10 Affordable Used Sports Cars with Low Running Costs

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the best default pick among affordable used sports cars with low running costs, while the BRZ, 86/GR86, Civic Si, GTI, Mustang EcoBoost, Fiat 124, Veloster Turbo, FR-S, and MR2 Spyder suit different priorities.

The best affordable used sports cars with low running costs are the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86/GR86, Honda Civic Si, Ford Mustang EcoBoost, Volkswagen GTI, Fiat 124 Spider, Hyundai Veloster Turbo, Scion FR-S, and Toyota MR2 Spyder. The Miata is the default pick because RepairPal lists $429 average annual repair cost on its current 2026 page.

The shortlist spans traditional two-seat roadsters, rear-wheel-drive coupes, practical sport compacts, and hot hatches. The right choice depends on whether low repair exposure, passenger space, cargo capacity, power, a fixed roof, or an inexpensive purchase price matters most.

Key takeaways

  • The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the default low-running-cost choice: RepairPal’s current 2026 page reports $429 in average annual repair costs, 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year, and a 10% probability of a severe repair.
  • The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86/GR86 provide a fixed-roof alternative, but RepairPal reports $672 in average annual BRZ repair costs and $755 in average annual maintenance costs for a 2017 Toyota 86.
  • The Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen GTI are the strongest daily-driver choices because both add practical passenger or cargo space; Car and Driver lists 31 mpg combined for the 2026 Civic Si.
  • The Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the larger, more powerful choice, not the cheapest to own; RepairPal reports $709 in average annual repair costs for the 2024 Mustang.
  • A low purchase price does not guarantee low running costs: service history, accident damage, modifications, tires, insurance, rust, and a professional inspection can matter more than the badge.

What counts as an affordable used sports car with low running costs?

Affordable means more than a low listing price. A cheap sports car can become expensive if it needs tires, a clutch, cooling-system work, suspension repairs, convertible-top repairs, or overdue maintenance immediately after purchase. Because used prices vary by model year, mileage, condition, geography, and season, this list does not assign unsupported dollar price bands. Instead, it ranks cars by the combination of sports-car character, practical usability, repair exposure, and the likelihood that a careful buyer can find a sensible example.

RepairPal’s figures are useful comparisons, but they are averages rather than promises for a particular car. Car and Driver says its used-sports-car rankings use roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment. That broader framework is useful because running costs alone cannot tell you whether a two-seat roadster or a four-door hatchback fits your life.

Which used sports cars offer the best balance of price and running costs?

Car Body and capacity Best use Available cost signal Most important inspection risk
Mazda MX-5 Miata Rear-wheel-drive, two-seat roadster Pure sports-car driving with minimal size and weight $429 average annual repair cost; 0.3 unscheduled visits; 10% severe-repair probability Rust, accident damage, roof condition, water intrusion, and track modifications
Subaru BRZ Fixed-roof, four-seat coupe with folding rear seats Rear-wheel-drive handling with occasional rear-seat or cargo flexibility $672 average annual repair cost Drifting or track use, clutch, tires, wheels, underbody, and oil leaks

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata: the best overall low-cost sports-car bet

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the best default recommendation for a buyer who wants a genuine sports car and relatively conservative ownership exposure. Car and Driver describes the Miata as a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive, two-passenger sports car and identifies used 2016-and-newer ND-generation examples as an especially attractive used-market target.

According to RepairPal’s current 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliability page, the Miata has an average annual repair cost of $429. RepairPal also reports an average of 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year and a 10% probability of a severe repair. Those figures make the Miata the clearest answer to the question, “What is the cheapest sports car to maintain?” They remain averages, not a guarantee that an old or neglected example will be inexpensive.

The Miata’s low weight, modest power, large enthusiast community, and broad service ecosystem help explain why the car can deliver sports-car involvement without requiring a high-power drivetrain. The trade-off is severe practicality: the Miata has only two seats and limited luggage space. Inspect the convertible roof, drains, seals, underbody, sills, accident repairs, rust, and evidence of track use or aftermarket modifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Subaru BRZ: the best fixed-roof alternative

The Subaru BRZ is the strongest choice for buyers who want rear-wheel-drive handling and a fixed roof while retaining occasional rear-seat and cargo flexibility. Car and Driver describes the BRZ as an affordable manual-transmission sports coupe and notes that its four-seat body and folding rear seats make it more practical than the Miata.

According to RepairPal’s current 2026 Subaru BRZ cost page, average annual repair cost is $672. The BRZ therefore should not be presented as automatically cheaper to own than a Miata simply because it is a Toyota 86/GR86-family coupe. Check the clutch, tires, wheels, underbody, oil leaks, suspension, and signs of drifting or track use. Verify open recalls by VIN before completing the purchase.

3. Toyota 86 and GR86: the best Toyota-badged twin

The Toyota 86 and GR86 are the right alternatives for shoppers who prefer Toyota dealer access, Toyota styling, or the Toyota badge but want the same basic rear-drive coupe concept as the BRZ. The Toyota 86 is the predecessor name for the GR86; IIHS identifies the BRZ and GR86 as redesigned for 2022 after a one-year absence from the market.

According to RepairPal’s current 2026 page for the 2017 Toyota 86, average annual maintenance cost is $755. The year-specific figure is not a direct forecast for every 86 or GR86, but it is an important warning against assuming that a lower used purchase price automatically means lower total ownership cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the Toyota 86 or GR86 for suspension and engine modifications, uneven or mismatched tire wear, accident repairs, clutch wear, and documented oil changes. A clean, unmodified car with consistent records is preferable to a cheaper example built for drifting or track use.

4. Honda Civic Si: the best practical sport compact

The Honda Civic Si is the best choice when a buyer needs four doors, usable rear seats, and everyday practicality but still wants a manual performance compact. Car and Driver says few sport compacts match the Civic Si’s blend of performance, practicality, and affordability, and lists 31 mpg combined for the 2026 Civic Si.

That 31 mpg combined figure belongs to the 2026 model and should not be applied indiscriminately to every used Civic Si. For older cars, check the exact model year and transmission rather than relying on a generic model-wide economy claim.

Insurance-loss data adds useful context. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute’s 2022 report covering 2017–19 vehicles, the Civic Si has a relative overall collision-loss index of 124, compared with 83 for the Miata convertible. The index is not an individual insurance quote, so obtain a quote using the specific VIN and driver profile. Inspect the Civic Si for aggressive driving, engine or suspension modifications, clutch wear, wheel damage, and worn tires.

5. Ford Mustang EcoBoost: the best higher-power value

The Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the larger, more powerful option for shoppers who want more cabin space and the choice of a coupe or convertible. The EcoBoost is better understood as a grand-touring performance car than as a minimalist sports car, so fuel, tires, insurance, and repairs may cost more than they do on a Miata or BRZ.

According to RepairPal’s current 2026 page for the 2024 Ford Mustang, average annual repair cost is $709. RepairPal also reports an above-average reliability rating for the model, while noting that recall counts can be substantial for some model years. The 2024 figure is a model-year reference rather than a promise about an older used EcoBoost.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase

Before buying, verify recall completion, inspect the rear tires for abuse, review the accident history, and price insurance. A Mustang that looks inexpensive beside a Miata may still produce a higher ownership bill because of its size, power, tire requirements, and insurance profile.

6. Volkswagen GTI: the best all-rounder if a hot hatch qualifies

The Volkswagen GTI belongs on this list as a practical performance hatchback rather than a traditional two-seat sports car. The GTI makes sense for a reader who wants sports-car pace and handling with hatchback cargo space and everyday usability.

The main cost-control requirement is documentation. Budget for tires, brakes, cooling-system work, and any overdue scheduled maintenance, and do not treat a cheap GTI with missing records as a bargain. Have the car scanned and inspected before purchase, and compare the cost of local specialist service if Volkswagen expertise is limited in your area.

7. Fiat 124 Spider: the best uncommon roadster alternative

The Fiat 124 Spider is a sensible roadster alternative for a shopper who prefers its styling and turbocharged character to the Miata’s presentation. The Fiat is not automatically cheaper to maintain than the Mazda, and local parts and service support can matter greatly.

According to the HLDI’s 2022 collision-loss report for 2017–19 vehicles, the Fiat 124 convertible has a relative overall collision-loss index of 86, close to the Miata convertible’s index of 83. That comparison describes collision losses in the report, not guaranteed repair costs or an individual insurance premium.

Inspect the turbocharged powertrain carefully, check for water intrusion and roof problems, verify nearby parts and service availability, and obtain an insurance quote before committing.

8. Hyundai Veloster Turbo: the best inexpensive practical fun

The Hyundai Veloster Turbo is a useful choice for buyers who want a distinctive hatchback body and cargo space at a potentially low used purchase price. The Veloster is more practical than a roadster, but it belongs below the Miata and Civic Si when predictable long-term ownership is the primary goal.

Inspect the turbocharger, maintenance records, tires, clutch or automatic-transmission behavior, and availability of local specialist support. A low price cannot compensate for poor records or expensive powertrain work.

9. Scion FR-S: the best early-generation 86 bargain

The Scion FR-S is the bargain route into the early Toyota/Subaru rear-wheel-drive coupe formula. The FR-S is mechanically related to the early Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ family, so the same inspection logic applies.

Age and abuse matter more than the badge. Examine the FR-S for drifting or track use, crash repairs, uneven tire wear, clutch wear, suspension changes, engine modifications, and cosmetic work that could hide structural damage. A clean, unmodified car with maintenance documentation is worth choosing over a cheaper modified example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Toyota MR2 Spyder: the best lightweight older classic

The Toyota MR2 Spyder suits an experienced buyer who wants a very light, two-seat convertible and accepts age-related maintenance risk. The MR2 Spyder can be inexpensive to buy and rewarding to drive, but its ownership cost depends heavily on condition, rust, prior repairs, and parts availability.

Inspect the underbody, cooling system, oil consumption, clutch, soft top, suspension, and structural repairs. The MR2 Spyder is a condition-dependent recommendation, not a claim that every example has low running costs. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important because age can create problems that model-level reliability averages do not capture.

Is a Miata cheaper to own than a BRZ or Toyota 86?

Based on the supplied RepairPal figures, the Miata has the strongest reported repair-cost position, but the comparison is not perfectly apples-to-apples because the pages cover different model references.

Model reference RepairPal figure How to interpret it Important limitation
Mazda MX-5 Miata $429 average annual repair cost Lowest reported repair figure among the directly compared cars Average does not describe a neglected, modified, rusty, or accident-damaged car
Subaru BRZ $672 average annual repair cost Reported average is $243 higher than the Miata figure Model-level average; exact year and condition still matter
Toyota 86, 2017 $755 average annual maintenance cost Reported figure is $326 higher than the Miata repair figure 2017 Toyota 86 figure is not a direct forecast for every GR86
Ford Mustang, 2024 $709 average annual repair cost Useful reference for the larger, more powerful choice 2024 model-year data should not be applied unchanged to older used Mustangs

The practical answer is yes: the Miata is the better default if low repair exposure is the priority. The BRZ and Toyota 86/GR86 become better choices when a fixed roof, rear-seat flexibility, or coupe packaging matters enough to justify potentially higher ownership costs.

How do collision-loss figures affect running costs?

HLDI’s relative overall-loss index measures collision losses compared with an all-vehicle baseline of 100. A lower number can be a useful insurance-risk signal, but the index is not the same as a repair bill, an insurance premium, or a guarantee about a particular driver.

Vehicle HLDI relative overall collision-loss index Report coverage What the comparison suggests
Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible 83 2017–19 vehicles; HLDI report published 2022 Below the all-vehicle baseline
Fiat 124 convertible 86 2017–19 vehicles; HLDI report published 2022 Close to the Miata result
Honda Civic Si 124 2017–19 vehicles; HLDI report published 2022 Above the all-vehicle baseline
Hyundai Veloster Turbo 128 2019 vehicle; HLDI report published 2022 Above the all-vehicle baseline
Subaru BRZ 145 2017–19 vehicles; HLDI report published 2022 Higher collision-loss signal than the Miata
Toyota 86 178 2017–19 vehicles; HLDI report published 2022 Highest listed collision-loss signal in this comparison

According to HLDI’s 2022 report covering 2017–19 vehicles, the Miata convertible’s index was 83 and the Toyota 86’s was 178, while the all-vehicle comparison baseline was 100. Because insurance companies use individual driver, location, coverage, vehicle, and claims information, request an actual quote before negotiating on any used sports car.

How should you inspect a used sports car before buying it?

The inspection should determine whether the apparently affordable car is actually a documented, mechanically sound car. Use the following sequence before paying a deposit.

  1. Check the 17-character VIN for recalls. NHTSA says, “If you are a vehicle owner, search for recalls by your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).” Use the NHTSA recall lookup to check the exact vehicle. A clean recall result does not prove that the engine, transmission, structure, or maintenance is sound.
  2. Request service and ownership records. Look for regular oil changes, clutch or transmission work, cooling-system repairs, brake and tire replacement, and evidence that scheduled maintenance was completed.
  3. Inspect the body and structure. Check mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, overspray, flood damage, corrosion, rust, underbody damage, and signs of crash repair. Rust is especially important on older Miata, FR-S, and MR2 Spyder examples.
  4. Evaluate the tires and wheels. Check tire age, tread depth, uneven wear, mismatched brands or sizes, bent wheels, and sidewall damage. Uneven wear can reveal alignment, suspension, accident, or track-use problems.
  5. Scan for stored diagnostic trouble codes. Bring an OBD2 scanner or used-car code reader to identify stored diagnostic trouble codes and warning-light history. An OBD2 scanner cannot detect every mechanical, structural, flood, maintenance, or intermittent problem, so it complements rather than replaces a professional inspection.
  6. Pay for a professional pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified technician examine the engine, transmission, clutch, brakes, cooling system, air conditioning, suspension, steering, underbody, and diagnostic data. A professional inspection is more valuable than trying to save the inspection fee on an inexpensive car.
  7. Test the car cold and warm. Watch for difficult starting, smoke, overheating, warning lights, clutch slip, transmission grinding, brake vibration, suspension noise, air-conditioning failure, and abnormal steering behavior during a proper road test.
  8. Inspect every convertible system. On a Miata, Fiat 124, Mustang convertible, or MR2 Spyder, examine the roof, drains, seals, latches, fabric or panels, and interior for water intrusion.
  9. Price insurance before purchase. Collision-loss indexes provide context, but only a quote for the specific driver and vehicle shows the likely premium.
  10. Treat modifications as risk multipliers. Engine, suspension, exhaust, forced-induction, wheel, and track-oriented modifications require professional documentation. Otherwise, choose the unmodified car with the clearer history.

Which car is best for your situation?

Buyer priority Best starting point Reason Main compromise
Lowest reported repair exposure Mazda MX-5 Miata RepairPal reports $429 average annual repair cost on its current 2026 page Two seats and limited luggage space
Fixed roof and occasional rear-seat use Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86/GR86 Rear-drive coupe layout with folding or occasional rear-seat and cargo flexibility Reported cost figures are higher than the Miata comparison figure
Four-door daily driver Honda Civic Si Usable rear seats, sport-compact character, and 31 mpg combined listed for the 2026 model Collision-loss index of 124 for 2017–19 vehicles
Hatchback cargo space Volkswagen GTI Performance-car pace in a practical hatchback body Service records and cooling, brake, and tire condition are critical
More power and cabin space Ford Mustang EcoBoost Larger coupe or convertible with more power than the lightweight choices Fuel, tires, insurance, and repairs may cost more
Unusual convertible choice Fiat 124 Spider Lightweight roadster with distinctive styling and turbocharged character Parts and local service support require verification
Older low-cost project or classic Scion FR-S or Toyota MR2 Spyder Lower purchase-price potential and strong lightweight or rear-drive character Age, abuse, rust, parts availability, and condition dominate ownership cost

For most shoppers, start with a clean Mazda MX-5 Miata, then move to the BRZ or Toyota 86/GR86 if you need a fixed roof. Choose the Civic Si or GTI when daily practicality is non-negotiable, and choose the Mustang EcoBoost when extra space and power matter more than the lowest possible running costs.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the strongest default choice when low repair exposure is the priority. RepairPal’s current 2026 page reports $429 in average annual repair costs for the Miata, compared with $672 for the Subaru BRZ; however, a neglected or modified Miata can cost more than a well-maintained BRZ.

What is the best cheap sports car for daily driving?

The Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen GTI are the best daily-driver choices in this list because they provide practical passenger or cargo space while retaining performance-car character. The Civic Si is a four-door sport compact, while the GTI is a hatchback.

Are used BRZs and GR86s reliable?

Used BRZs and GR86s can be reliable when they have complete service records and have not been abused, drifted, tracked, or heavily modified. RepairPal reports $672 in average annual BRZ repair costs and $755 in average annual maintenance costs for a 2017 Toyota 86, so neither coupe should automatically be assumed to cost less than a Miata.

Does a clean recall search mean a used sports car is reliable?

A clean NHTSA recall search does not prove that a used sports car is mechanically sound. NHTSA recommends searching by the vehicle’s 17-character VIN to identify applicable safety recalls, but buyers still need service records, a diagnostic scan, and a professional pre-purchase inspection.

The Bottom Line

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the safest default answer for an affordable used sports car with low running costs, with RepairPal reporting $429 in average annual repair costs on its current 2026 page. A well-documented BRZ, 86/GR86, Civic Si, GTI, Mustang EcoBoost, Fiat 124, Veloster Turbo, FR-S, or MR2 Spyder can also work, but condition, modifications, inspection results, and insurance quotes should decide the individual purchase.
