want as much as the fuel-economy figure. Compact sedans such as the Corolla Hybrid and Elantra Hybrid keep the format familiar; the Civic Hybrid hatchback adds liftback access; and crossovers such as the Kia Niro Hybrid trade the Prius’s shape for a taller body. The Prius itself is rated up to 57 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form, so compare each alternative’s exact trim and drivetrain rather than treating these options as a ranked list.
What the 2026 Prius sets as a benchmark
Toyota says the 2026 Prius uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with its fifth-generation hybrid system. Manufacturer figures are 194 net combined horsepower for front-wheel drive (FWD) and up to 196 horsepower for all-wheel drive (AWD); fuel economy is rated up to 57 mpg combined for FWD and 54 mpg combined for AWD. Trim and drivetrain affect the figures. Toyota also lists up to 23.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity and available electronic on-demand AWD. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative-test results. Toyota’s 2026 Prius specifications and feature details provide the model-year baseline.
The Prius model page listed a $28,550 starting MSRP for 2026. Treat that as a published starting price, not a dealer quote; destination, taxes, registration, dealer add-ons and local pricing can change what you pay.

The figures below are published specifications for selected 2026 trims or lineup entries. They are not a like-for-like test: body styles, trims, available details and price bases vary. Check the specific vehicle’s current manufacturer listing and the fees included in its price before comparing offers.

Choose the body style before comparing cargo
The Prius and Civic Hybrid hatchback offer hatch access. The Civic sedan, Corolla Hybrid, Elantra Hybrid, Camry, Sonata and Accord are sedans; the Niro, Corolla Cross and Sportage are crossover-shaped. Cargo figures on equivalent terms are not established here, so check the exact models’ published cargo measurements and bring the items you need to carry when you shop.
Compare the same kind of fuel-economy figure
A combined mpg rating is not interchangeable with a city or highway figure. The Prius’s stated maximum is for FWD; AWD has a different published maximum. The Elantra Blue and Civic hatchback figures above are combined ratings, while the cited Corolla Hybrid and Camry pages provide city and highway figures but no combined rating in the captured listing. Use the EPA rating for the exact trim and drivetrain you are considering, and don’t treat a published estimate as a promise of real-world mileage.

Starting MSRPs do not necessarily include destination, taxes, registration, options or dealer charges. Honda’s Civic hatchback announcement explicitly excludes destination from the listed MSRP, and Honda’s Accord release says its MSRP excludes destination, tax, license, registration, options and color upgrades. Ask each dealer for an itemized out-the-door quote for the same model year and comparable equipment.
Check AWD and power on the exact trim
The Prius offers AWD and up to 196 net combined horsepower on AWD grades. Toyota lists AWD as available for the Corolla Hybrid. The cited figures do not establish AWD availability across every other model here, so verify it directly for the trim you want rather than assuming a model-wide feature.
What these figures can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer specifications and published lineup figures help build a shortlist, but they do not establish which car will cost least to own in your circumstances. Comparative reliability, repair costs, depreciation, insurance and local transaction prices across these ten vehicles are not established by the cited material. For a purchase decision, compare the exact trim, equipment, drivetrain, current fees and local dealer quote.
